OPTIMAL USE OF QUALITATIVE MODELS: AN APPLICATION TO COUNTRY GRAIN ELEVATOR BANKRUPTCIES AgEcon
Kaylen, Michael S.; Devino, Gary T.; Procter, Michael H..
Qualitative models can be used for decision making under uncertainty. This provides a useful framework for evaluating the models. If the costs for every action/state of nature combination are known, decisions made using a well-calibrated model would result in actual costs being close to expected costs. In addition, the actual cost can be compared to the cost of perfect foresight actions, giving a bound on the value of a better model. Application of these procedures is made using a logit model developed to predict Missouri country grain elevator bankruptcy.

Identifying National and International Vacuums Potentially Impacting NAFTA and Indigenous Peoples AgEcon
Phillips, Valerie J..
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was made among three nation-states, Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Each of these nation-states has indigenous populations within its borders. Each has chosen different legal mechanisms for interacting with indigenous peoples. For example, the United States has an extensive web of treaties with the tribes within its borders while Canada, in contrast, has relatively few. All three nation-states have grappled with armed conflicts with indigenous peoples well into the 20th century. Indigenous peoples within each have long social, cultural, economic, and political histories which cross the borders of these countries. Within the provisions of NAFTA, each nation-state reserved the right to deny investors...

LOSSES IN THE LOGISTICAL SYSTEM: THE CASE OF PERISHABLES AgEcon
Beilock, Richard P..
The potential for losses in the logistical system is particularly great for perishables, as they are sensitive to time, climatic conditions, and handling. However, the literature is virtually silent regarding the extent and causes of such losses. This paper reports the results of a study of freight claims for produce and ornamentals. The results indicate that losses are of a magnitude that should merit the attention of shippers, carriers, and receivers. Various loss reducing measures are suggested.

MARKET INVERSION IN COMMODITY FUTURES PRICES AgEcon
Yoon, Byung-Sam; Brorsen, B. Wade.
In an inverted market, current prices are higher than future prices and thus the price of storage is negative. Market inversions as measured with futures spreads rarely occur during early months of the crop year. However, market inversions frequently occur across crop years and near the end of the crop year. In the last half of the crop year, market inversions clearly reflect a signal to sell stocks. Too few inversions occur early in the crop year to reach a definitive conclusion for that period. Behavioral finance offers possible explanations of why producers would hold stocks in an inverted market.

EVALUATING THE RETURNS TO VARIABLE RATE NITROGEN APPLICATION AgEcon
Roberts, Roland K.; English, Burton C.; Mahajanashetti, S.B..
Potential benefits of variable rate nitrogen application are illustrated and information needs identified. Lower costs of precision farming services, higher crop prices, and greater divergence in yield response potentials across management zones reduce the spatial variability required for profitable variable rate application. Information needs include identification and measurement of management zones within a field and estimation of management zone yield response functions, crop and input prices, and the cost of precision farming services.

Setting Research Priority for Livestock Sector in Gujarat AgEcon
Das, N.C.; Khunt, K.A..
Research resource allocation strategy has been worked out for the livestock sector across districts/ regions of the Gujarat state by using multi-criteria scoring model. The study has covered all the 19 districts of the state and six livestock species. In the commodity priority, the highest share (83%) has been claimed by milk research, followed by draught power (15%). The research share of meat, egg, skin and hair & wool is very low. The trend has been found same in the state as well as the districts. Within milk research, buffalo milk has got the highest priority in all the districts and research on poultry meat has claimed the highest share in meat research in most of the districts. The hide research should focus on the goat hide in the most of the...

Antidumping and Market Power in the Agriculture Sector, with a Special Case Study of the Fresh Tomato Industry AgEcon
Baylis, Katherine R..
In this article we highlight the anticompetitive nature of antidumping (AD) legislation. Antidumping legislation was set up to protect domestic firms from predatory pricing by foreign firms. We argue that protecting highly concentrated industries drastically reduces competition at home. In cases where the industry consists only of one or two firms, import restriction may breed monopolies at the expense of domestic consumers. This article looks at cases filed by the agriculture sector, and at the market concentration of industries in this sector, to illustrate the above possibility. We study the case of fresh tomatoes in detail to further demonstrate the anticompetitive nature of AD legislation. We show the effect of AD legislation on imports, as well as...

AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF IMPORTANCE RATINGS OF MEAT ATTRIBUTES BY LOUISIANA AND TEXAS CONSUMERS AgEcon
Hui, Jianguo; McLean-Meyinsse, Patricia E.; Jones, Dewitt.
This study provides an empirical investigation of how consumers rate meat attributes. Results show an importance order for 12 selected meat attributes and reveal some relationships between the importance ratings and consumer's demographic or socioeconomic characteristics. The findings suggest that (1) the meat marketing strategy should focus on freshness, taste, and appearance; (2) nutritional attributes have become important factors in the meat purchasing decision of female, educated, and married consumers; (3) older, married, low-income, or non-white consumers still remain price conscious; and (4) USDA label has become an important symbol of meat quality and safety to older, female, Baptist, and high-income consumers.

Blume, Roni; Hoff, Debora Nayar; Pedrozo, Eugenio Avila.
The new tendencies of the fine wine global consumer market have challenged organizations to observe their resources more efficiently in order to better structure and organize their strategies towards greater competitiveness and sustainability. Based on the Competitiveness and Resource-Based View approach, together with a study of certain market patterns and tendencies, this work aimed to evaluate how certain categories of resources are being managed in an attempt to promote the competitiveness of the fine wines from São Joaquim, a recent and little studied producing region in Santa Catarina state. A Study on the Extent of Adoption of Various Recommended Technologies in Wheat Cultivation in Punjab AgEcon
Singh, Mandeep; Chahal, S.S..
The extent of adoption of various recommended production technologies and returns from wheat crop in Punjab have been studied for the years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. The results reveal that the area under recommended varieties of wheat has decreased from 95.29 per cent in 2006-07 to 90.63 per cent in 2008-09. At the same time, it has been observed that a majority of the sample farmers grow wheat at recommended time by using recommended quantity of seed per acre. Although the percentage of farmers who treat the seed before sowing wheat crop has increased from 27.81 per cent in 2006-07 to 39.00 per cent in 2008-09, still a majority of the farmers do not follow this technology. It has been advocated by the PAU that zero tillage of wheat can save up to Rs...

FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF AGRICULTURAL REAL ESTATE DEBT AgEcon
Boyette, Deborah K.; White, Fred C..
A market share analysis is undertaken to determine the contribution of the size of market effect, the distribution effect, and the competitive effect, the distribution effect, and the competitive effect to gains for the five major farm real estate lenders. Results are used as a basis for selection of variables for a demand-supply analysis. Separate demand and supply equations for new farm real estate debt over the 1951-81 period are estimated by three-stage least squares for three major lending groups. The results are used as a basis for simulation of Federal Land Bank supply response to selected policy changes. If current market conditions continue through 1990, FLB market share is expected to decrease 12.34 percent over the 1987-90 period. Higher FLB...
