Partially supervised oil-slick detection by SAR imagery using kernel expansion ArchiMer
Mercier, Grégoire; Ardhuin, Fanny.
Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is well adapted to detect ocean pollution independently from daily or weather conditions. In fact, oil slicks have a specific impact on ocean wave spectra. Initial wave spectra may be characterized by three kinds of waves, namely big, medium, and small, which correspond physically to gravity and gravity-capillary waves. The increase of viscosity, due to the presence of oil damps gravity-capillary waves. This induces not only a damping of the backscattering to the sensor but also a damping of the energy of the wave spectra. Thus, local segmentation of wave spectra may be achieved by the segmentation of a multiscale decomposition of the original SAR image. In this paper, a semisupervised oil-slick detection is...

Detection of free gas and gas hydrate based on 3D seismic data and cone penetration testing: An example from the Nigerian Continental Slope ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Voisset, Michel; Marsset, Tania; Vernant, Antoine-mathieu; Cauquil, E; Colliat, J; Curinier, V.
We present a new method to characterize free gas, gas hydrates and carbonate concretions occurrence which are considered as high-risk factors for sub-sea developments in the Niger delta. This method is based on the combination of 3D seismic data to the geotechnical site characterizations using piezocone CPTU tests (Cone Penetration Test with additional measurement of the pore water pressure). A special processing of the 3D seismic data has enabled the determination of the interval compressional velocity. Using the effective-medium theory, velocity anomalies (negative and positive) within the first 15 m were translated in gas hydrate and free gas distribution. The calibration of the P wave velocity anomalies was done thanks to in-situ geotechnical testing...

Iberian Margin sea surface temperature during MIS 15 to 9 (580-300 ka): Glacial suborbital variability versus interglacial stability ArchiMer
Rodrigues, T.; Voelker, A. H. L.; Grimalt, J. O.; Abrantes, F.; Naughton, F..
Past sea surface water conditions of the western Iberian Margin were reconstructed based on biomarker analyses of a marine deep sea core MD03-2699 from the Estremadura Spur north off Lisbon, providing new insights into orbital and suborbital-scale climate variability between marine isotope stage (MIS) 15 to MIS 9 (580 to 300 ka). We use biomarker-based proxy records such as the alkenone unsaturated index to estimate sea surface temperature (SST), the total alkenone concentration to reconstruct phytoplankton productivity, and terrestrial biomarkers to evaluate the continental input. The results extend the existing biomarker record, namely the SST for the Iberian Margin, back to the sixth climatic cycle (580 ka). A general trend of stable interglacials...

Photosynthèse et nutrition carbonée chez ULVA SP ArchiMer
Piriou, Jean-yves; Duval, Valérie.
Laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to examine the grouth of ULVA SP. Results show that growth suddenly stops at a precise moment. Collectively, the results of simultaneously analysis of culture media constituents demonstrate that several components may alter the growth process of UIva sp. Based on the culture experiments, we argue that the gowth responses of UIva sp. are unaffected by pH or oxygen concentrations, but field plants of ULVA sp. are libely to be ponctually limited in growth by carbon (DIC) depletion, together with nitrogen limitation and pigments degradation.

Rôle du plancton dans le cycle biogéochimique du cadmium et du vanadium en baie de Seine orientale : premiers résultats ArchiMer
Miramand, P; Bentley, D; Guary, Jc; Brylinski, Jm.
Cd and V were analyzed in planktonic species (zooplankton and diatoms), in flocks and in total seston (suspended materials) collected at eleven stations for seven sampling periods in the eastern area of the bay of Seine. Cd concentrations measured in planktonic species of the bay of Seine are identical to those measured in other oceanic areas, but V concentrations are generally higher. In the conditions of sampling, the role of both planktonic species and flocks in the horizontal fluxes of Cd and V in the bay of Seine appears not to be important (Cd) or negligible (V) compared to non-living materials (tripton). Nevertheless, this study should be continued in periods of diatom blooms. Flocks which present high Cd and V concentration probably have an...

The RCR and ATP/O indices can give contradictory messages about mitochondrial efficiency ArchiMer
Salin, Karine; Villasevil, Eugenia M.; Anderson, Graeme J.; Selman, Colin; Chinopoulos, Christos; Metcalfe, Neil B..
Mitochondrial efficiency is typically taken to represent an animal’s capacity to convert its resources into ATP. However, the term mitochondrial efficiency, as currently used in the literature, can be calculated as either the respiratory control ratio, RCR (ratio of mitochondrial respiration supporting ATP synthesis to that required to offset the proton leak) or as the amount of ATP generated per unit of oxygen consumed, ATP/O ratio. The question of how flexibility in mitochondrial energy properties (i.e. in rates of respiration to support ATP synthesis and offset proton leak, and in the rate of ATP synthesis) affects these indices of mitochondrial efficiency has tended to be overlooked. Furthermore, little is known of whether the RCR and ATP/O ratio vary...

