Response to divergent selection for resistance to summer mortality in Pacific oyster spat : genetic parameters and correlated responses with subsequent survival and growth ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Bedier, Edouard; Ernande, Bruno; Degremont, Lionel.
The multidisciplinary program "MOREST" aims to improve our understanding of causes of summer mortality in Crassostrea gigas juveniles in France and to reduce its impact on oyster production. As part of this program, four successive generations of families were bred between 2001 and 2005 in our research hatchery in La Tremblade. Survival and growth were recorded in the field in three sites along the French coast (Ronce, Rivière d'Auray and Baie des Veys). The first generation (44 full-sib families nested within 17 half-sib families) was tested during summer 2001 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for spat survival. An important genetic basis was found (estimated narrow-sense heritability among sites = 0.83 ± 0.40). In contrast, lower...

Comparison of rearing performances and intermuscular bone number in the mirror and nude genotypes of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in a controlled field test in Madagascar ArchiMer
Andria-mananjara, Diana Edithe; Rasamoelina, Harena; Vandeputte, Marc.
Nude carps, a genotype of common carp which are devoid of scales, have been banned from farmed populations of carp in Europe due to both the lethal effect of the N (nude) gene when in homozygous state, and to the negative pleiotropic effects on growth and survival (especially in harsh conditions) of this same gene in the heterozygous state, which produces the nude phenotype. In Madagascar, where climatic variations are less extreme than in Eastern Europe, the nude phenotype is valued both by farmers and consumers, for its good growth and supposed low number of intermuscular bones. We performed an on-farm experiment using a “common garden” design to control environmental variation, in order to compare the growth and survival, as well as the number of...

Demographic response of a population of white-chinned petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis to climate and longline fishery bycatch ArchiMer
Barbraud, Christophe; Marteau, Cedric; Ridoux, Vincent; Delord, Karine; Weimerskirch, Henri.
1. Fisheries can affect non-target species through bycatch, and climate change may act simultaneously on their population dynamics. Estimating the relative impact of fisheries and climate on non-target species remains a challenge for many populations because the spatio-temporal distribution of individuals remains poorly known and available demographic information is incomplete.
2. We used population survey data, capture-mark-recapture methods, population modelling and the demographic invariant method to investigate the effects of climate and fisheries on the demography of a predator species affected by bycatch. These complementary approaches were used to help account for different sources of uncertainty.
3. The white-chinned petrel...

Survival and reproductive potential of different cohorts of Calomys venustus Mastozool. neotrop.
Gomez,María D.; Provensal,María C.; Polop,Jaime J..
In order to determine winter survival and reproductive potential in cohort 2 (C2) and cohort 3 (C3) of Calomys venustus we compared these parameters between individuals of these cohorts and their offspring. Forty six males (13 C2 and 33 C3) and 29 females (21 C2 and 8 C3) were observed from June to September to determine winter survival. There were no significant differences in male and female survival between cohorts. Twenty three male-female pairs of C2 and 14 of C3 were placed in different shelters from October to January to determine the reproductive potential, which was measured as litter size, number of litters, post-partum pregnacies utilization, offspring survival and growth at weaning. There were not any significant differences in the considered...

Multiple new Phytophthora species from ITS Clade 6 associated with natural ecosystems in Australia: evolutionary and ecological implications Naturalis
Jung, T.; Stukely, M.J.C.; Hardy, G.E.St.J.; White, D.; Paap, T.; Dunstan, W.A.; Burgess, T.I..
During surveys of dying vegetation in natural ecosystems and associated waterways in Australia many new taxa have been identified from Phytophthora ITS Clade 6. For representative isolates, the region spanning the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA, the nuclear gene encoding heat shock protein 90 and the mitochondrial cox1 gene were PCR amplified and sequenced. Based on phylogenetic analysis and morphological and physiological comparison, four species and one informally designated taxon have been described; Phytophthora gibbosa, P. gregata, P. litoralis, P. thermophila and P. taxon paludosa. Phytophthora gibbosa, P. gregata and P. taxon paludosa form a new cluster and share a common ancestor; they are homothallic and generally...

Effects of different protein concentrations on longevity and feeding behavior of two adult populations of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) Neotropical Entomology
Plácido-Silva,Maria do Carmo; Silva Neto,Alberto M. da; Zucoloto,Fernando S.; Joachim-Bravo,Iara S..
The effects of protein intake on two adult male and female populations of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann were assessed. One population consisted of flies reared for twenty years in the laboratory (Lab-pop); the other population consisted both of flies reared in the laboratory for approximately fifteen years and of the periodically introduced wild flies (Hybrid-pop). Three diets were tested: a no-yeast diet and two diets containing yeast (protein source) at the concentrations 6.5 g or 1.5 g per 100 ml diet. The parameters analyzed were: adult longevity, diet intake with and without yeast, and discrimination threshold for yeast. Protein intake increased Lab-pop adult longevity and did not affect longevity of the Hybrid-pop. Longevity in each population was...

Effect of diet composition on the development of the floodwater Mosquito Ochlerotatus (Ochletotatus) albifasciatus (Macquart) (Diptera: Culicidae) Neotropical Entomology
Sy,Victoria E.; Campos,Raúl E..
One important step for the colonization of Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Macquart) is to determine the optimal conditions for larval rearing, which makes possible the development of experiments comprising larval rearing in the laboratory. In this research the effect of diet composition on the development of O.albifasciatus was studied. For this purpose, cohorts of 20 first instars were reared using five diets: 1:1 mix of yeast and TetraMin®, 1:1 mix of fine and coarse organic matter, grass cuts soaked in water for 1h or 24h before larvae incorporation, and 1:1:1 mix of grass cuts, fine organic matter and coarse organic matter. Survival was recorded for each cohort, while development time from first instar to pupa, and adult wing length were recorded for each...

Riaño-Quintero,Camilo; Gómez-Ramírez,Edwin; Hurtado-Giraldo,Hernán.
ABSTRACT In Colombia the use of glyphosate commercial formulations (Roundup™) for spraying have left deleterious effects on animals and humans. Much of this spraying takes place at the Orinoco basin, habitat of one of the most exported ornamental fish in Colombia, Cardinal neon. To evaluate the effect of Roundup Activo™ four experimental treatments were carried out with 0 mg/L (T1), 0.1 mg/L (T2), 1 mg/L (T3) and 5 mg/L (T4) during 30 days of exposure. The fishes were processed for high-resolution optical microscopy. The main finding of Roundup Activo™ exposure was an increase in mast cells number in brain blood vessels and some neuronal nuclei of the preoptic and posterior diencephalic areas, including hypothalamus. A correlation between concentrations...

A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Lasta, C.A.; Guerrero, R.A..
Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each...
