Minervini,Mariana G; Morrás,Héctor J. M; Taboada,Miguel A.

Organisation of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage in tropical streams of different orders in North-Eastern Brazil Ecología austral
Gomes Pio,Jéssica F; da Silva Pereira,Tiago; Calor,Adolfo R; Copatti,Carlos E.
We selected streams located in north-eastern Brazil with the objective of assessing the effect of streams of different orders (1st, 2nd, 3rd) on the distribution and composition of benthic macroinvertebrates in the rainy and dry seasons. A total of 12822 individuals and 62 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were obtained, of which Chironomidae was the taxon with the most individuals (60.08% of the total). The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage ordination demonstrated that streams of the 3rd order had a different assemblage structure compared to streams of the 1st and 2nd order. This distinction may be the result of taxa substitution. The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was correlated with environmental variables. In conclusion, the...

Yezzi,Alejandra L; Nebbia,Ana J; Zalba,Sergio M.

Invertebrate composition in submerged macrophyte debris: habitat and degradation time effects Ecología austral
Faria Albertoni,Edélti; Ubiratan Hepp,Luiz; Carvalho,Cristiane; Palma-Silva,Cleber.
The aim of this study was to determine if the rate of degradation and the habitat type associated with two submersed macrophytes affect the structure of the invertebrate communities in a shallow subtropical lake. We evaluated debris decomposition rate with a litter bags approach, assigned to four treatments: Potamogeton pectinatus decomposing inside their own stand (PP) and inside a Chara zeylanica stand (PC), and C. zeylanica decomposing inside their own stand (CC) and inside a P. pectinatus stand (CP). During the degradation experiment (20 days), we evaluated the fauna associated both with debris and at live macrophytes. The debris were washed, dried and the coefficient of degradation was determined. We estimated the richness and abundance of taxa of...

Alberti,Juan; Daleo,Pedro; Iribarne,Oscar.

PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF JAPANESE QUAIL EGGS SUBMITTED TO ENVIRONMENTS WITH DIFFERENT LIGHT SPECTRUMS REA
Furtado,Dermeval A.; Braz,José R. B.; Nascimento,Jose W. B. do; Lopes Neto,José P.; Oliveira,Daniele L..
ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica), with 94 (+49) days of age, through the production and quality of the eggs, with the birds kept in environments illuminated with LED lamps in the colors white, blue and red. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with three treatments (lamp colors) and seven replications. In the three environments, the relative air temperature averages can be considered above the thermal comfort zone for quails; however, the black globe temperature index, humidity and the thermal radiation load can be considered comfortable. The laying percentage of the birds kept under white LED was inferior to those maintained in the red LED. The feed...

WOOD UTILIZATION OF Eucalyptus grandis IN STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS: DENSITIES AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES REA
Lahr,Francisco A. R.; Nogueira,Marta C. de J. A.; Araujo,Victor A. De; Vasconcelos,Juliano S.; Christoforo,André L..
ABSTRACT Over the years, the species of eucalyptus has become a multipurpose raw material. In addition, the most relevant aspect of the use for various purposes is related to the production of a high quality wood, coming from short duration plantations, which is fundamental to the current demand of the industries. However, its use in civil construction has not yet reached a level of importance, due to the low knowledge of many of its resistance properties and the consequent popular fear in the use of reforestation woods, in particular the Eucalyptus grandis. This research investigated its main mechanical properties, aiming to reinforce its constructive applications in wood structures. For this, two physical properties and fourteen mechanical properties, in...

MORTALITY, PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF EGGS OF DIFFERENT REARING SYSTEMS REA
Tavares,Bartira de O.; Pereira,Danilo F.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro; Mac-Lean,Priscilla A. Bustos.
ABSTRACT The conventional production of eggs in cage systems is intense and compromises the laying hens welfare. More demanding consumer markets have been pushing to abolish the use of cages and thus provide better welfare in poultry laying. This research evaluated the mortality, production, and egg quality of two alternative production systems (free-range and organic free range free-range) and compared them with the conventional system. The research was carried out in two commercial poultry farms and the variables egg weight, shell egg resistance, Haugh unit, mortality and production were recorded during eight months. The results showed that the conventional system presented better production, lower mortality and better shell egg quality. The alternative...

