HOW LABELING OF SAFETY AND PROCESS ATTRIBUTES AFFECTS MARKETS FOR FOOD AgEcon
Caswell, Julie A..
Consumers are increasingly considering information on the safety and process (how foods are produced) attributes of food in making their buying decisions. Producers, processors, and retailers may choose voluntary labeling of these attributes, may be required to label by government regulations, or may use a combination of these approaches. The market effects depend on consumer perceptions of the attributes, the benefits and costs of labeling for companies, and the goals of government policy. These effects are illustrated through a discussion of labeling of foods that are produced with the use of biotechnology (genetically modified organisms) or that are organically grown.

AGRIBUSINESS: KNOWLEDGE AND INNOVATION PRIORITIES; ASPIRATIONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AgEcon
The present report presents the NRLO views on knowledge and innovation priorities for Dutch agribusiness in the years ahead as seen in an international perspective. Knowledge and innovation priorities are highlighted against the backdrop of key challenges facing Dutch agribusiness in the years to come. Major challenges include: To turn from reactive to proactive policy-making based on a broad range of values. The challenge facing agribusiness is that it should assume partial responsibility for maintaining and protecting ecological, cultural, ethical and spatial values. To transform agro-chains into responsive, flexible networks involving other sectors besides agribusiness (such as the transport and distribution sectors, non-food industries). To...

Accumulative Pollution, "Clean Technology," and Policy Design AgEcon
Withagen, Cees; Toman, Michael.
Environmental policymakers must address the adverse effects of a number of pollutants that accumulate in the environment. Goals for the regulation of these damages often involve holding long-term emissions below a level deemed to be "dangerous", or outright banning of offending products or processes along with subsidization of more "green" alternatives. This paper builds upon previous studies by Keeler, Spence, and Zeckhauser (1971) and Tahvonen and Withagen (1996) in addressing the optimal long-term management of an accumulative but assimilatable pollutant through policies that restrict more damaging production processes and thereby induce more benign alternatives. Using a simple general equilibrium approach, we consider the possibility that the...

STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT PROGRAMS AND PEANUT MARKET PERFORMANCE IN SENEGAL AgEcon
Lopez, Rigoberto A.; Hathie, Ibrahima.
The impacts of Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) on social welfare are investigated using data from the Senegalese peanut sector. The findings suggest that SAP policies resulted in dramatic decreases in peanut production, undermining the profitability of the peanut processing plants as well. Overall, the Senegalese society suffered net welfare losses.

Policy Analysis in a Second-Best World AgEcon
Parry, Ian W.H.; Oates, Wallace E..
This paper first describes the new literature in environmental economics on the socalled "double dividend" and then explores its implications for a broad range of economic issues. The basic finding in this literature is that in a second-best, general equilibrium setting, environmental measures raise costs and prices and thereby reduce the real wage. This rise in the cost of living reduces slightly the quantity of labor supplied in an already highly distorted labor market, giving rise to losses in social welfare that can be large relative to the basic welfare gains from improved environmental policy. These losses may be offset to some extent by using revenues (if any) from the environmental programs to reduce existing taxes on labor. This same line of...

Farmers Markets: Producers Characteristics and Status of Their Businesses AgEcon
Govindasamy, Ramu; Zurbriggen, Marta; Italia, John; Adelaja, Adesoji O.; Nitzsche, Peter; VanVranken, Richard.
The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the attributes of producers who participate in farmers’ markets and to examine different aspects of their operations. In addition to demographics, the characteristics explored in this report include farm size, acreage grown, wholesale and retail activities, location, and personnel employed. Data related to business development, ownership status, days of operation, products sold, marketing and organic production was also collected. The results show that the majority of New Jersey growers who retail through farmers’ markets began this type of activity since 1990 and while their businesses were still in a state of growth. However, the average number of acres planted and workers employed characterized...

Population and Sustainability: Understanding Population, Environment, and Development Linkages AgEcon
Clay, Daniel C.; Reardon, Thomas.
The triple challenge of rapid population growth, declining agricultural productivity, and natural resource degradation are not isolated from one another; they are intimately related. However, strategic planning and development programming tend to focus on individual sectors such as the environment, agriculture, and population; they do not explicitly take into account the compatibilities and inconsistencies among them. Farm households and their livelihood strategies are at the core of the intersectoral linkages approach advocated in this chapter. Three key aspects of the population-environment-development debate are discussed: first, the finding that inconsistencies between public and individual household behavior regarding childbearing and family planning...

Protecting the Environment in Transitional Situations AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Discusses the possible relevance of the Kuznets environmental curve to centrally planned economies and compares their situation with that for market economies. Claims that Kuznets environmental curves apply to ‘normal’ situations and so give little guide to environmental impacts of economies in transition. Difficulties encountered in protecting the environment in transitional situations are given special consideration. The environmental experiences of Eastern and Central Europe, Russia and China are discussed. Their different methods of social and economic transformation and varied economic fortunes have had divergent environmental consequences in these countries. When negative economic growth has occurred in transition over a long period, as in Russia,...

