The planktonic stages of the salmon louse ( Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are tolerant of end-of-century p CO2 concentrations ArchiMer
Thompson, Cameron R.s.; Fields, David M.; Bjelland, Reidun M.; Chan, Vera Bin San; Durif, Caroline M.f.; Mount, Andrew; Runge, Jeffrey A.; Shema, Steven D.; Skiftesvik, Anne Berit; Browman, Howard I..
The copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is an obligate ectoparasite of salmonids. Salmon lice are major pests in salmon aquaculture and due to its economic impact Lepeoph- theirus salmonis is one of the most well studied species of marine parasite. However, there is limited understanding of how increased concentration of pCO2 associated with ocean acidification will impact host-parasite relationships. We investigated the effects of increased pCO2 on growth and metabolic rates in the planktonic stages, rearing L. salmonis from eggs to 12 days post hatch copepodids under three treatment levels: Control (416 matm), Mid (747 matm), and High (942 matm). The pCO2 treatment had a significant effect on oxygen consumption rate with the High treatment animals exhibiting...

When riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) meets labile DOM in coastal waters: changes in bacterial community activity and composition ArchiMer
Blanchet, Marine; Pringault, Olivier; Panagiotopoulos, Christos; Lefevre, Dominique; Charriere, Bruno; Ghiglione, Jean-francois; Fernandez, Camila; Aparicio, Fran L.; Marrase, Celia; Catala, Philippe; Oriol, Louise; Caparros, Jocelyne; Joux, Fabien.
Heterotrophic bacterial communities in marine environments are exposed to a heterogeneous mixture of dissolved organic compounds with different bioreactivity that may control both their activity and composition. The coastal environment is an example of a mixing area where recalcitrant allochthonous organic matter from rivers can encounter labile organic matter from marine phytoplanktonic blooms. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of mixed qualities of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on bacterial community activity (BCA) and bacterial community composition (BCC) and to test for a priming effect when DOM sources are added in combination. Coastal marine bacterial communities were incubated separately with a mixture of amino acids and with...

Oceanic mercury concentrations on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar decreased between 1989 and 2012 ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Knoery, Joel; Boye, Marie; Marusczak, Nicolas; Thomas, Bastien; Courau, Philippe; Sprovieri, Francesca.
Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that threatens the health of aquatic ecosystems and fish consumers. Its natural cycle has been deeply perturbed by Anthropogenic Hg emissions have deeply perturbed its natural cycle, especially since the start of the Industrial Revolution circa 1850 CE. Anthropogenic Hg emissions from North America and Europe have decreased by a factor of two in the last decades following the implementation of strict regulations. The response of North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean waters to this decrease remains poorly documented by field observations. A comparison of results obtained between 1989 and 2012 shows a significant decrease of Hg concentrations in waters on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. West of Gibraltar, the Hg decrease...

Stability of an isolated pancake vortex in continuously stratified-rotating fluids ArchiMer
Yim, Eunok; Billant, Paul; Menesguen, Claire.
This paper investigates the stability of an axisymmetric pancake vortex with Gaussian angular velocity in radial and vertical directions in a continuously stratified-rotating fluid. The different instabilities are determined as a function of the Rossby number Ro, Froude number Fh, Reynolds number Re and aspect ratio α. Centrifugal instability is not significantly different from the case of a columnar vortex due to its short-wavelength nature: it is dominant when the absolute Rossby number |Ro| is large and is stabilized for small and moderate |Ro| when the generalized Rayleigh discriminant is positive everywhere. The Gent–McWilliams instability, also known as internal instability, is then dominant for the azimuthal wavenumber m=1 when the Burger number...

Spatial Variations in Archaeal Lipids of Surface Water and Core-Top Sediments in the South China Sea and Their Implications for Paleoclimate Studies ArchiMer
Wei, Yuli; Wang, Jinxiang; Liu, Jie; Dong, Liang; Li, Li; Wang, Hui; Wang, Peng; Zhao, Meixun; Zhang, Chuanlun L.
The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean, yet little is known about archaeal distributions and TEX86-based temperatures in this unique oceanic setting. Here we report findings of abundances in both core lipids (CL) and intact polar lipids (IPL) of Archaea from surface water (CL only) and core-top sediments from different regions of the SCS. TEX86-derived temperatures were also calculated for these samples. The surface water had extremely low abundances of CL (average of 0.05 +/- 0.13 ng/liter; n = 75), with higher values present in regions where upwelling is known to occur. The core-top sediments had CL values of 0.1 to 0.9 mu g/g, which are on the low end of CL concentrations reported for other marine sediments...

