The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12... |

Seventeen geographical strains of Artemia , 13 bisexual and 4 parthenogenetic, were cultured through sexual maturity to select a strain which gives the best production in the St. Croix Artificial Upwelling- Mariculture System. Individual strains were compared for survival, growth, and time to sexual maturity. Dry and ash weight were determined on 100 couples (bisexual) or 200 females (parthenogenetic) from each strain. Total biomass (dry weight) production per strain has also been determined. Five strains were compared for the percent protein content of sexually mature individuals. On the basis of the results obtained, the best strains for use in the St. Croix System are the bisexual Artemia from Macau (Brazil), San... |

The first written record of the existence of the brine shrimp only dates back to 1755 (Schlosser in Kuenen and Baas-Becking, 1938). Nonetheless this "filtering animal" was already known since much longer times by different ethnic groups who attributed a better salt production in the brine pools to the presence of Artemia ; hence its popular names such as brineworm, Salztierchen, verme de sale, sóféreg, Bahar el dud, Fezzanwurm, etc. Despite the primitive optical equipment available at that time Schlosser's drawings were very detailed and rightly give the adult animal 11 pairs of thoracopods. Several other scientists, including Linnaeus (1758), later described adult Artemia with only 10 thoracopods. This controversy... |

Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) larvae were fed Brachionus cultured on Chlorella and, as soon as ingestion was possible, different types of Artemia , i.e., nauplii of the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain, Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain or GSL nauplii that had been bioencapsulated with an emulsion containing high levels of the omega3-HUFAs (highly unsaturated fatty acids) 20:5 and 22:6. San Francisco Bay Artemia with a good natural fatty acid profile and small body size could be offered earlier than the larger but HUFA-poor Great Salt Lake strain. The poor nutritional quality of the latter, however, could be corrected by enriching the nauplii with an omega3-HUFA... |

Using cyst material produced in an indoor cyst production system from 4 Artemia strains belonging to the species A. franciscana (San Francisco Bay, California, USA; Macau, Brazil; Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA) and A. parthenogenetica (Lavalduc, France), different factors were studied that affect dormancy in brine shrimp cysts. Preliminary experiments under varying (a)biotic culture conditions revealed an interaction between environmental conditions and hatching characteristics. Results obtained under better-defined conditions demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the amount of food available to the adult Artemia populations and the hatchability of their encysted... |

The brine shrimp inhabits geographically isolated biotopes with specific biotic and abiotic conditions. This has resulted in various geographical strains between which marked genetica, biological and chemical differentiation exists. The response of 13 different Artemia strains to the combined effect of temperature and salinity has been studied. Experimental temperatures tested ranged from 18 to 34°C and salinities from 5 to 120 promille. Except for Chaplin Lake (Canada) Artemia , all strains showed high survival over a wide range of salinities (35-110 promille). For all strains the common temperature optimum was between 20 and 25°C. Interaction between temperature and salinity was negligible or very limited.... |

We present evidence that incubation of brine shrimp Artemia encysted embryos (cysts) at high temperatures (36-37°C) suppresses hatching of cysts from a parthenogenetic population, while at the same time allowing cysts of the New World bisexual species (A. fransiscana) to hatch. This approach is used to verify the presence of contaminating foreign material from the New World in natural cyst populations of Old World A. parthenogenetica, A. sinica, A. urmiana and A. tunisiana. We demonstrate that high temperature incubation can be routinely applied to cysts from natural Artemia populations occurring adjacent to fish and shrimp hatcheries, to determine the extent and... |

A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval Lates calcarifer and Siganus guttatus. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In Lates demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In Siganus on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the... |

Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of Penaeus vannamei have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown Artemia which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched Artemia biomass.... |

The brine shrimp,Artemia has played a significant role in the expansion of the commercial production of shrimp and prawn during the last decade. Being an off-the-shelf and easily usable live food,Artemia is the main alternative for the natural diet of shrimp larvae. It appeared in the late 1970s that the nutritional value of Artemia, especially for marine organisms, is not constant, but varies both geographically and temporally, causing unreliable outputs in marine larviculture. Through multidisciplinary studies in Japan and by the International Study on Artemia, both the causes for nutritional variability in Artemia and methods to improve poor-quality... |

The cosmopolitan distribution of brine shrimp in coastal lagoons and island salt lakes has resulted in numerous geographical strains. In the framework of the characterization study of different Artemia strains which is the objective of the laboratories participating into the "International Study on Artemia " the following biometrical parameters have been studied by the Artemia Reference Center:- volume and diameter of hydrated, untreated and decapsulated cysts; - chorion thickness; - length, dry weight and ash free weight of freshly hatched nauplii; - volume index of freshly hatched nauplii. For all parameters, important differences were observed between the Artemia strains... |

Two Artemia species (Artemia franciscana, GSL strain and a population from Artemia sinica, ARC No. 1188) were enriched with two different emulsions containing high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (23 and 44% of total fatty acids, respectively) in filtered seawater (30 ppt) at 28°C. After enrichment nauplii were starved for 72h at three different temperatures (6.1, 12.2 and 22°C). Following enrichment the DHA content and DHA/EPA ratio reached a maximum 41.2 and 42.8 mg g-1 dry weight and 1.88 and 2.09 in A. franciscana and A. sinica, respectively. During starvation at 12.2°C the DHA content in A. franciscana... |

Although information on bivalve nutrition is still very scarce, several studies have demonstrated the importance of lipids, in particular triglycerides, as a source of energy and essential fatty acids in the early life stages. Experimental diets used so far to study bivalve nutrition either heavily pollute the water or are too complex to prepare in a hatchery. The potential use of lipid emulsions as off-the-shelf supplements was evaluated through the analytical verification of the ingestion and incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) by the juvenile sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus fed lipid emulsions of different fatty acid composition as a supplement to Isochrysis sp. (clone T-Iso). The average... |
