Numerous marine fish species spend some time, within their biological cycle, in the restricted and unstable habitats that are coastal and estuarine feeding grounds. These ecosystems are essential for the growth and survival of young fishes. Some recent studies, conducted in the framework of the "Seine Aval 1 and 2" programs and of other projects, demonstrated that the Seine estuary was home to large numbers of juveniles (Morin et al., 1997) but that this estuary was subjected to a strong anthropic pressure interfering with the feeding ground function it should normally play. There is, indeed, a paradox between the nutritive availabilities provided by the estuary and the ichtyic communities exploiting this resource (Mouny, 1998); and this observation is... |

In this working document, the results of an otolith exchange 2016 on Cod (Gadus morhua) in the Celtic Sea are presented. Each year, stock assessment of cod in the Celtic Sea requires data to be compiled and compared. For example the age distribution from this year’s assessment is compared to historical data. In 2016, there has been a small number of one year olds. Consequently, the three main countries (France, Ireland and UK England) which contribute to the cod landings in Celtic Sea organised a small otolith exchange to verify the precision of age data between four readers. Mean precision of age estimate for individual fish had a coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.2% and percent agreement to modal age of 99.5%. There was only one image where two readers... |

For seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), Otolith and Scale Exchange Scheme 2011 was the first exchange. A total of 155 fish from Eastern English Channel (ICES area : VIId) was sampled on-board French research vessels (Gwen-Drez and Thalassa) during 2 international surveys (Channel Ground Fish Survey and International Bottom Trawl Survey). The length range of the fish was between 17 and 74 cm, with a mean length at 46.99 cm. For each fish, the Sagittae otoliths and few scales were used to compare the age estimation between both calcified pieces. 4 readers were participated from UK England (1 reader) and France (3 readers). Only images were used during this exchange. There were noted by the readers that it was very difficult to obtain an image of the scale with... |

Cockle (Cerastoderma edule) growth has not been studied a lot yet and the current approach of counting external ridges in order to make age estimation is limited. Nevertheless, growth is a key parameter for the monitoring of bivalve populations, which are heavily exploited in French estuaries. This morphometric study is based on the analysis of cockles shells collected in the Bay of Somme. This site, which has an area of 70 km², is located in the eastern Channel in the north of France, and is one of the most important French cockles fields. This analysis is part of a study of the dynamic of cockles stocks in the Bay of Somme, which shows sharp inter-annual abundance fluctuations. High-resolution pictures analysis were performed with the TNPC software... |

In September 2015, the Working Group on Biological Parameters (WGBIOP) recommended an otolith exchange for Mullus surmuletus and Mullus barbatus in 2016 (Otolith Exchanges proposals for 2016/2017; ICES, 2015). Kélig Mahe (IFREMER, France) was decided to be the responsible to organise this otolith exchange. Two otolith exchanges (2008, 2011), and two age reading workshops (ICES, 2009; 2012), have been taken place until now (Mahé et al., 2012). A total of 13 readers from 5 countries (France, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Greece) participated at the exchange of 2016. The otoliths of 465 individuals (345 M. barbatus & 120 M. surmuletus), sampled from 2011 to 2014 in the Mediterranean Sea (Central Adriatic Sea, Cyprus, Levantine Spain coasts, Balearic Islands)... |

Background. Bastard grunt, Pomadasys incisus (Bowdich, 1825), is reported as a well-established species in the Mediterranean Sea. Although bastard grunt has rapidly expanded its area of distribution in the Mediterranean, there is no information about its age and growth. The aim of this study was to provide data about growth, condition, and first sexual maturity of the species in order to contribute to a better management of its fishery. Materials and methods. A total of 515 specimens of bastard grunt were caught in the Gulf of Tunis. The age was determined from otoliths. Length–weight relation, von Bertalanffy equation, and growth rate were employed to evaluate the fish growth. Also the condition factor and length at first sexual maturity were calculated.... |

Most of the fish stocks are assessed using age-based models, however age estimations using otoliths costs several million euros annually. In this context, Automatic Fish Ageing (EU Project) would provide means to standardize ageing among laboratories and build interpreted image databases ensuring the information conservation. Automation improves growth studies while reducing the cost of the acquisition of age data. The whole processing chain from the acquisition of otolith data to the actual ageing issue using pattern recognition or statistical inference has been realised for three case studies : a) Cod (Gadus morhua ; Faeroes, North Sea, North East Arctic) b) Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus ; Bay of Biscay) c) Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, Eastern... |

In June 2015, an individual of Diretmichthys parini (Post and Quero, 1981) was trawled at 530 m depth, in the North Sea off Norway and donated to research. This capture, the first for this species in the North Sea was the northernmost recorded so far, and provided an opportunity to document some aspects of the biology and ecology of this data-poor species. This individual was a female, 331 mm total length of 33 years old, with low mercury content in muscle and liver (~ 0.2 μg g− 1 wet mass). Stable isotope ratios (C and N) in muscle and liver were consistent with the planktonic diet expected for this species. The capture of this fish at the northern latitude known so far would be consistent with the extension of the home range and the latitudinal shift... |

Somatic morphology and otolith shape were used to discriminate four samples of Atherina boyeri from three different habitats: Mellah lagoon (n = 269), Annaba Gulf (144 punctuated and 194 unpunctuated individuals) and Ziama inlet (n = 147) in eastern Algeria. For each individual, somatic morphology was described with 13 metrics and eight meristic measurements, while the otolith contour shape of 452 individuals from the three habitats was analysed using Fourier analysis. Then, two discriminant analyses, one using the 13 metric measurements and the other using Fourier descriptors, were used in order to discriminate populations of A. boyeri. The results of the discriminant analyses based on the two methods were similar, and showed that this species could be... |

Swordfish Xiphias gladius is an oceanic-pelagic species. Its population structure in the Western Indian Ocean was studied from the shape of the sagittal otoliths of 391 individuals collected from 2009 to 2014. Normalised elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFDs) were extracted automatically using TNPC software. Principal components analysis (PCA) conducted on EFDs showed no significant effect of side (i.e. left or right otolith). Consequently, all 391 sagittal otoliths were used to identify stocks among six geographical areas: Reunion Island, Mozambique Channel, Rodrigues, South Africa, Madagascar South and Sri Lanka. To investigate the effects of sex, sampling year, sampling season, lower jaw fork length or geographical area on variations in otolith shape,... |