THE LINK BETWEEN FARMGATE AND WORLD PRICES IN THE WAKE OF TRADE LIBERALIZATION: THE CASE OF COLOMBIA AgEcon
Jaramillo, Carlos Felipe; Nupia, Oskar Andres.
The study measures the extent to which farmgate price levels have effectively increased their degree of integration with world price movements following trade liberalization in Columbia. Results show that the extent of integration varies greatly depending upon the crop, and that market-specific policies have isolated some farmers from international influences.

INTEGRATED SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: A MULTICRITERIA APPROACH AgEcon
Bazzani, Guido Maria.
The paper presents the first results of a long term research aimed at producing a decision support system to deal with the integrated solid waste management planning at regional level. In the last years urban waste management has received a strong attention from the public authority in Italy culminating in a new national law, which has priorities such as waste prevention (waste avoidance and reduction) reuse and recycling. Italian Legislation requires to consider not only a series of waste management options aimed at source reduction but also to integrate the environmental soundness with economical viability and social equity. To support this integrated solid waste management it is necessary to ascertain the environmental, economic and social impacts...

CONDUCT AND VOLATILITY IN FOOD-PRICE DETERMINATION: VAR EVIDENCE FROM TURKISH AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Holloway, Garth J.; Bayaner, Ahmet.
The relationship between price volatility and competition is examined. A theoretic, vector autoregressions on farm prices of wheat and retail prices of derivatives (flour, bread, pasta, bulgur and cookies) are compared to results from a dynamic, simultaneous-equations model with theory-based farm-to-retail linkages. Analytical results yield insights about numbers of firms and their impacts on demand- and supply-side multipliers, but the applications to Turkish time series (1988:1-1996:12) yield mixed results.

Non-Market Valuation and the Household AgEcon
Smith, V. Kerry; van Houtven, George.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the implications of the collective model of household behavior for the methods used to estimate the economic value of non-marketed environmental resources. The effects of public good and risk are considered, along with revealed and stated preference methods. To the extent the collective framework is adopted, then recover of individual preferences from household behavior requires distinguishing how preference and within household income allocations affect choices.

MEDIATION IN THE NORWEGIAN LAND CONSOLIDATION COURTS AgEcon
Rognes, Jorn; Sky, Per Kare.
In Norway land consolidation is organized entirely within the judicial system. This paper describes how land consolidation courts work, and examines mediation activities in the courts. Questionnaires were used to get data on 727 cases in 1996, and in-depth interviews with 23 judges were used to get information on mediation behavior. The results indicate that mediation is a frequent activity. Many cases are settled through mediation rather than by verdicts. Mediation activities vary with case type, complexity, significance and conflict level. Mediation activities reduce conflicts even in those cases where final decisions are made through verdicts. Cases that have a mediated settlement are generally less complex, less significant and have lower conflict...

ESTIMATING GENDER DIFFERENCES IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY: BIASES DUE TO OMISSION OF GENDER-INFLUENCED VARIABLES AND ENDOGENEITY OF REGRESSORS AgEcon
Lilja, Nina K.; Randolph, Thomas F.; Diallo, Abrahmane.
This study evaluates managerial differences between men and women and assesses the degree of bias introduced by omission of gender-influenced variables and ignoring the endogeneity of farmer characteristics and input levels. The results also give insight to improving research methods for isolating the gender impact on productivity.

Examining long-run relationships between Australian beef prices AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R..
Cointegration and impulse response analyses are used to investigate the short‐run and long‐run dynamics of the Australian beef market. The aim of this study is to determine whether long‐run relationships existed between Australian beef prices at the farm, wholesale and retail levels. Based on monthly data from 1971 to 1994, the results show that all three prices considered are cointegrated. Furthermore, the wholesale price is found to be weakly exogenous. The latter result might be an indication of market inefficiency due in part to price levelling often practised in the beef marketing system.

Advertising and Retail Promotion of Washington Apples: A Structural Latent Variable Approach to Promotion Evaluation AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Gao, Xiaoming; Patterson, Paul M..
"Commodity promotion" consists of many activities, each designed to contribute to a consumer's product knowledge or influence tastes. However, both knowledge and tastes are unobservable, or latent, variables influencing demand. This paper specifies a dynamic structural model of fresh fruit demand that treats promotion and other socioeconomic variables as "causal" variables influencing these latent variables. Estimating this state-space model using a Kalman filter approach provides estimates of both the system parameters and a latent variable series. The results show that these latent effects contribute positively to apple and other fruit consumption, while reducing banana consumption.

Testing the Theory: Vertical Strategic Interaction and Demand Functional Form AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W.; Putsis, William P., Jr..
Formulating theoretical models inevitably requires various simplifications that assist in making analysis tractable and that facilitate deriving closed form solutions. While the strategic insights gained from theoretical models of market phenomena are often quite valuable, testing the theoretical assumptions made in these models can aid in assessing the broader applicability of the conclusions drawn. This is particularly true in the channels area, where the focus of research to date has largely been theoretical in nature. In an initial attempt to examine some of the assumptions made in previous theoretical research (e.g., Jeuland and Shugan 1983, McGuire and Staelin 1983, Choi 1991, Raju, Sethuraman and Dhar 1995), we focus on a limited set of issues....
