Calonectria species associated with cutting rot of Eucalyptus Naturalis

Decline in the productivity of Eucalyptus hybrid cutting production in the Guangdong Province of China is linked to cutting rot associated with several Calonectria spp. The aim of this study was to identify these fungi using morphological and DNA sequence comparisons. Two previously undescribed Calonectria spp., Ca. pseudoreteaudii sp. nov. and Ca. cerciana sp. nov. were identified together with Ca. pauciramosa. Calonectria pseudoreteaudii resides in the Ca. reteaudii complex and Ca. cerciana is closely related to Ca. morganii. Connected to the discovery of Ca. pseudoreteaudii, species in the Ca. reteaudii complex were re-considered and the group is shown to accommodate two cryptic species. Morphological study and taxonomical notes on Eudendriidae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Athecatae/Anthomedusae) Naturalis

The morphology of 25 species of the family Eudendriidae was studied, with special regard to their reproductive organs, using techniques of SEM and optical microscopy. Whenever possible a re-analysis of the diagnostic characters of these species was carried out. Furthermore, several synonymies were confirmed or discussed and remarks on taxonomical details are presented. A developmental (ontogenetical) series is proposed for the reproductive differentiation, and its usefulness for phylogenetic analysis is considered.

Resolving the Diaporthe species occurring on soybean in Croatia Naturalis

Diaporthe (anamorph = Phomopsis) species are plant pathogens and endophytes on a wide range of hosts including economically important crops. At least four Diaporthe taxa occur on soybean and they are responsible for serious diseases and significant yield losses. Although several studies have extensively described the culture and morphological characters of these pathogens, their taxonomy has not been fully resolved. Diaporthe and Phomopsis isolates were obtained from soybean and other plant hosts throughout Croatia. Eudendrium pocaruquarum n. sp. (Hydrozoa, Eudendriidae) from the southeastern coast of Brazil, with remarks on taxonomic approaches to the family Eudendriidae Naturalis

Eudendrium pocaruquarum, a new species of athecate hydroid referable to the family Eudendriidae, is described from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The species is very similar to the widespread Eudendrium ramosum (Linnaeus, 1758), differing from it in the smaller size of the large microbasic euryteles. Longstanding problems in the systematics of eudendriid hydroids are noted, and the inadequacies of many early descriptions of species are discussed. The nematocysts provide a supplementary character for discrimination of species of Eudendrium, although information on the cnidome appears to have been sometimes misinterpreted in literature.

Dentaliids (Mollusca, Scaphopoda) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis

Scaphopods remain poorly known from the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage in northeast Belgium and the southeast Netherlands. At least three species appear to be represented, but incomplete preservation (i.e., lack of shell material) hampers a detailed systematic treatment of most specimens. In museum collections, the name Dentalium nysti Binkhorst van den Binkhorst, 1861 (= D. binkhorsti Pilsbry & Sharp, 1898; non D. nysti d’Orbigny, 1852) is often used rather indiscriminately for both genuine scaphopods and internal moulds of serpulid worm tubes. Here, we describe and illustrate Antalis? binkhorsti, Fissidentalium? sp. 1 and Dentaliidae sp. indet., all of Maastrichtian age, as well as a late Campanian form, Fissidentalium? sp. 2.

A phylogenetic study of Dothiorella and Spencermartinsia species associated with woody plants in Iran, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain Naturalis

Dothiorella and Spencermartinsia are two botryosphaeriaceous genera with dark 2-celled conidia and found in parasitic, saprophytic or endophytic association with various woody host plants. Based on ITS and EF1-α sequence data and morphology, eight new species are described from Iran, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. Of these, five species are placed in Dothiorella, namely D. iranica, D. parva, D. prunicola, D. sempervirentis and D. striata, and three species belong to Spencermartinsia named as S. citricola, S. mangiferae and S. plurivora. An identification key to the species of each genus is provided.

