Revisiting the palm oil boom: An examination of consumption in the oils complex AgEcon
Sanders, Daniel J.; Balagtas, Joseph Valdes; Gruere, Guillaume P..
The production, trade, and market share of palm oil has shown impressive growth in the last two decades. As a result of sustainability concerns over issues such as deforestation in Indonesia, the causes of the growth in the palm oil market have received considerable attention. The growth of the biofuels market is one potential culprit that has been notably discussed, but it is not the only possible driver of growth in the palm oil market. Restrictions on genetically-modified organisms may have played a role, especially as they relate to limits on oil produced from GMO soybeans. Additionally, increasing concerns over health issues such as trans-fats may have spurred substitution to the low trans-fats palm oil. This analysis details some of the changes...

Determinants of change in house-hold level of consumption and poverty in Uganda, 1992/93 - 1999/00 AgEcon
Benin, Samuel; Mugarura, Samuel.
Recent estimates showing increase in the incidence of poverty in Uganda has kindled interest in understanding the factors that cause changes in poverty, as the reversal of the positive trend in the 1990s threatens the government’s poverty eradication plan of reducing poverty to a level below 28% by 2014. Using a household and community panel dataset, this paper analyzes the factors contributing to change in household-level consumption and poverty.

Kihívás: a fenntarthatóság megvalósítása vidéken AgEcon
Csete, Laszlo.
A folyamatosságra, vagy másképpen a fenntarthatóságra irányuló emberi magatartás kívánalma bibliai múltra tekint vissza, s az is jól ismert, hogy a természeti erőforrásokat hasznosító mező-erdőgazdasági tevékenységekben, a józan gazdálkodó mindennapjaiban ezek „újratermelése” a gazdálkodás szerves részét képezi, de a folyamatosság, az előrelátás, a beosztás jellemzi a családi élet mindennapjait is. Ennek ellenére – néhány évtizeddel ezelőtt – az emberiség jövőjéért aggódó szakemberek szűk csoportja a fenntartható fejlődést megoldandó tennivalóként tárta a világ elé a természeti környezet, az élővilág gyorsuló pusztulása, a természeti erőforrások mértéktelen kizsarolása miatt. MILK AND MILK PROCESSING INDUSTRY IN LITHUANIA: AN ANALYSIS OF HORIZONZAL AND VERTICAL INTEGRATION AgEcon
Kedaitiene, Angele; Hockmann, Heinrich.
Despite significant progress in recent years, horizontal and vertical integration of the Lithuanian milk sector is not very much advanced. The primary sector is characterised by small-scale farming, the fragmentation of farmland and a low number of livestock per farms. These features cause severe problems regarding the restructuring and modernisation of agricultural production since only a few farmers possess the capital resources to conduct necessary investments. However, despite the unfavourable conditions Lithuanian milk producers have made significant improvements concerning milk quality. In the last decade, the processing sector was due to drastic concentration processes. These were induced by the strong competition processes on the milk market and...

Income Stabilization Through Government Payments: How Is Farm Household Consumption Affected? AgEcon
Whitaker, James B.; Effland, Anne.
We estimate the impacts of various types of government payments to U.S. agriculture on different components of farm household consumption. Using 2003 to 2005 data from the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), we show that marginal rates of consumption differ by consumption category and income source, including different types of farm program payments. The results suggest that farm households treat income from different sources as imperfect substitutes and may reserve income from specific sources for specific types of consumption. Implications for the effects of different types of government payments on the farm household are considered.

2001 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD WHEAT INDUSTRIES, 2000-2010 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2000-2010 period by using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to be improving for the next ten years. World demands for both common and durum wheat are expected to grow faster than world production of the two wheat classes, resulting in gradual increases in prices of the wheats, which are predicted to increase 5.3% for durum wheat and 1.1% for common wheat for the 2000-2010 period. World trade volumes of both classes of wheat are expected to expand, but trade volume of durum wheat...

Drivers of consumer’s adoption of innovative food AgEcon
Loizou, Efstratios; Michailidis, Anastasios; Tzimitra-Kalogianni, Irene.
Over the last years, food safety, health and environmental issues are a few among many other reasons that force consumers to adopt new innovative food products – organic, private label, genetically modified and functional – as part of their consumption. This spectacular shift of the consumption forwards “innovative” food products attracts the interest of the analyst as it can shed new light on consumer’s behaviour and on modeling and understanding better his long-term behaviour. Thus, this study attempts to investigate the factors that influence consumer’s decision in purchasing either traditional or new innovative products and to what extend this shift between those two groups of products is related to pre-defined elements. This is achieved by employing...

