Wind-induced leaning (toppling) in young Pinus radiata plantations in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Toral,Manuel; Bown,Horacio E; Mañon,Alejandro; Alvarez,José; Navarro-Cerrillo,Rafael.
The toppling of young trees considerably reduces the value of the first log in Pinus radiata plantations. Although wind is the main cause of toppling, the quality and type of plants, planting techniques, soil fertility and soil preparation may play an important role in the susceptibility of the species to toppling. This article analyzes the influence of ripping and soil type on the probability of P radiata toppling after severe windstorms in central south Chile. To this aim, pairs of similar trees with and without toppling were selected in 2001 in six soil types with and without soil ripping. Root system differences in toppled versus straight trees were compared to gain better insight into the causes of the phenomenon. Among all root measurements, the...

Chemical composition of corn and sorghum grains cultivated in Oxisol with different application methods and doses of zinc Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Puga,Aline P; de Mello Prado,Renato; Mattiuz,Ben-Hur; Wyllyam do Vale,Diego; Fonseca,Ivana M.
In general, tropical soils present low concentrations of zinc (Zn), and the deficiency of Zn is recognized as a world nutritional problem for cereal production and human beings. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to assess the effects of different methods of Zn application on the quality of corn and sorghum grains grown in Oxisol. Two experiments were set up in the experimental area of UNESP (campus of Jaboticabal, Brazil). The following nine treatments were applied: three doses of Zn by banded application (seed furrows), three doses of Zn by incorporation into soil (0-20 cm depth), foliar application, seed application, and control (no Zn applied). The treatments were arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates. The contents of Zn,...

Soil respiration across a disturbance gradient in sclerophyllous ecosystems in Central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Fuentes,Juan-Pablo; Perez-Quezada,Jorge F; Franck,Nicolás.
Sclerophyllous shrubs and forests are predominant in semiarid Central Chile and have a long history of degradation by fire, cultivation, firewood extraction and grazing. The aim of this study was to compare the amount and environmental drivers of soil respiration across a disturbance gradient in sclerophyllous ecosystems in the National Reserve Roblería del Cobre de Loncha in Central Chile. In a north-facing toe slope, four disturbance conditions were identified: slightly (D1) and moderately disturbed (D2) sclerophyllous forest, (D3) strongly disturbed thorn scrub and (D4) most disturbed A. caven savanna. Twelve 25×25-m plots (625 m²) were distributed equally across D1, D2, D3 and D4. Soil respiration (Rs), soil temperature (Ts), volumetric water content...

Effects of fruiting spur thinning on fruit quality and vegetative growth of sweet cherry (Prunus avium) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ayala,Marlene; Andrade,María P.
High density sweet cherry (Prunus avium) orchards using highly productive cultivars and dwarfing rootstocks usually require crop load regulation to achieve high quality fruit. Among the strategies used to reduce crop load in highly productive combinations, fruiting spur thinning (FST, spur extinction) before budbreak has been suggested to be an effective way to improve fruit size. Currently, there is little information about the effect of spur thinning on sweet cherry orchards using self-fertile cultivars grafted on vigorous rootstocks. For this reason, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of manual FST on fruit quality and vegetative growth of the cultivar 'Lapins' grafted on the rootstock 'Mazzard F-12/L with 0, 50 and 75% spur...

Inclusion of various controlled release fertilizers in moss substrates(Sphagnum magellanicum) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Oberpaur,Christel; Fernández,Carolina; Délano,Guillermo; Arévalo,M.Eugenia.
The most frequently used substrate for the production of covered root seedlings is peat, the extraction of which is under scrutiny due to its negative environmental impact; however, the use of Sphagnum moss in adequate mixtures constitutes a possible alternative. Lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L.) were sown in Polystyrene trays (240 alveoli, 24 cm³) to test four substrates, 50% Sphagnum moss mixed with 50% humus or compost and 60% Sphagnum moss with 40% humus or compost, and commercial peat was used as a control. A dose (2.5 or 3.5 gL-1) of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) was added to all substrates except for the control mix, and the substrates were subsequently irrigated with or without a fertilizer solution. The study was conducted under shaded...

Bugueño,Felipe; Livellara,Nieggiorba; Varas,Fernando; Undurraga,Pedro; Castro,Mónica; Salgado,Eduardo.
We studied the effect of four irrigation treatments, expressed as fractions (1.3, 1.0, 0.7 and 0.3) of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), on the growth of young pomegranate plants in central Chile (32°32’ S and 71°06’ W). We evaluated the effect of the four treatments on canopy volume (CV) during two growing seasons. For 28 days during the second growing season, we evaluated soil moisture content (0), the soil-moisture depletion factor (p), trunk cumulative growth (TCG), trunk growth rate (TGR) and maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDS). We found relationships between CV and TCG and between CV and TGR. There were no differences in MDS among the irrigation treatments. We observed significant water stress in plants in the 0.3 ETc treatment (p =...

Characterization of maize populations in different environmental conditions by means of Three-Mode Principal Components Analysis Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Marticorena,Marta; Bramardi,Sergio; Defacio,Raquel.
Characterization of 31 native populations of maize conserved at the germplasm bank of the PNLA Pergamino Experimental Station, Argentina, was achieved by evaluating 10 quantitative attributes in two different environmental situations. The experimental design generated three-way or three-mode data, repeated observations of a set of attributes for a set of individuals in different conditions. The information was displayed in a three-dimensional array, and the structure of the data was explored using Three-Mode Principal Component Analysis, the Tucker-2 Model. A group of populations was identified that displayed homogeneous behavior in the two environments with respect to the following traits: ear length, prolificacy, grains per meter, yield and 1000 kernel...

