First study in cryopreserved Crassostrea angulata sperm 5
Riesco, Marta F.; Felix, Francisca; Matias, Domitilia; Joaquim, Sandra; Suquet, Marc; Cabrita, Elsa.
Sperm cryopreservation is a widely employed technique that promotes alternative techniques to contribute to broodstock management or restoration programs for species of commercial interest, endangered species or species with an interesting genotype. The preservation of genetic material from improved stocks or from the original population is extremely important for the oyster aquaculture industry to prevent the potential impacts of epidemic diseases and natural disasters. The Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, was the most important species commercialized by the shellfish industry. However, inadequate management of this industry and pathology occurrences resulted in a significant decrease in natural populations. For this reason, in this work a...

Disentangling Drought and Nutrient Effects on Soil Carbon Dioxide and Methane Fluxes in a Tropical Forest 5
Bréchet, Laëtitia; Courtois, Elodie A.; Saint-germain, Thomas; Janssens, Ivan A.; Asensio, Dolores; Ramirez-rojas, Irene; Soong, Jennifer L.; Van Langenhove, Leandro; Verbruggen, Erik; Stahl, Clément.
Tropical soils are a major contributor to the balance of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in the atmosphere. Models of tropical GHG fluxes predict that both the frequency of drought events and changes in atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) will significantly affect dynamics of soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) production and consumption. In this study, we examined the combined effect of a reduction in precipitation and an increase in nutrient availability on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes in a primary French Guiana tropical forest. Drought conditions were simulated by intercepting precipitation falling through the forest canopy with tarpaulin roofs. Nutrient availability was manipulated through application of granular N and/or phosphorus (P) fertilizer to...

Preliminary study on hatching of rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and copepods (Cyclopoida): response to flooding and organic fertilisation 20
Mwandya, A.W.; Kyewalyanga, M.S.; Valdenberg, A..
The effect of water flooding, organic fertiliser application and salinity manipulation in stimulating the hatching of rotifer resting eggs was investigated during the dry season (in August/September 1999) in simulation tanks and earthen ponds at Makoba, Zanzibar. The majority of hatched zooplankton included rotifers, identified as Brachionus plicatilis, and other zooplankton such as copepods and protozoa were present in small numbers. The number of rotifers hatched in simulation treatments with low salinity was higher than the values in treatments containing undiluted seawater. Up to 22 ± 1.5 (mean ± SE) rotifers/ml were counted in treatments with low salinity, whereas only a maximum of 13 ± 1. rotifers/ml were found in high-salinity treatments. On the...

Neste...

Use of diammonium phosphate on wheat grown in southwestern Buenos Aires (Argentina) 85
Ron,MM; Loewy,T.
In the southwest of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies are important wheat yield limiting factors. There is an information gap regarding differences between single element and binary N-P sources. The objective of this paper was to develop a general model for N-P fertilization in the area that also quantified diammonium phosphate (DAP) effect and its interactions with N-urea, applied at sowing or tillering, as compared with triple superphosphate (TSP). Between 1984 and 1985, 13 experiments were carried out in farmer’s fields N. With the yield data for each experiment, a yield function was fitted which included terms for single effects of urea (0, 30 and 60 kg N/ha) and 80 kg/ha of either DAP or TSP....

Silicate fertilization of tropical soils: silicon availability and recovery index of sugarcane 90
Camargo,Mônica Sartori de; Rocha,Gabriela; Korndörfer,Gaspar Henrique.
Sugarcane is considered a Si-accumulating plant, but in Brazil, where several soil types are used for cultivation, there is little information about silicon (Si) fertilization. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the silicon availability, uptake and recovery index of Si from the applied silicate on tropical soils with and without silicate fertilization, in three crops. The experiments in pots (100 L) were performed with specific Si rates (0, 185, 370 and 555 kg ha-1 Si), three soils (Quartzipsamment-Q, 6 % clay; Rhodic Hapludox-RH, 22 % clay; and Rhodic Acrudox-RA, 68 % clay), with four replications. The silicon source was Ca-Mg silicate. The same Ca and Mg quantities were applied to all pots, with lime and/or MgCl2, when necessary. Sugarcane was...

Soil phosphorus availability and soybean response to phosphorus starter fertilizer 90
Rosolem,Ciro Antonio; Merlin,Alexandre.
Phosphorus fixation in tropical soils may decrease under no-till. In this case, P fertilizer could be surface-spread, which would improve farm operations by decreasing the time spend in reloading the planter with fertilizers. In the long term, less soluble P sources could be viable. In this experiment, the effect of surface-broadcast P fertilization with both soluble and reactive phosphates on soil P forms and availability to soybean was studied with or without fertilization with soluble P in the planting furrow in a long-term experiment in which soybean was grown in rotation with Ruzigrass (Brachiaria ruziziensis). No P or 80 kg ha-1 of P2O5 in the form of triple superphosphate or Arad reactive rock phosphate was applied on the surface of a soil with...

Sulfur in agriculture 90
Lucheta,Adriano Reis; Lambais,Marcio Rodrigues.
Sulfur (S) deficiency in soils is becoming increasingly common in many areas of the world as a result of agronomic practices, high biomass exportation and reduced S emissions to the atmosphere. In this review, the incidence and commercial exploitation of S pools in nature are discussed, as well as the importance of S for plants and the organic and inorganic S forms in soil and their transformations, especially the process of microbiological oxidation of elemental sulfur (S0) as an alternative to the replenishment of S levels in the soil. The diversity of S0-oxidizing microorganisms in soils, in particular the genus Thiobacillus, and the biochemical mechanisms of S0 oxidation in bacteria were also addressed. Finally, the main methods to measure the S0...

Recovery of degraded pasture in Rondônia: macronutrients and productivity of brachiaria brizantha 90
Noronha,Norberto Cornejo; Andrade,Cristiano Alberto de; Limonge,Fernando Célio; Cerri,Carlos Clemente; Cerri,Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino; Piccolo,Marisa de Cássia; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine.
Pasture is the main form of land use in Amazonia. Over time the pasture grass loses vigor and yields decrease, indicating a certain degree of degeneration. The main causes of degradation are lack of pasture maintenance and subsequent weed infestation, the choice of regionally unsuitable forage species and excessive grazing. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of different recovery managements on soil chemical properties and grass yield of a degraded pasture in Rondônia. For this purpose, an experiment was installed in October 2001, consisting of five treatments: C = control; HA = harrowing + NPK + micronutrients; HE = Herbicide + NK + micronutrients; R = No-tillage rice + NPK + micronutrients; and S = No-tillage soybean + PK +...

Nutrient relations during an eucalyptus cycle at different population densities 90
Leite,Fernando Palha; Silva,Ivo Ribeiro; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; Barros,Nairam Félix de; Neves,Júlio César Lima; Villani,Ecila Mercês de Albuquerque.
To synchronize nutrient availability with the requirements of eucalyptus during a cultivation cycle, the nutrient flow of this system must be well understood. Essential, for example, is information about nutrient dynamics in eucalyptus plantations throughout a cultivation cycle, as well as impacts on soil nutrient reserves caused by the accumulation and subsequent export of nutrients via biomass. It is also important to quantify the effect of some management practices, such as tree population density (PD) on these fluxes. Some nutrient relations in an experiment with Eucalyptus grandis, grown at different PDs in Santa Barbara, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were evaluated for one cultivation cycle. At forest ages of 0.25, 2.5, 4.5, and 6.75 years,...
