Harvesting strategy and N fertilization influence 134 Cs uptake by forage plants Organic Eprints
Paasikallio, Arja; Sormunen-Cristian, Riitta.
The root uptake of 134 Cs by forage plants was studied as a function of growth stage and N fertilization with biotite supplementation. The study was conducted by means of pot experiments with peat soil. In the growth stage studies, ryegrass, white clover and yellow-flowered lucerne were cut once 30,60 or 90 days after sowing or three times at intervals of 30 days.In the one-cut system, at 90 d,the activity concentration of 134 Cs in ryegrass and clover was higher and that in lucerne lower than in the three-cut system. In both treatments, the activity concentration in ryegrass decreased and that in legumes, generally, tended to increase with time.In the N fertilization studies, ryegrass was grown at different levels of ammonium nitrate (100,200 and 400 mg N l -1...

Farm Resilience in Organic and Nonorganic Cocoa Farming Systems in Alto Beni, Bolivia Organic Eprints
Jacobi, Johanna; Schneider, Monika; Pillco Mariscal, María; Huber, Stephanie; Weidmann, Simon; Bottazzi, Patrick; Rist, Stephan.
Cocoa production in Alto Beni, Bolivia, is a major source of income and is severely affected by climate change impacts and other stress factors. Resilient farming systems are, thus, important for local families. This study compares indicators for social–ecological resilience in 30 organic and 22 nonorganic cocoa farms of Alto Beni. Organic farms had a higher tree and crop diversity, higher yields and incomes, more social connectedness, and participated in more courses on cocoa cultivation. Resilience was enhanced by local farmers’ organizations, providing organic certification and supporting diversified agroforestry with seedlings and extension, going beyond basic organic certification requirements.

Identification of key factors for reducing N and P leaching from organic crop rotations Organic Eprints
Neumann, Angelika; Torstensson, Gunnar; Aronsson, Helena.
Leaching of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) for different 6-year organic crop rotations was examined in separately tile-drained field plots on two different sites in southwest Sweden. On each site, two different farming systems, one with dairy cows and one without stock, were evaluated to identify parts of the crop rotations with the greatest risks of N and P leaching and to examine the scope for improvement. Although organic farming methods themselves already led to a reduction in nutrient leaching, critical periods in the crop rotation could nevertheless be identified for the two soil types. While P leaching is of major importance on clay soils, sandy soils are strongly susceptible to N leaching. From the present study it could be concluded, that key...

Home range and dispersal of the field vole Microtus agrestis in an organic agro-ecosystem Organic Eprints
Jensen, Thomas Secher; Olsen, Kent; Hansen, Tine Sussi; Vedel-Smith, Christina.
During 2008-2011 field voles (Microtus agrestis) were studied in a Danish agro-ecosystem in connection with a programme elucidating the role of organic farming as refuge for biodiversity, due to the observed biodiversity losses in conventional farmland. The aim of the study was to quantify home ranges and movements of voles in order to test a hypothesis that vole populations living in organic farm could colonize unoccupied areas in conventional farms. Voles were radiocollared and tracked until death or disappearance. Results showed that vole home-ranges were larger during onset of the breeding season than during the height of the breeding season and the non-breeding period. Males had larger home ranges than females. Voles occupying isolated small...

Reduced tillage: Influence on erosion and nutrient losses in a clayey field in southern Finland Organic Eprints
Koskiaho, Jari; Kivisaari, Simo; Vermeulen, Stephan; Kauppila, Raimo; Kallio, Kari; Puustinen, Markku.
Reduced tillage was compared with traditional ploughing in terms of erosion and phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) losses in an experimental field in southern Finland. One part of the field has been ploughed (treatment PF) and the other part harrowed (treatment NPF) every autumn since 1986. Flow volume and water quality data was collected separately from surface runoff and subsurface drainage waters during 1991-1995 (surface runoff volume since 1993). Erosion was higher in PF (on average 234 kg ha-1yr-1 in drainage flow and 479 kg ha-1 yr-1 in surface runoff) than in NPF (158 kg ha-1yr-1 in drainage flow and 160 kg ha-1yr-1 in surface runoff). Total N loss in drainage flow was also higher in PF (7.2 kg ha-1yr-1) than in NPF (4.6 kg ha-1yr-1). Total P losses...