Different alternatives for producing sprouts of avocado (Persea americana) rootstocks Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Castro,Mónica; Fassio,Claudia; Darrouy,Nicole; Aedo,Marcela; Jorquera,Lorena.
In Chile, most avocado orchards have been planted using 'Hass' as the scion variety on seedling rootstocks. This has led to the presence of a large variety of individuals, some of which show, among other characteristics, high productivity and a low degree of biennial bearing cycle in the same growing conditions. The most common method used in other countries to propagate such rootstocks from trees involves severe topping; however, this technique is notably destructive, making it difficult to employ in commercial orchards. With the goal of developing alternate methods for forcing shoot production from the rootstock, we tested two different procedures in July 2002 and March 2003, respectively: wounding in conjunction with the application of 1.1 M or 2.2 M...

Establishing Acacia salicina under dry Mediterranean conditions: The effects of nursery fertilization and tree shelters on a mid-term experiment with saline irrigation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Oliet,Juan A; Planelles,Rosa; Artero,Francisco; Domingo-Santos,Juan M.
The restoration of dry lands in the Mediterranean is a challenging task because harsh abiotic conditions hamper the counteraction of feed-back degradation processes. Active restoration through planting must be performed to deter this process. In this study, we tested the influence of mineral nutrition in the nursery (two formulations of controlled release fertilizer at two rates each) and tree protection after planting (by using tube shelters) on the nine-year performance of Acacia salicina irrigated with low-quality (saline) water. The overall survival at the end of the study period was 58.2%, with the electrical conductivity of the soil saturation extract reaching 5.4 dSm-1 after nine years. The survival and growth (in height) were greater for seedlings...

USLE/RUSLE K-factors allocated through a linear mixed model for Uruguayan soils Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Beretta-Blanco,Andrés; Carrasco-Letelier,Leonidas.
Soil erosion by rainfall is a process that demands management, both for the prevention of excessive soil erosion and for the protection of the quality of freshwater bodies. Erosion coefficients (K-factors) of the universal soil loss equation (USLE)/revised USLE (RUSLE) model were assigned to 99 mapped Uruguayan soil types at 1:1,000,000 scale. This work developed a linear mixed model (LMM) with 79 soils with assigned K-factors, in which the following variables were considered: soil taxonomy, chemical composition, and parent material. The developed LMM had an R²=0.86, in which the soil taxonomy (p<0.0001), parent material (p=0.0174), clay (p=0.0005) and sand (p=0.017) contents had significant statistical effects. Barley Types and Varieties in Spain: Un panorama histórico Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Martínez-Moreno,Fernando; Igartua,Ernesto; Solís,Ignacio.
Barley is currently the most cultivated crop in Spain, with an acreage of about three million ha. Its importance stems from its adaptation to areas with poor soil conditions and water stress. The aim of this work is to describe the historical evolution of barley types and varieties of barley grown by farmers in Spain. A historical review was performed by consulting articles and books on the history, archaeology, and agronomy related to the issue. Different web sites and articles about the current varietal state of barley in Spain were also consulted. Another important information source was the CRF (Centro de Recursos Fitogenéticos, Spanish Center of Plant Genetic Resources) of Spain, where a large collection of landraces is preserved. The first barleys...

Chlorophyll fluorescence response of Pinus radiata clones to nitrogen and phosphorus supply Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Mason,Euan G; Clinton,Peter W; Watt,Michael S.
Chlorophyll fluorescence responses to a factorial combination of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply were measured in five clones of Pinus radiata cultivated in a greenhouse over twenty-four months. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were taken at months six (5 clones, 182 plants), nine (2 clones, 68 plants) and eighteen (2 clones, 48 plants). Plant growth in stem diameter, height, leaf area, fascicle mass, length and diameter were found to significantly increase with N and, to a lesser extent, P additions; and these values were greatest when both N and P were combined. Plant growth and fascicle size also varied significantly across clones and were generally consistent with the genotypic growth responses that were observed in the field. Dark (Fv /...

Control of Cladosporium echinulatum in carnation using bicarbonates and Trichoderma Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sandoval,Claudio; Terreros,Valeria; Schiappacasse,Flavia.
Carnations, Dianthus caryophyllus, have been cultivated in Chile for several decades as a cut flower crop. At the present time, floriculture occupies 2,124 ha, of which 180 ha are devoted to carnations. Almost all carnations produced are sold in the domestic market. Several diseases affect carnations, among them fairyring leaf spot (Cladosporium echinulatum), the most important foliar disease in Chile. Different control alternatives for fairy-ring spot were evaluated on the carnation cv. Sarinah in terms of disease incidence and severity. The study was performed in June-August 2003 with a commercial carnation planting in a greenhouse located in Champa(33° 49' S, 70° 45' W) that in previous growing seasons reported a high incidence of fairyring leaf spot....

Influence of long-chain fatty acids on weight gain of Hylastinus obscurus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Toledo,Dayand; Parra,Leonardo; Mutis,Ana; Ortega,Fernando; Hormazábal,Emilio; Quiroz,Andrés.
The contents of long-chain fatty acids in non-polar root extracts from 1.6 year-old red clover plants of two cultivars (Superqueli INIA and Quiñequeli INIA) and one experimental line (Syn II Pre III), their relationships with H. obscurus populations, and the stimulant or deterrent effects of the root extracts and of individual fatty acids on the weight gain of H. obscurus were investigated. There was an inverse relationship between the insect population size and the palmitic acid content. The Superqueli INIA cultivar contained the highest palmitic acid content and the lowest insect load. When solutions of either palmitic or oleic acids were individually incorporated into an artificial diet, palmitic acid caused a decrease in weight gain, whereas the effect...
