This second volume of a guide to integrated coastal zone management opens a new dimension by discussing the processes involved in a more complete and dynamic way than the first, To fulfil1 this requirement, an expanded work group, drawing upon the knowledge of experts in political science, economics, and sociology, devoted over two years of effort (1999 - 2001) to its completion, following a disciplined working method. A dual principle prevailed in the application of this method. On one hand, it prescribed an approach structured as a series of steps, and on the other, it demanded that real situations be brought to light, emphasizing case studies of experience with or analysis of coastal management. |

The spatial and temporal changes of the fish assemblage areas composition at the coastal ecosystem of the western South Atlantic (34 degree -41 degree S) during six springs (1981, 1983, 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999), were examined. For each assemblage area the most common species and those species that discriminate it from adjacent assemblages areas within years, were identified. Within each area, also resident (common in all years) and facultative (contributing to less than 90% of similarity within any year) species, were studied. Also were identified what parameters control the main structuring of the fish community on the spatial and temporal patterns. In order to determine how the environmental factors influenced the fish community structure, the... |

The paper presents preliminary data collected in an assessment of the social, economic and environmental impacts of water hyacinth in the Lake Victoria Basin. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The report draws on field observations made, studies through interviews of affected communities and organisations, personal communications and published reports by scientists in the region. Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater body, supports an estimated 25 million people living in the Basin, with an estimated gross economic product of US$3–4 billion annually, mainly from subsistence agriculture and fishing in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and parts of Rwanda and Burundi. The multiple activities in the Lake Victoria... |

Soil is an important compartment of carbon in terrestrial ecosystem, retaining substantial quantity of this element in organic forms, mainly in forest areas. The understanding of the factors that affect the fluxes of soil CO2 is the basic to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The objective of this work was to evaluate the patterns of spatial variability of soil CO2 flux in native forest in a very clayey dystroferric Red Latosol (Oxisol), in Lavras city, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. A grid of 32 points was delimited, regularly spaced in 5 m distance, in which the CO2 flux and environmental factors (water evaporation, temperature and soil moisture) and attributes related to fertility (pH, base soil saturation and exchangeable... |