Protein hydrolysates from yeast and pig blood as alternative raw materials in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae ArchiMer
Gisbert, Enric; Skalli, Ali; Fernandez, Ignacio; Kotzamanis, Yannis; Zambonino, Jose Luiz; Fabregat, Rogelio.
In this study, we have evaluated the incorporation of two types of protein hydrolysates at 9 and 12% levels of inclusion, one from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, YPH) and another one from pig blood (PBPH), in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurora) larvae, and compared these results to a microdiet containing fish protein hydrolysate and another group only fed with enriched live prey (rotifers and Artemia). The trial consisted in substituting up to 75% (wt/wt) the enriched Artemia with the experimental microdiets from 15 to 40 days post-hatch, whereas larvae were exclusively fed on microdiets from 40 to 55 dph. Protein hydrolysates used in the present study were obtained from different raw materials (yeast, pig blood and fish protein...

Cavanie, Alain.
The spectral energy distribution of sea waves is supplied four times a day by the French Meteorological Office's DsAs model using the pressure distribution over the atlantic as input. The surface-motion spectrum furnished by the model may then be used to estimate the local current spectrum near the sea bed. The present study is based on four years (1970-1974) of DSAs data for the so-called Brittany point (47"30 N. 5"W). The data correlates reasonably well with observations made from ships in the region lying between 40 - 50 N and O - 10 W (Figure 1) . . . Plotted on Weibull paper in Figure 2 are the cumulative probability values of U as calculated from the DSAs data (U is the mean of the upper third of maximum current values at a depth of 100 m). Traité de zoologie ArchiMer
Claus, C..

Combining ecosystem indicators and life cycle assessment for environmental assessment of demersal trawling in Tunisia ArchiMer
Abdou, Khaled; Le Loc'H, Francois; Gascuel, Didier; Romdhane, Mohamed Salah; Aubin, Joel; Ben Rais Lasram, Frida.
Purpose The present study assesses environmental performance of seafood production by demersal trawling in Tunisia (Gulf of Gabes) in order to analyze the contribution of each production stage to environmental impacts and to understand drivers of the impacts using life cycle assessment (LCA). Then a set of ecosystem quality indicators were determined using an ecosystem modeling tool, Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE), and were combined with LCA to increase the relevance of both tools' assessments when applied to fisheries. Methods The approach consisted of conducting LCA and calculating ecosystem indicators to provide a complete assessment of trawling's environmental impacts and the ecosystem characteristics associated with seafood production. The functional unit...

Open-air treatment of wastewater from land-based marine fish farms in extensive and intensive systems: current technology and future perspectives ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome; Lefebvre, Sébastien; Brossard, Nicolas.
Marine land-based fish farms located in coastal wetlands (salt-pond zones, lagoon banks, etc.), whether extensive or intensive, send farm effluents directly to the sea or after short periods of stocking in retention reservoirs. The aims of our investigation have been to compare the efficiency of current and potential water treatment procedures in open-air. Wastewater retention ponds in commercial farms (Atlantic coasts of France) are efficient in removing up to 1 metric ton of particulate material (dry weight) per hectare and per day (faeces and unconsumed feed), but are inefficient in reducing dissolved wastes, both organic (urea, amino acids, protein) and inorganic (total ammonia nitrogen, phosphates). Forthcoming outdoor technology to treat these forms...

The integrated biomarker response revisited: optimization to avoid misuse ArchiMer
Devin, S.; Burgeot, Thierry; Giamberini, L.; Minguez, L.; Pain-devin, S..
The growing need to evaluate the quality of aquatic ecosystems led to the development of numerous monitoring tools. Among them, the development of biomarker-based procedures, that combine precocity and relevance, is recommended. However, multi-biomarker approaches are often hard to interpret, and produce results that are not easy to integrate in the environmental policies framework. Integrative index have been developed, and one of the most used is the integrated biomarker response (IBR). However, an analysis of available literature demonstrated that the IBR suffers from a frequent misuse and a bias in its calculation. Then, we propose here a new calculation method based on both a more simple formula and a permutation procedure. Together, these...