2009 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2008-2018 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2008-2018 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years in spite of the 2007-08 surge in world oil prices. That increase in price caused an increase in the conversion of sugar into ethanol in Brazil, while other exporting countries increased their production in response to those higher prices. Sugar prices returned to normal levels in 2008. World demand for sugar is expected to grow at a similar rate to world supply, resulting in Carribean...

Analyzing Households’ Fruit Juice Consumption and Purchasing Tendency: A Case Study From Isparta AgEcon
Gul, Mevlut; Akpinar, Goksel; Dagistan, Erdal; Yilmaz, Hilal; Gulcan, Sinem.
The investments of fruit juice industry had been begun in 1969 in Turkey and accelerated since 1983 in modern sense. 37 fruit juice firms are officially registered as trademark. The fruit juice consumption per head was increased in the beginning of 1970s by about 13 fold augmentation, however, this value is still considerably lower than the developed countries. Relatively high fresh fruit consumption is caused lower fruit juice consumption in Turkey. However, an increasing in the domestic demand of fruit juice is observed by the years. This study was carried out to determine the fruit juice consumption and the expenditure of the families in Isparta Province. Thus, this investigation was conducted in the centre of Isparta. In this means, purchasing...

Migrant Labor Markets and the Welfare of Rural Households in the Developing World: Evidence from China AgEcon
de Brauw, Alan; Giles, John.
In this paper, we examine the impact of reductions in barriers to migration on the consumption of rural households in China. We find that increased migration from rural villages leads to significant increases in consumption per capita, and that this effect is stronger for poorer households within villages. Household income per capita and non-durable consumption per capita both increase with out-migration, and increase more for poorer households. We also establish a causal relationship between increased out-migration and investment in housing and durable goods assets, and these effects are also stronger for poorer households. We do not find robust evidence, however, to support a connection between increased migration and investment in productive activity....

Consumption and Precautionary Saving: An Empirical Analysis under Both Financial and Environmental Risks AgEcon
Baiardi, Donatella; Manera, Matteo; Menegatti, Mario.
This paper studies the empirical relationship between consumption and saving under two different sources of uncertainty: financial risk and environmental risk. The analysis is carried out using time series data for six advanced economies in the period 1965-2007. The results support the theoretical conclusions that both financial risk alone and the interaction between financial and environmental risks affect consumption. Moreover, we suggest a solution to some shortcomings which concern the empirical analysis performed with one-argument utility functions. Finally, we provide new estimates of indexes of relative risk aversion and relative prudence, and relative preference of environmental quality.

The impact of smallholder commercialisation of organic crops on food consumption patterns, dietary diversity and consumption elasticities AgEcon
Hendriks, Sheryl L.; Msaki, Mark M..
The impact of smallholder commercialisation on food consumption patterns in a rural community of South Africa was investigated. The dietary diversity, nutrient intakes and consumption patterns of certified, partially certified and non-members of an organic farmers’ organisation were compared. Engagement in certified commercial organic farming promoted comparatively greater dietary diversity and improved nutrient intakes. While smallholder agriculture commercialisation has the potential to improve food consumption patterns and food quality through increased income and labour opportunities, caution should be exercised before claiming that such commercialisation can alleviate food insecurity and solve hunger in rural South Africa.

Declining Orange Consumption in Japan: Generational Changes or Something Else? AgEcon
Mori, Hiroshi; Clason, Dennis L.; Ishibashi, Kimiko; Gorman, William D.; Dyck, John H..
Japan is a leading market for U.S. oranges. Since 1995, orange consumption in Japan has declined. This report summarizes an analysis of household survey data to assess various factors that may be related to the decline. Consumption of oranges in Japan differs markedly across generations, with younger generations (cohorts) eating fewer oranges than older generations. However, within generations, as individuals in Japan grow older, they eat more oranges. On balance, the effects on consumption associated with aging and birth cohort membership are mostly offsetting. Orange prices affect consumption levels, but household income does not. Even after the analysis accounts for price and demographic variables, a strong downward trend is evident in orange...
