PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL PEOPLE IN WATER MANAGEMENT: EVIDENCE FROM THE MAE SA WATERSHED, NORTHERN THAILAND AgEcon
Heyd, Helene; Neef, Andreas.
In the early 1990s, Thailand launched an ambitious program of decentralized governance, conferring greater responsibilities upon sub-district administrations and providing fiscal opportunities for local development planning. This process was reinforced by Thailand’s new Constitution of 1997, which explicitly assures individuals, communities and local authorities the right to participate in the management of natural resources. Drawing on a study of water management in the Mae Sa watershed, northern Thailand, this study analyzes to what extent the constitutional right for participation has been put into practice. To this end, a stakeholder analysis was conducted in the watershed, with a focus on the local people’s interests and strategies in water management...

Pigeonpea improvement AgEcon
Ryan, James G..
This study was commissioned by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to evaluate the economic impact of two projects (8201 and 8567) for which ACIAR provided support from 1982–89. These projects were aimed at the improvement of the grain yield potential of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) using modern plant breeding, along with associated physiological, agronomic, processing and socioeconomic research. The commissioned organisation in Australia was the University of Queensland. The partners were: Fiji (Ministry of Primary Industries, Native Land Development Corporation); Indonesia (Central Research Institute for Food Crops, Agency for Agricultural Research and Development); India (Indian Council for Agricultural Research,...

Fruit fly in Malaysia and Thailand 1985-1993 AgEcon
Collins, B.A.; Collins, David J..
Fruit flies are a serious economic pest affecting horticultural production world-wide. Increasing coordination of activities between neighbouring countries and those countries involved in fresh fruit trade is leading to more effective regional management of the fruit fly pest. 1.1 ACIAR Research Projects. ACIAR has supported fruit fly research in developing countries since 1984. Two projects, based in Thailand and Malaysia, have generated significant scientific and economic outcomes. The total cost of these two projects was $1.7m (in 1996 dollars). Specific outcomes include: 1. A more detailed understanding of exotic fruit fly species, their host range, pest status and spatial distribution; 2. Increased interest in fruit fly management in Thailand and...

Reducing fish losses due to Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome - An Ex Ante Evaluation AgEcon
Centre for International Economics.
The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) project no. 9130 established causes and control measures for epizootic ulcerative syndrome, a major killer of wild and cultured fish. The project cost $1.7 million dollars and, based on conservative assumptions, could yield net benefits (in present value terms) of $56 million. These significant benefits are a result of the importance of fish production in Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, both as a commercial crop and a source of subsistence income. These benefits are based on the assumption that the knowledge obtained from the project is actually adopted by fish producers and others. There is no guarantee of this, and the results should be interpreted in that light. This also suggests...

Potential income gains for rural households in North Eastern Thailand through trade with organic products AgEcon
Morawetz, Ulrich B.; Wongprawmas, Rungsaran; Haas, Rainer.
The study groups households in North Eastern Thailand according their income and grade of specialisation in crop production to derive representative household types. For these household types a linear optimization model is run to calculate net incomes under four scenarios. These are certified organic farming, organic farming in the initial and transitional phase and a self-sufficient farming. Simulations for the different management scenarios show that per ha cash profits are about double under certification while they can only be increased by 30 percent under self-sufficient farming, even under favourable assumptions. But transition costs to organic farming are high due to reduced yields at the beginning. According to the figures and model used, only...

New Product Development in Thai Agro-Industry: Explaining the Rates of Innovation and Success in Innovation AgEcon
Dhamvithee, Pisit; Shankar, Bhavani; Jangchud, Anuvat; Wuttijumnong, Phaisarn.
The Thai food industry is amongst the most dynamic and diverse in the world. Continual innovation in the form of new product development is critical to this industry, and yet new products are more likely to fail than succeed. In this paper,we investigate factors explaining both the rate of new product development as well as the rate of success in products newly introduced into the market, using data from a survey of firms. The methodology involves a Poisson regression to investigate the determinants of innovation and a Least Squares regression to explain success rates in innovation.

Improved drying of high moisture grains AgEcon
McLeod, Ross.
An economic evaluation of three ACIAR projects whose primary objective was to improve postharvest grain drying in Thailand and Australia is provided in this report. During 1983–1996, ACIAR invested A$1.2 million in research designed to improve grain drying in these countries. Based on current adoption, the investment has resulted in a realised net present value of A$3.6 million. A benefit–cost ratio of 3:1 was estimated for the projects. In other words, for each dollar invested, three dollars of project benefits have resulted. A high proportion of realised benefits was estimated to accrue to Australian rice producers, through reduced grain drying costs, while benefits have also been captured by the Thai rice production industry through reduced postharvest...

Modelling Water Use in Thailand AgEcon
Piyanuch, Wuttisorn; MacAulay, T. Gordon; Batterham, Robert L..
In this paper a model is proposed for analysing alternative policies that might be used in allocating water in Thailand. The model used is an integration of farm linear programming models with a spatial equilibrium model, using the so-called price-linked farm and spatial model (Batterham and MacAulay, 1994). A method of linking spatial equilibrium models and linear programming representations of farm models via the demand side as opposed to the supply side is outlined in this paper. A case study is made of the Chao Phraya Delta, an area that is progressively challenged by competing claims for water use and which needs to better allocate water resources.

The microanatomy of the central nervous system and brain of the Indo-Pacific seahorse, Hippocampus barbouri, during development Rev. Bras. Zool.
Senarat,Sinlapachai; Kettratad,Jes; Kaneko,Gen; Kamnurdnin,Thatpon; Sudtongkong,Chanyut.
ABSTRACT The central nervous system (CNS) of Teleostei is a complex system of self-governance and its morphology is reflected in the physiological and reproductive behaviors. The Indo-Pacific seahorse, Hippocampus barbouri Jordan & Richard son, 1908, is a new candidate species for aquaculture in Thailand. In this study, we investigated the brain morphology of H. barbouri across various developmental windows. Light microscopic observations of adult brains revealed a large optic tectum in the mesencephalon, whereas the cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum are of medium size. The detailed brain structures were generally similar to those of other teleosts; however, only five distinct layers were present in the optic tectum, including the stratum...

Brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major insect pest of rice in Thailand.Because of their ability to adapt to host plant and environment, the BPH becomes an extremely destructive pest and difficult to control. The purpose of this research is to monitor the insecticide resistance of BPH in North Eastern (NE) Thailand. The BPH populations were collected from the outbreak areas in 9provinces during 2011 to 2012. The toxicity (LD50) of 10 insecticides was conducted using Topical bioassay method. The results showed that the BPH populations from 7 provinces were resistant to ethiprole and isoprocarb. The NongBua Lam Phu population was the widest spectrum of resistance to the tested insecticides, whereas, the BPH population from Sisaket was...
