Organic Agriculture and the Environment Organic Eprints
Alfoeldi, Thomas; Fliessbach, Andreas; Geier, Uwe; Kilcher, Lukas; Niggli, Urs; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Willer, Helga.
Conclusion of chapter 2: "Organic Farming and the Environment" 7 Conclusion The findings of this study show that organic farming provides a wide range of environmental services. The main results may be summarised as follows: 1. Organic matter content is usually higher in organically managed soils indicating a higher fertility and stability of organic soils, thus reducing the risk of erosion. 2. Organically farmed soils have significantly higher biological activity and a higher total mass of micro-organisms. As a consequence of the higher activity of micro-organisms, in organically managed soils nutrients are recycled faster and soil structure is improved. 3. Organic farming poses no risk of ground and surface water pollution through synthetic...

Motivations for implementation of ecological compensation areas on Swiss lowland farms Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Balmer, Oliver; Jahrl, Ingrid; Stolze, Matthias; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Swiss farmers receive subsidies for reserving ecological compensation areas on their farms with the aim of encouraging biodiversity, but recent studies have found that the existing system of incentives is insufficient to halt biodiversity loss in the Swiss agricultural landscape. An effective targeting of incentives is needed to motivate farmers to implement conservation measures on farmland. The primary aim of this study is to identify the motivations that contribute to the intention of Swiss farmers to engage in conservation on their farms. Fifteen Swiss lowland farmers were interviewed using qualitative interviews and their responses to questions about their attitudes toward nature conservation were categorised and classified according to Ajzen’s (1991)...

Bericht 2006. Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Schlatter, Christian; Meindl, Peter; Kranzler, Andreas; Urban, Jiri; Malikova, Alena.

Ecological cross compliance promotes farmland biodiversity in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Aviron, Stéphanie; Nitsch, Heike; Jeanneret, Philippe; Buholzer, Serge; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Pozzi, Stefano; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Walter, Thomas; Herzog, Felix.
In ecological cross compliance, farmers have to meet environmental standards in order to qualify for area-related direct payments. Because this is a strong financial incentive, cross compliance is a potentially powerful policy instrument. We monitored the effectiveness of cross compliance in promoting biodiversity on grassland and on arable land in Switzerland over 8 years. We observed measurable benefits for flora, butterflies, ground beetles, and spiders, in terms of species numbers and/or community composition. However, populations of threatened species showed no signs of benefit. While cross compliance has been in force in Switzerland for almost a decade, it has only recently been introduced in the neighbouring European Union. We argue that – provided...

La agriculture ecológica fomenta la biodiversidad Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Balmer, Oliver.

Influence of reduced tillage on earthworm and microbial communities under organic arable farming Organic Eprints
Kuntz, Marianne; Berner, Alfred; Gattinger, Andreas; Scholberg, Johannes; Mäder, Paul; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Although reduced tillage is an agricultural practice reported to decrease soil erosion and external inputs while enhancing soil fertility it has still rarely been adopted by European organic farmers. The objective of this study was to assess the long-term interactive effects of tillage [conventional (CT) versus reduced (RT)] and fertilization [slurry (S) versus composted manure/slurry (MCS)] on earthworms and microbial communities in a clay soil under spelt in an organic 6-year crop rotation. Earthworm populations (species, density and biomass, cocoons) were investigated by handsorting the soil nine years after initial implementation of the treatments. Soil microbial carbon (Cmic) and nitrogen (Nmic) were measured by chloroform-fumigation extraction and a...

Wildtiergerechte Landnutzung im Berggebiet – Förderung der Artenvielfalt und Braunkehlchen auf Unterengadiner Bio-Modellbetrieben Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Schader, Christian; Graf, Roman; Schurch, Petra.

Blick, Theo; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Kiechle, Josef.
Spiders from ecological compensation areas in the Swiss cantons Aargau and Schaffhausen (Arachnida: Araneae) - with remarks on Phrurolithus nigrinus (Corinnidae). The dpider fauna of open habitats adjacent to arable land was investigated in northern Switzerland. The three habitat types were (1) herbaceous edges of fields (Sa), (2) fallow land sowed with flowers (BB), and (3) grass borders of fields (GS). Four funnel pitfall traps (10 cm diameter) were used to catch spiders in three stripe-types in two geographical regions in two years over 5 weeks in May and June: in total 12 sets of data. Spider species typical for open habitats were dominant, mostly lycosids (6 of 10 most active species). The results were analysed together with environmental factors...

Innovative design and management to boost functional biodiversity of organic orchards Organic Eprints

Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. Growing flowers in order to gain more natural enemies, and hence less pests is a technique called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). Ongoing research in this CORE Organic Plus project aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use FAB successfully in orchards.

Approaches to pest management in organic agriculture: a case study in European apple orchards Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Schlatter, Christian; Gabriela, Uehlinger; Daniel, Claudia.
Although the European organic agriculture movement was founded by Rudolf Steiner and Hans Mueller in the years between 1924 and 1940, it was not until the 1980s that pest management researchers began to develop strategies to control pests in organic systems. Today, insect pest management in organic agriculture involves the adoption of scientificallybased and ecologically sound strategies as specified by international and national organic production standards. These include a ban on synthetic insecticides and, more recently, on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The first phase of an insect pest management program for organic systems is the adoption of cultural practices including diverse crop rotation, enhancement of soil quality by incorporation of...

Impact of different farming systems on epigeic beneficial arthropods and earthworm fauna in arable crops Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas.

Quantifying the extent to which farmers can influence biodiversity on their farms Organic Eprints
Stöckli, Sibylle; Birrer, Simon; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith; Balmer, Oliver; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Despite the introduction of agri-environmental schemes, no general increase of farmland biodiversity in Europe has been observed. Farmers take decisions about the implementation of agri-environmental schemes at the farm scale, and it is thus highly relevant to assess the relationship between farm management and biodiversity at this scale to increase the effectiveness of agri-environmental schemes. The present study quantifies to what extent and with which practices farmers can influence biodiversity on their farm and to what extent conditions outside farmers’ control may mediate biodiversity. We grouped 27 variables into four variable sets: (1) ecological compensation (mainly semi-natural habitats), (2) in-field options (e.g. no growth regulator,...
