Nude carps, a genotype of common carp which are devoid of scales, have been banned from farmed populations of carp in Europe due to both the lethal effect of the N (nude) gene when in homozygous state, and to the negative pleiotropic effects on growth and survival (especially in harsh conditions) of this same gene in the heterozygous state, which produces the nude phenotype. In Madagascar, where climatic variations are less extreme than in Eastern Europe, the nude phenotype is valued both by farmers and consumers, for its good growth and supposed low number of intermuscular bones. We performed an on-farm experiment using a “common garden” design to control environmental variation, in order to compare the growth and survival, as well as the number of... |

During surveys of dying vegetation in natural ecosystems and associated waterways in Australia many new taxa have been identified from Phytophthora ITS Clade 6. For representative isolates, the region spanning the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA, the nuclear gene encoding heat shock protein 90 and the mitochondrial cox1 gene were PCR amplified and sequenced. Based on phylogenetic analysis and morphological and physiological comparison, four species and one informally designated taxon have been described; Phytophthora gibbosa, P. gregata, P. litoralis, P. thermophila and P. taxon paludosa. Phytophthora gibbosa, P. gregata and P. taxon paludosa form a new cluster and share a common ancestor; they are homothallic and generally... |

One important step for the colonization of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) is to determine the optimal conditions for larval rearing, which makes possible the development of experiments comprising larval rearing in the laboratory. In this research the effect of diet composition on the development of O.albifasciatus was studied. For this purpose, cohorts of 20 first instars were reared using five diets: 1:1 mix of yeast and TetraMin®, 1:1 mix of fine and coarse organic matter, grass cuts soaked in water for 1h or 24h before larvae incorporation, and 1:1:1 mix of grass cuts, fine organic matter and coarse organic matter. Survival was recorded for each cohort, while development time from first instar to pupa, and adult wing length were recorded for each... |

The present study was carried out in samples of Ostrea columbiensis (Hanley) taken from the estero ”Las Alforjas”, during de period between march-december of 1989. Three stations were selected in the estero, in order to observe the fixation, growth and survival of the larvae in special collectors designed by the authors. The percentage of fixation in the station 1 was 25,8%, in the station 2, 37,8% and in the station 3, 36,4%. The larvae oyster got fixed, preferably, by the external face of the collector (big valve) in a percentage of 64,3, while on the external face this percentage was 35,7%. The average height of the oysters during the whole period of study was 52 mm, with a monthly increment of 5,2 mm. The percentage of the oysters survival was 84,4%.... |

Sparus aurata females in captivity were injected with human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (HCG), pituitary extraction and both them during the spawning season. First hormonal treatment was applied as cumulative doses required for successful ovulation ranged from 4500 to 7500 IU\fish, the maximum fertilization percent was 71. The ovulation period under the influence of this treatment extended up to 14 days. In the second experiment, the total dose requirement for successful ovulation ranged from 2 to 4 pituitary extractions. Fish and the maximum fertilization percent recorded was 81, while the longest ovulation period obtained was 15 days. In the third experiment the total doses required for successful ovulation ranged from 2 pituitary extractions and 4500... |

The effect of thinning on the harvestable biomass of mussel Mytilus platensis (d'Orb.) cultures was analyzed. Mussels were grown on ropes in sub-surface long-lines in Golfo Nuevo (Chubut, Argentina, 64° 59' W; 42°46' S) during a 15 month period (January 1987-April 1988). Ropes were seeded using the Spanish method with 2,000 individuals per rope meter. The thinning-out was performed three months later using the following thinning ratios (TR: number of half-grown ropes obtained from one seed rope):1,6 (900 individuals m super(-1)), 2,4 (600 individuals m super(-1)) and 3,2 (450 individuals m super(-1)). Growth rate (shell length and meat weight), survival and number of harvestable ropes increase with the thinning rate; the harvestable biomass being larger at... |
