Organic Horticulture Expands Globally Organic Eprints
Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elizabeth; Willer, Helga.
Organic agriculture is expanding worldwide, driven by consumer demand in North American and European markets, as well as its claimed potential to address resource conservation, food security, and farm income issues in developing countries. Organic systems often build soil organic matter, sequestering carbon to help mitigate greenhouse gases (Niggli et al., 2007; Raviv, 2010). Horticultural crops, especially fruits and vegetables, are being promoted as a critical part of a healthy diet that can help avoid problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Not surprisingly, consumers interested in healthy diets are often also attracted to organic foods (Hartman Group, 2006), and thus organic horticultural crops play a prominent role in consumer...

Workshop on how to improve global data collection on organic farming Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Bouagnimbeck, Hervé.
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, Frick, and Foundation Ecology and Agriculture SOEL have been providing global organic farming statistics annually since 2000. In the framework of the survey the current number of farms and organic agricultural land is collected, and since the 2006 edition land use details have been included. It is planned to expand the data collection to other variables. The data are published annually in the yearbook ‘The World of organic Agriculture’ of which both IFOAM and FiBL are the publishers. The 2008 edition is also published by Earthscan, London, as a hardcover book. Even though in many countries the data availability has improved...

Biolandbau in Europa – Aufwärtstrend ungebrochen Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.

The current status of organic farming in the world - focus on developing countries Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Yussefi, Minou.
It is generally acknowledged that organic agriculture can contribute to socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development, especially in poorer countries. The market for organic products is growing and offers producers and exporters in the South opportunities to improve their incomes and living conditions. But what role does organic farming play in the poorer countries? Some current data are presented in this paper, based on the global survey on organic farming carried out annually by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL and the Foundation Ecology and Agriculture SOEL in co-operation with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM. Organic agriculture is developing rapidly and is now practiced in more than...

Organic continues to boom: Global market grew by double digits in 2016, the highest increase ever – 14 facts on organic agriculture worldwide Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Lernoud, Julia.
The latest data on organic agriculture worldwide (2016) indicate that exceptional growth continues. Data show a double-digit increase in 2016 for the three key indicators: farmland area, retail sales and producers. It is also notable that for the first time in recent years the organic farmland grew faster than the market. In the following article, the key data from the latest statistical yearbook, “The World of Organic Agriculture” are presented.

Organic Agriculture and the Environment Organic Eprints
Alfoeldi, Thomas; Fliessbach, Andreas; Geier, Uwe; Kilcher, Lukas; Niggli, Urs; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Willer, Helga.
Conclusion of chapter 2: "Organic Farming and the Environment" 7 Conclusion The findings of this study show that organic farming provides a wide range of environmental services. The main results may be summarised as follows: 1. Organic matter content is usually higher in organically managed soils indicating a higher fertility and stability of organic soils, thus reducing the risk of erosion. 2. Organically farmed soils have significantly higher biological activity and a higher total mass of micro-organisms. As a consequence of the higher activity of micro-organisms, in organically managed soils nutrients are recycled faster and soil structure is improved. 3. Organic farming poses no risk of ground and surface water pollution through synthetic...

Organic Farming and Market Development in Europe and the European Union Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Schaack, Diana; Lernoud, Julia.
This chapter is an update for some of the data presented in the article “Growth trends in European organic food and farming” (Willer et al. 2016) written by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the Agriculture Market Information Company (AMI), and IFOAM EU, and published by IFOAM EU and FiBL in the volume “Organic in Europe, 2016”. Therefore, the structure of this chapter is different from the other regional statistics chapters in this book. The article focuses on Europe and on the 28 member states of the European Union (EU), and it shows some trends of the EU-13 and the EU-15 countries. The EU-13 countries are those that became members of the European Union in or after May 2004. The EU-15 countries are member countries of the European...

Present Status of Organic Fruit Growing in Europe Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Häseli, Andreas; Schmid, Otto; Willer, Helga.
Organic fruit growing in Europe has experienced remarkable growth rates since the mid 1990's. Southern states, especially Italy, Spain and France have the largest land area with organic fruit, are also growing olives, citrus and chestnuts. Mainly increasing interest of supermarket chains is responsible for this buoyancy, but also the availability of better plant protection products e.g. granulosis virus and mating disruption against codling moth, and Neem oil against Rosy Apple Aphid. State subsidies varying from 600 to more than 1600 Euro /ha/y in the EU-countries (15) are less decisive for the conversion of top fruit production. Market share of organic table fruit is only 1 to 2 %, reaching 4 to 5 % in Switzerland. For Switzerland, we estimate a market...

The TP Organics Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) was finalised in December 2009. The purpose of the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) is to enable research, development and knowledge transfer that will deliver relevant outcomes – results that will contribute to the improvement of the organic sector and other low external input systems. The document has been developed through a dynamic consultative process that ran from 2008 to 2009. It involved a wide range of stakeholders who enthusiastically joined the effort to define organic research priorities. From December 2008 to February; the expert groups elaborated the first draft. The consultative process involved the active participation of many different countries. Consultation involved researchers,...
