Assessing the Impact of the Bean/Cowpea Collaborative Research Support Program (B/C CRSP) Graduate Degree Training AgEcon
Jamora, Nelissa; Bernsten, Richard H.; Maredia, Mywish K..
The study evaluated the impacts of the graduate degree training (GDT) component of the B/C CRSP. In their enhanced capacity, trainees have been playing important roles in strengthening teaching and research capacity in bean and cowpea sectors, both in the U.S. and in host countries. The study recommends the continued commitment and increased financial support to GDT.

CONSUMER PREFERENCES AS DRIVERS OF THE COMMON BEAN TRADE IN TANZANIA: A MARKETING PERSPECTIVE AgEcon
Mishili, Fulgence J.; Temu, Anna A.; Fulton, Joan R.; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
The objective of this study was to determine the impact of bean grain quality characteristics on market price. The data was collected from retail markets in Tanzania. Hedonic pricing provides a statistical estimate of premiums and discounts. Implications for development of bean markets include: i) extension agents should identify cost-effective ways to educate producers on targeting urban market niches based on consumer preferences for varieties, ii) breeding for bruchid resistant beans and use of appropriate storage technologies would alleviate the problems of storage damage, and iii) requiring a portfolio of grain quality characteristics to fit consumer preferences in local markets.

A importância do setor varejista na comercialização de feijão no Paraná AgEcon
Carneiro, Paula Tissiany; Parre, Jose Luiz.
Based in concepts and models of “commercialization”, this work has as objective to analyze the transmissions of prices between producer, attacked and retail of the productive chain of the beans in the state of the Paraná, in the period of 1995/ 2003. For this, it was verified as the variable price was transmitted between the segments, esteem itself the edges and the causality direction enters the three sectors of market, that, together with the improvement of the final product, serve as indicating of efficiency in the distribution and commercialization of the product. In general way, the retail caused variations in the prices to the producer and attacked - causality confirmed for the application of model VAR - but that it did not represent an explosive...

Impacts of U.S. Graduate Degree Training on Capacity Building in Developing Countries: A Case Study of the Pulse CRSP AgEcon
Jamora, Nelissa; Bernsten, Richard H.; Maredia, Mywish K..
The Dry Grain Pulses Collaborative Research Support Program (Pulse CRSP) had allocated a major part of its resources to providing graduate degree training (GDT) of scientists/researchers in order to strengthen agricultural research capacity in Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. However, no systematic attempt had been made to assess the impact of this investment. The study adopted the Kirkpatrick framework as a guide for evaluating the impacts of GDT by the Pulse CRSP. The results were drawn from a survey of former trainees and researchers, supplemented by interviews with scientists and program administrators and an institutional case study. An important finding was that over 86% of host country trainees returned to their home country. In their enhanced...

Toxigenic fungi in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) classes black and color cultivated in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil BJM
Costa,Léa Luzia Freitas; Scussel,Vildes Maria.
Toxigenic fungi were studied in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) of Classes black and color, cultivated in different regions of the State of Santa Catarina, south region of Brazil. The mean counts of filamentous fungi were 2.8 x 103 and 6.7 x 103 CFU/g for beans Classes black and color, respectively. Penicillium spp., Aspergillus spp. and Phoma spp. were the most frequent genera isolated, followed by Ryzopus spp., Alternaria spp., Helminthosporium spp., Cladosporium spp., Botrytis spp., Fusarium spp., Trichoderma spp., Curvularia spp. and Dreschelera spp. Among beans Class black, 24.6% of the Aspergillus strains produced mycotoxins: 13.1% produced aflatoxins (AFs); 11.5% produced ochratoxin A (OTA) and 28.9% of Penicillium produced citrinin (CTR). On the...