Characterization of biofilm extracts from two marine bacteria ArchiMer
Passerini, Delphine; Fecamp, Florian; Marchand, Laetitia; Kolypczuk, Laetitia; Bonnetot, Sandrine; Sinquin, Corinne; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Hervio Heath, Dominique; Colliec Jouault, Sylvia; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine.
In the marine environment, biofilm formation is an important lifestyle for microorganisms. A biofilm is comprised of cells embedded in an extracellular matrix that holds them close together and keeps the biofilm attached to the colonized surface. This predominant lifestyle and its main regulation pathway, namely quorum-sensing (QS), have been shown to induce specific bioactive metabolites. In this study, we investigated the biofilm formation by two marine bacteria belonging to the Vibrio species to discover potentially innovative bioactive compounds. We proposed a protocol to isolate biofilm extracts, to analyze their biochemical composition, and to compare them to planktonic cell extracts. Cells were grown attached to a plastic surface; extracts were...

Temps de renouvellement des masses d’eau des Pertuis Charentais. Note méthodologique ArchiMer
Le Moine, Olivier.
The dynamics of water renewal in semi closed ecosystems takes an essential importance in the qualitative characterization of the environment, and its impact on the exploited resource. The research of synthetic spatialized variables representing this dynamics brought to apply a method of estimation of the time of local renewal in Charentais Sounds. Various authors developed a methodology (Braunschweig, 2003). The used methodology is detailed here, with objective to document the cartographic aspects under development, to enlighten their broadcasting

Estimating Symbiont Abundances and Gill Surface Areas in Specimens of the Hydrothermal Vent Mussel Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis Maintained in Pressure Vessels ArchiMer
Duperron, Sebastien; Quiles, Adrien; Szafranski, Kamil M.; Leger, Nelly; Shillito, Bruce.
The hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis hosts gill-associated sulfur- and methane-oxidizing bacteria which sustain host nutrition and allow it to reach high densities at various sites along the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Previous studies have demonstrated that in similar dual symbioses, relative abundances of each bacterial type could change following variations in symbiont substrate availabilities. In this study, pressurized recovery and incubations in pressure vessels were used to test whether B. puteoserpentis symbionts displayed similar behavior in the presence of symbiont substrates. The relative abundances of both types of symbionts were analyzed using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and group-specific gene copy numbers...

New species of the xenophyophore genus Aschemonella (Rhizaria: Foraminifera) from areas of the abyssal eastern Pacific licensed for polymetallic nodule exploration ArchiMer
Gooday, Andrew J.; Holzmann, Maria; Caulle, Clemence; Goineau, Aurelie; Jones, Daniel Ob; Kamenskaya, Olga; Simon-lledo, Erik; Weber, Alexandra A. -t.; Pawlowski, Jan.
We describe Aschemonella monile Gooday and Holzmann sp. nov. from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ, abyssal eastern equatorial Pacific), a region characterized by commercially significant concentrations of polymetallic nodules. The new species is the most abundant xenophyophore (giant agglutinated foraminifera) in our main sampling area (12-14 degrees N; 116 degrees 30'-117 degrees 26'W). Additional specimens originate from the central CCZ, and from a third area, similar to 900 km NW of the main area, where A. monile numerically dominates the megabenthos in photographic surveys of the seafloor (average densities 1.54 individuals/m(2); peak densities > 3 individuals/m(2)). Aschemonella monile is much larger (>= 7 cm in length) than previously...

Paralytic shellfish poison accumulation yields and feeding time activity in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and king scallop (Pecten maximus) ArchiMer
Bougrier, Serge; Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele; Masselin, Pierre; Truquet, Philippe.
Pacific oysters and king scallops placed individually in a recirculating flume were fed for 2 weeks with a constant concentration (120 cell ml(-1)) of a toxic strain of Alexandrium minutum. Fluorescence at the outlet of each experimental unit was measured continuously, and biodeposits were recovered twice daily to evaluate feeding time activity (FTA) and rates of organic filtration (OFR), ingestion (OIR) and organic absorption (OAR). Ion-pairing high performance liquid chromatography (IP-HPLC) was performed concurrently to quantify paralytic phycotoxins both (i) individually in shellfish at the end of the contamination period and (ii) in A. minutum cultures to estimate cellular toxin concentration. These data allowed comparison of the actual tissue toxin...
