PREFERENTIAL TRADE OF AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES IN THE CARIBBEAN BASIN AgEcon
Loper, Nathan; Abbott, Philip C.; Foster, Kenneth A..
Preferential agricultural trade under the Caribbean Basin Initiative has been beneficial to participating countries, particularly for differentiated goods. Estimating Production of Forest Cooperative Members AgEcon
Hoffman, Benjamin F., Jr..
This study develops methods of estimating annual marketings by members of forestry cooperatives in order to formulate a long range business plan for the cooperative. A reliable prediction of total annual sales by the cooperative is possible, but individual product estimates are subject to significant errors. The report details cautions concerning the development and implementation of projections and makes specific recommendations. The system also permitted estimation of landowner service needs.

THE IMPACT OF MARKET MECHANISMS AND HACCP REGULATION ON FOOD SAFETY QUALITY AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael.
Economists have long debated the relative effectiveness of markets and regulations in reaching socially desirable outcomes. This empirical study of meat and poultry food safety regulation suggests that market mechanisms and flexible regulatory instruments, e.g. HACCP systems, have a greater impact on food safety quality than less flexible regulatory instruments. Subject code: 9 (Food Safety and Nutrition).

Linking Science and Economics for Policy Advice: Case-study of Trees for Salinity Control AgEcon
Loane, Bill.
In the first part of this paper I wish to make some observations about the general subject of the workshop - the extent to which the sustainability debate has affected economic policy advice. This is based mainly on the experience with salinity control in Victoria. The second part is a case-study in the integration of science and economics for policy purposes, outlining a tree-salinity computer model I have been developing.

Water use and salinity in the Murray–Darling Basin: A state-contingent model AgEcon
Adamson, David; Mallawaarachchi, Thilak; Quiggin, John C..
The supply of water for irrigation is subject to climatic and policy uncertainty. The object of the present paper is to show how the linear and non-linear programming models commonly used in modelling problems such as those arising in the Murray–Darling Basin may be adapted to incorporate a state-contingent representation of uncertainty. Estimates showing the potential value of improved water use are also derived.

MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF THE "TIMING OF TIME" ON SHADOW VALUES OF LEISURE TIME AgEcon
Larson, Douglas M.; Lew, Daniel K.; Barrett, James M..
The "timing of leisure time" is important to determining its opportunity cost. Shadow values of different leisure activities from a model of consumer choice subject to multiple binding time constraints are estimated from survey data on peoples' preferences for different activities, their time and money costs, and their consumption choices.

Mata Matters: Subscripting AgEcon
Gould, William.
Mata is Stata’s matrix language. In the Mata Matters column, we show how Mata can be used interactively to solve problems and as a programming language to add new features to Stata. Subscripting is the subject of this column. Stata has three subscripting modes, and two of them are about more than accessing an element of a vector or matrix. The advanced forms of subscripting can, by themselves, be the solution to some problems.

OPTIMAL STRATEGIES FOR REGIONAL CULTIVAR TESTING FOR VARIOUS CROPS AgEcon
Kingwell, Ross S..
Before a variety is released for adoption by farmers in a region it is subject to comparative field testing. An economic issue is how extensive and prolonged should be this field testing within the region; over how many locations, years and with what number of plot replications should testing occur? This paper addresses this issue for the main broadacre crops grown in Western Australia and shows through sensitivity analysis how robust are the findings for each crop type. Findings are contrasted with those already published for southern New South Wales.

Economics of Integrated Watershed and Reservoir Management AgEcon
Lee, Yoon; Yoon, Taeyeon; Shah, Farhed A..
A dynamic optimization framework is used to analyze integrated watershed management and suggest appropriate policies. Soil conservation, reservoir level sediment release, downstream water allocation and water quality are subject to control. Application of the model to the Aswan Dam watershed illustrates the need for international cooperation to manage shared watersheds.