NUTRIENT REMOVAL FROM SWINE WASTEWATER IN A COMBINED VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEM REA
Bôas,Regina B. Vilas; Fia,Ronaldo; Fia,Fátima R. L.; Campos,Alessandro T.; Souza,Gabriela R. de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the performance of a combined vertical flow (VFCW) and horizontal subsurface-flow (HFCW) constructed wetland systems built on a pilot scale and submitted to different configurations and organic load application rates of pre-treated swine wastewater (SWW) in anaerobic systems on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The average values of redox potential in the systems were between anoxic and aerobic conditions, favoring an increased nitrate concentration in VFCW. Nitrogen removal by VFCW–HFCW system can be considered as satisfactory, reaching removal values of 75%. VFCW and HFCW proved to be limited in phosphorus removal, reaching values of 48%.

DEFORMATION OF PEACHES SUBMITTED TO CYCLIC LOADING USING THE DISCRETE ELEMENT METHOD REA
Pinto,Eduardo M.; Ferraz,Antonio C. de O..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to use and validate a simple contact force model that describes the behavior of peaches stored in a wooden box, loaded cyclically, by using the discrete element method. The Kelvin-Voigt contact force model was used and the cyclic loading in the simulation was performed with an amplitude of 1 mm and frequency of 12 Hz for time intervals of 3600, 5400, and 7200 s. The laboratory test was performed with a peach box attached to a vibrating table by applying the same excitation conditions used in the simulation. For validation, model results were compared with those from the laboratory test by using deformation values of fruits in the contact regions. To measure this deformation, we adapted the methodology for determining the radius of...

TOPOGRAPHYC SHADOW INFLUENCE ON OPTICAL IMAGE ACQUIRED BY SATELLITE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE REA
França,Michelle M.; Fernandes Filho,Elpidio I.; Ferreira,Williams P. M.; Lani,João L.; Soares,Vicente P..
ABSTRACT During image acquisition, is usually chosen scenes with a lesser cloud cover to avoid loss of spectral information. However, when training samples are collected for image classification, the user finds shadowed areas. Such situation is similar to the presence of clouds since spectral information of these classes is the same in all optical bands of the sensor. This fact becomes more pronounced in mountainous relief areas due to shadow projection on the terrain, which can vary among all seasons during the solar year. With the goal to obtain images with a lower presence of shadow, it was simulated, under the same relief conditions, shading variation in function of latitude (0° to 40° S). Solar radiation models were processed for the days and times...

DEVELOPMENT OF A TRANSFER FUNCTION FOR WEIGHT PREDICTION OF LIVE BROILER CHICKEN USING MACHINE VISION REA
Amraei,Somaye; Mehdizadeh,Saman A.; Nääs,Irenilza de A..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to process digital images to investigate the possibility of broilers body weight estimation based on the dynamic model. For this experiment, 2440 images were recorded by a top-view camera from 30 birds. An ellipse fitting algorithm was applied to localize chickens within the pen, by using a generalized Hough transform. Chickens’ head and tail were removed efficiently using the Chan-Vese method. After that, using image processing, six body measures were calculated. Next, they were used to design a Transform Function (TF) model with weight measurements as output. Second-order dynamic models were used to predict the weight of life broiler chicken, without delay, stable and with the highest R2 were predominantly...

THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF SORPTION OF RICE IN THE HUSK REA
Zeymer,Juliana S.; Corrêa,Paulo C.; Oliveira,Gabriel H. H. de; Baptestini,Fernanda M.; Faria,Igor L..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the thermodynamic properties of sorption processes (desorption and adsorption) of rice in the husk, cv. Urucuia. A static-gravimetric method was used to reach equilibrium moisture content at different temperatures (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 °C ± 1°C) and relative humidity levels (10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 % ± 2%). A decrease in moisture content led to an increment of the integral isosteric heat of sorption, indicating a higher demand for energy to remove moisture from the product. Differential entropy of sorption decreased along with a moisture content increment, with higher values for desorption. This indicates a higher mobility of water molecules during desorption if compared to adsorption. Gibbs free energy decreased...