Comparative tadpole morphology in three species of frogs of the genus Spinomantis (Amphibia: Mantellidae) Naturalis

We describe the tadpoles of three species of Malagasy frogs, classified in the genus Spinomantis, based on specimens identified by DNA barcoding. The tadpole of Spinomantis aglavei is a typical Orton type IV larva. The oral disc is not emarginated laterally, but has two mid-ventral folds and a labial tooth row formula of 3(2- 3)/2(1). The tadpole of S. phantasticus is similar, the oral disc being laterally emarginated and having one medial fold; LTRF is 3/3(1). The fern flora of the world (Pteridophyta) has direct evolutionary links with the earliest vascular plants that appeared in the late Devonian. Knowing the mycobiota associated to this group of plants is critical for a full understanding of the Fungi. Nevertheless, perhaps because of the minor economic significance of ferns, this niche remains relatively neglected by mycologists. The three closely related genera Aleurites J. R. Forst. & G. Forst., Reutealis Airy Shaw and Vernicia Lour., together constituting the subtribe Aleuritinae of the tribe Aleuritideae (Euphorbiaceae subfamily Crotonoideae), are revised. Originally included in Aleurites, Reutealis and Vernicia are considered generically distinct on account of differences in the indumentum, leaf base, inflorescences, number of stamens and fruit type. Pollen and orbicule ontogeny in representatives of three genera of Dioscoreales—Narthecium ossifragum Huds. (Nartheciaceae), Tacca artocarpifolia Seem. and Tacca chantrieri Andre´ (Dioscoreaceae), and Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin (Dioscoreaceae)—is described and illustrated using LM, SEM, and TEM. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum species is a serious disease of more than 30 plant genera. Several Colletotrichum species have been reported to infect chili in different countries. Although China is the largest chiliproducing country, little is known about the species that have been infecting chili locally. Therefore, we collected samples of diseased chili from 29 provinces of China, from which 1285 strains were isolated. Species of Leucadendron, Leucospermum and Protea (Proteaceae) are in high demand for the international floriculture market due to their brightly coloured and textured flowers or bracts. Fungal pathogens, however, create a serious problem in cultivating flawless blooms. The aim of the present study was to characterise several of these pathogens using morphology, culture characteristics, and DNA sequence data of the rRNA-ITS and LSU genes. Trichoderma (Hypocrea) species with green ascospores from China Naturalis

Stromata of Trichoderma species having green ascospores were collected in various regions of China. Based on morphology of the sexual and asexual morph, culture characteristics, and sequence analyses of rpb2 and tef1 genes, 17 species with green ascospores were identified. Among them, Trichoderma rosulatum, T. rufobrunneum and T. stipitatum are described as new species, and seven other species are reported for the first time from China. Benthic shallow-water hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) of the coast of São Sebastião, Brazil, including a checklist of Brazilian hydroids Naturalis

The paper presents the results of a general survey of the hydroid fauna of the coastal region of the São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo State, Brazil. Intensive collecting in the intertidal and infralittoral zones, from 1984 to 1992, led to the discovery of many species, some of which are small and inconspicuous. Out of 59 species of hydroids (17 athecate and 42 thecate) described and illustrated, three are new records for the Atlantic Ocean, six for the western South Atlantic, and 21 for the Brazilian coast. Lower Miocene echinoderms of Jamaica, West Indies Naturalis

Despite being diverse globally, Miocene echinoids are poorly known from Jamaica. Moderately diverse echinoids and other echinoderms have been identified mainly from fragmentary specimens collected from chalks and mass-flow deposits of the Lower Miocene Montpelier Formation, White Limestone Group, near Duncans, parish of Trelawny. This locality has yielded the most diverse association of fossil echinoderms known from the Miocene of Jamaica, including at least ten species in four classes. The present paper constitutes an introduction to taxonomic methodology. After an analysis of taxonomic practice, and a brief survey of kinds of attributes, the paper deals with observation, description, comparison, arrangement and classification, hypothesis construction, deduction, model, experiment, abstraction, and synthesis. The methodological aspects of the species-concept and of biological classification are dealt with in two final sections.