Deep diving service submarines ArchiMer
Freitas, A.
Service submarines have been developed for support duties in offshore operations in deep waters. Three submarine concepts have been designed for water depths ranging from 400 to 1500 m. The operation philosophy is to use an autonomous manned submarine as a carrier for components, tools and work modules and as a base for IMR operations on subsea installations. The design principles are similar to that of the Space Shuttle incorporating a payload bay, energy supply and a closed environment for the crew and operators. The operation profile of an offshore submarine demands capabilities above those of naval submarines: deep diving, long endurance underwater, dynamic positioning. New technology had to be developed: air-independent energy system, regenerative...

Salinity influences disease-induced mortality of the oyster Crassostrea gigas and infectivity of the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) ArchiMer
Fuhrmann, Marine; Petton, Bruno; Quillien, Virgile; Faury, Nicole; Morga, Benjamin; Pernet, Fabrice.
Mortality of young Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas associated with the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) is occurring worldwide. Here, we examined for the first time the effect of salinity on OsHV-1 transmission and disease-related mortality of C. gigas, as well as salinity-related effects on the pathogen itself. To obtain donors for OsHV-1 transmission, we transferred laboratory-raised oysters to an estuary during a disease outbreak and then back to the laboratory. Oysters that tested OsHV-1 positive were placed in seawater tanks (35‰, 21°C). Water from these tanks was used to infect naïve oysters in 2 experimental setups: (1) oysters acclimated or non-acclimated to a salinity of 10, 15, 25 and 35‰ and (2) oysters acclimated to a salinity of 25‰; the...

Cold storage of Pacific oysters out of water: biometry, intervalval water and sensory assessment ArchiMer
Buzin, Florence; Baudon, Violaine; Cardinal, Mireille; Barille, Laurent; Haure, Joel.
Due to the important economic activity of oyster production in France, microalgal toxic events represent a significant constraint for shellfish farmers who face closures of bivalve production-sites. The frequency of closures of 3 weeks or less represents half of the total closures along the French coasts. Cold storage could be a simple and affordable solution for temporary and short-term storage before commercialisation. A stock of marketable Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was therefore stored during 22 days in non-immersed conditions at 3 degrees C with 100% humidity. At the end of the experiment, the oyster mortality rate remained at a low level of less than 3.5%. The sensory attributes, odour, appearance, texture and flavour, did not show significant...

Beaudelin, P.; Charles-dominique, E.; Do Chi, T..
The fish reserves in the Arcachon basin are a semi-natural lagoon complex which are suitable for the analysis of various population dynamics problems. We will consider here the population of the shrimp Palacmonetea varians, an important link in the food chain between primary production, the production of meiofauna and that of exploitable species, e. g. bass, eel. Estimations of biomass and abundance are extremely important when one studies the quantitative production of macrofauna in a lagoon system. The methodology utilized (net traps, tagging methods and stock assessment by simple or multiple capture and recapture techniques) is particulary suited to the conditions of the milieu. Our results confirm the important role played by shrimp in the...

The ocean-continent transition in the uniform lithospheric stretching model : role of partial melting in the mantle ArchiMer
Foucher, Jean-paul; Le Pichon, Xavier; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
The role of partial melting in the uniform lithospheric stretching model of continental margin formation is explored. It is shown that the transition from continental lithosphere stretching to oceanic accretion is most probably controlled by the production of a significant amount of partial melting in the asthenosphere immediately below the lithosphere, which requires stretching factors larger than 3. It is also shown that, at stretching factors exceeding 2, the law of subsidence is significantly changed by the presence of partial melt in the underlying asthenosphere. The implications for the existence of deep continental margin basins on thinned continental crusts are examined. The Armorican deep continental margin basin is taken as an example. [NOT...

Chevallier, Claude; Masson, Daniel.
