Mit autonomen Landmaschinen zu neuen Pflanzenbausystemen Organic Eprints
Gaus, Cord-Christian; Minßen, Till-Fabian; Urso, Lisa-Marie; de Witte, Thomas; Wegener, Jens.

Labour and machinery analysis in organic farming Organic Eprints
Sørensen, C.G.; Nielsen, V..
Organic farming is generally considered to require more labour than conventional farming, as the assumption is that chemical inputs are substituted by factors like new knowledge, practices and labour. However, the overall effect on labour and machinery usage when carrying out a transition from conventional to organic farming depends in a complex way of the type of production, different farm-specific factors, etc. In order to investigate the labour usage in organic farming as compared with conventional farming an integrated approach involving labour budgeting, labour profiles, labour quality, etc. has to be applied.

Beef Cattle Farms’ Conversion to the Organic System. Recommendations for Success in the Face of Future Changes in a Global Context Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J..
Abstract: Dehesa is a remarkable agroforestry system, which needs the implementation of sustainable production systems in order to reduce its deterioration. Moreover, its livestock farms need to adapt to a new global market context. As a response, the organic livestock sector has expanded not only globally but also in the region in search for increased overall sustainability. However, conversions to the organic system have been commonly carried out without analyzing farms’ feasibility to do so. This analysis is necessary before implementing any new production system in order to reduce both the diversity of externalities that the variety of contexts leads to and the vulnerability of the Dehesa ecosystem to small management changes. Within this context and...

Hortibot: Feasibility study of a plant nursing robot performing weeding operations – part IV Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Claus G.; Nørremark, Michael; Jørgensen, Rasmus N.; Jensen, Kjeld; Maagaard, Jørgen; Jensen, Lars Aa..
Based on the development of a robotic tool carrier (Hortibot) equipped with weeding tools, a feasibility study was carried out to evaluate the viability of this innovative technology. The feasibility was demonstrated through a targeted evaluation adapted to the obtainable knowledge on the system performance in horticulture. A usage scenario was designed to set the implementation of the robotic system in a row crop of seeded bulb onions considering operational and functional constraints in organic crop, production. This usage scenario together with the technical specifications of the implemented system provided the basis for the feasibility analysis, including a comparison with a conventional weeding system. Preliminary results show that the automation...

Hefner, M.; Nørremark, Michael; Kristensen, Hanne L..
Problems of machinery induced soil compaction are evident in organic vegetable production, resulting in stunted root growth and reduced yield. Controlled traffic farming (CTF) provides a possibility to restrict soil compaction to wheel tracks and create traffic-free vegetable beds with improved soil structure. A field experiment was established at a commercial organic vegetable farm in Denmark to investigate the effect of CTF on the growth of cabbage (Brassica oleracea), potato (Solanum tuberosum) and beetroot (Beta vulgaris). Random traffic farming (RTF) served as the control. Preliminary results show that root intensity was higher in the CTF treatment compared to the RTF treatment for cabbage at the end of the growing season, indicating a better soil...

Nitrogen and Energy Utilization on Conventional and Organic Dairy Farms in Norway Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias.
To improve environmental sustainability it is important that all sectors in a society contribute to improving the utilization of inputs as energy and nutrients. In Norway, dairy farming contributes with an important share to the added value from the agricultural sector, although there is little information available about utilization of energy and nitrogen (N). Many results on sustainability have been published on dairy farming. However, due to Norway’s Nordic climatic conditions, mountainous and rugged topography and an agricultural policy that can design its own prices and subsidies, results from other countries are hardly representative for Norwegian conditions. To bridge this gap, the objective of this study was to analyse if the utilisation of...

Non-inversion tillage in organic arable cropping Organic Eprints
Trump, Andrew.
The opportunities for using an non-inversion tillage (NI) approach in organic systems has not been well investigated by research and what research has been done has not perhaps been sufficiently long-term. The benefits of the system in terms of the economics of establishment and the improvement in soil quality make the system attractive, but it is a system that will take some time to get established and is one that will require the farmer to “hold his nerve” as grass weed, perennial weed burdens and slug predation may increase in the early years of implementation. In conventional systems and the POB work yields have reported to drop when implementing an NI system. This is before some of the benefits of a better quality soil are seen, but in the work done...