Deliverable 1.3.(b): Conference paper: German consumers’ evaluation of imported organic food products – the importance of geographical distance Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Susanne; Aschemann-Witzel, Jessica; Thøgersen, John.
In Germany, as in several other European countries, the demand for organic food is growing substantially faster than domestic production and supply, which has led to high import shares of many organic foods. Consequently, domestic consumers are presented with a wide variety of organic products from foreign country-of-origins (COOs). Although there are many studies of consumer preferences for COO on the one hand and organic food on the other, research on COO effects in the context of organic food is scarce. More specifically, there is a lack of research on how consumers evaluate imported organic food products. To explore regional differences in German consumers’ preferences for imported organic foods, 6 focus groups and 255 in-store interviews were...

Environmental impact of grazed grass/clover patures Organic Eprints
Ledgard, S.; Schils, R.; Eriksen, J.; Luo, J..
Grazed clover/grass pastures are important for animal production systems and the clover component is critical for its contribution to nitrogen (N) inputs via biological fixation of atmospheric N2. The resource efficiency and environmental emissions for clover/grass pastures can differ from that of N-fertilised grass-only pastures. Clover N2 fixation uses photosynthetically-fixed carbon, whereas N fertiliser production consumes fossil fuels and has net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Clover has a higher phosphorus (P) requirement than grass and where extra P fertiliser is used for clover/grass pastures the risk of P loss to waterways is greater than for grass-only pastures. Nitrogen leaching from grazed pasture increases exponentially with increased N...

Comparative Sustainability Assessment of Extensive Beef Cattle Farms Organic Eprints
Escribano, AJ; Gaspar , P; Mesias, FJ; Escribano, M; Pulido, F.
This chapter analyzes the sustainability of beef cattle systems of the Spanish Rangelands known as “Dehesas”. These are traditional systems of the Iberian Peninsula where native herbaceous vegetation and evergreen species of Quercus provide the basis for extensive livestock farms. These systems are considered as outstanding High Nature Value (HNV) farming systems and the most extensive agroforestry systems in Europe according to CORINE Land Cover. Beef farms in this area show low stocking rates and a small dependence on foodstuff purchases. However, certain changes have occurred in the last decadesdue to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). On the one hand, some farms have become more intensified, as a way to maximize the revenues from the CAP subsidies....

Is organic farming inefficient, or are indicators of economic performance of agriculture incomplete? Organic Eprints
Huhtala, Anni.
Organic farming is expected to alleviate the environmental burden of agriculture, since it rules out the use of chemicals such as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides. However, organic farming technology may turn out to be less efficient when evaluated by conventional productivity measures that are less informative regarding environmental efficiency. We derive a framework for a combination of more comprehensive indicators reflecting whether organic farming increases sustainability in agriculture and how much of the total agricultural value added is produced at the expense of environmental deterioration. We show that it is important to separate flow and stock effects of pollution so that aggregate measurement is consistent with conventional...

How does consumer behaviour change? Examples from energy conservation Organic Eprints
Heiskanen, Eva; Johnson, Mikael; Saastamoinen, Mika; Vadovics, Edina.
A global consumer society is rapidly overshooting ecological limits, there is a dire need to find new ways to change consumer behaviour. Yet history knows few succesful examples of reducing consumption. However, since the 1970s, there is a long legacy of work on energy conservation, which we use to identify three key factors that influence consumer behaviour: consumer awareness, contextual factors and community. Drawing on evidence from a European research project called CHANGING BEHAVIOUR, we discuss where previous efforts to change energy behaviour have succeeded in making a difference. We highlight ways in which sociotechnical systems shaping consumption can be changed and emerging ways in which consumers can join forces to achieve greater power and...

Microbially-mediated P fluxes in calcareous soils as a function of water-extractable phosphate Organic Eprints
Schneider, Kimberly D.; Voroney, R. Paul; Lynch, Derek H.; Oberson, Astrid; Frossard, Emmanuel; Bünemann, Else K..
Soil phosphorus (P) tests are designed to indicate plant-available inorganic orthophosphate (Pi), but fail to account for Pi that may become available through organic phosphorus (Po) mineralization. This P source may be especially important in soils with low concentrations of solution and labile Pi. We assessed gross Po mineralization and immobilization using labeling with 33P in four calcareous Alfisols with varying concentrations of Olsen soil test P that were collected from forage fields of dairy farms in Ontario, Canada. Rapid microbial 33P uptake during incubation was found for the soils with the lowest available Pi as indicated by both Olsen soil test P and water-extractable Pi. The tracer incorporation into microbial P after 8 days ranged from 7 to...
