In this study the authors aimed to compare the efficiency of carprofen, ketoprofen and vedaprofen for alleviating postoperative pain in bitches submitted to ovariohysterectomy (OH). Pre- and postoperative assessment of pain was made using serum levels of cortisol and glucose, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the University of Melbourne pain scale (UMPS) in twenty-one bitches undergoing OH. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of three groups: vedaprofen at 0.5mg kg-1, carprofen at 2.2mg kg-1 or ketoprofen at 2.2mg kg-1. All analgesics were given orally 2 hour before surgery. Assessments were made before surgery and at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 and 24 hours post-extubation. No dog of this study required additional doses of analgesics. There were no... |

ABSTRACT: Throughout pregnancy, maternal hemodynamic adaptation is needed to ensure proper uterine perfusion and fetal development. When the uteroplacental vascular system is formed, starting with reduced resistance to uterine arterial flow, this results in decreased total vascular resistance, an activation of neuroendocrine vasoactive peptides, an increase in circulating blood and changes in the cardiovascular system morphophysiology to respond to the increasing demands of uterine perfusion. There has been considerable study of hemodynamic adaptation in pregnant women and this assessment has become a diagnostic tool for fatal obstetric disorders. However, in bitches the available information in this regard is limited; therefore a parallel was drawn... |

Methyl methacrylate, acrylic resine for odontologic use, was used to fill the orbital cavity of three dogs which presented retrobulbar, eyeball and eyelid neoplasias extended to the orbital space, respectively. The material was moulded in the orbit before polymerization, while still in its paste phase. In each case, follow-up reports were obtained in the 10th and 40th days and in 18 months after surgery. Complications were not observed and improvement of cosmetic appearance was obtained. |

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic disease caused by Leishmania infantum. The major sites of parasite localization in infected animals are the secondary lymphoid organs, bone marrow and cutaneous tissue. However, reports exist on the detection of the parasite in the organs of the male and female genital system. The main route of transmission is related to the hematophagous sandfly vectors of the genus Lutzomyia(New World) and Phlebotomus(Old World). However, other routes of transmission may be mentioned, such as sexual, vertical, hematogenic without vector and others involved in VL epidemiology. Thus, the current article reviews the main forms of transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in mammals |

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to prepare orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) of mosapride citrate for dogs with fast disintegration and low cost. The ODTs were developed by varying the components and the ratio of excipients. A direct compression method was used. The properties of the ODTs, including hardness, friability, active ingredient content, and in vitro disintegration time, were investigated, and an economic analysis of the formulations was performed. For all formulations, friability was less than 1%, and the hardness varied from 37.69±4.08 to 48.73±5.62 N, which indicated that the tablets had sufficient mechanical integrity to withstand packaging and carrying. Results showed that Formulation (F) 2, containing 5% sodium carboxymethyl... |

Prostaglandin F2? can be used in dogs to increase ejaculate volume in cases of artificial insemination, semen cryopreservation or reproductive biotechnologies. Side effects after administration of PGF2? in dogs as tachycardia, tachypnea, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea and seizures are usually dose- dependent. This paper reports the occurrence of acute toxic hepatitis after the application of PGF2? in a dog, and discusses the importance of using this drug with caution in dogs. |

Efficacy of meloxicam, administered by different routes was studied in experimental uveitis in dogs. Anterior chamber paracenteses was accomplished at two different moments (M0 and M1), with a five hour interval among them. At M0 and M1, 0.2mL of aqueous humor was collected and total protein and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) quantitation was determined. Four groups were formed (n=5), which received meloxicam at the end of M0. by the following routes: subcutaneous (GIm), subconjunctival (GII), and topical (GIII). A fourth group that received no treatment was instituted (Control). Conjunctival histopathology of the GII was performed. Results were evaluated statistically (P≤0.05). In all groups, protein and PGE2 values enhanced significantly in M1. Protein and PGE2... |

The present work describes the detection of infected cells in the bone marrow aspirates of dogs experimentally infected with a Brazilian isolate of Ehrlichia canis. Dogs were monitored twice a day by clinical evaluation and peripheral blood smear examination. Every three days, blood samples were collected for cell counts. Weekly, aspirates from the bone marrow were examined and serum samples were tested by IFAT. The clinical signs observed were fever, pallid membranes, lymphadenopathy, serous nasal secretions, and pronounced weight loss. Hematological alterations included normocytic normochromic anemia, decrease of neutrophils and lymphocytes, and thrombocytopenia. Few E. canis infected cells were seen in blood smears. However, stages of E. canis were... |
