Blanchard, Michel.
During one year, from March 1988 to June 1989, the intertidal population of Cerastoderma edule in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, is investigated. Physiological measurements (ingestion, egestion, respiration and excretion) are monthly carried out in laboratory. We observe that reproductive metabolism influences the results. The energy budget of this cockle population, based on a biomass and production estimate for a 15 x 10 super(6) sq.m. area, is calculated and discussed.

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

Morizur, Yvon.
The average length at which female Nephrops norvegicus attain their first maturity was determined during 1977 and 1978 by following the presence of spermatophores and development of the ovaries. During 1978, females were sexually mature at the age of 2 but in 1977 they did not mature before the age of 3. The cumulative maturity curves are sigmoid, due to an overlapping of Gaussian curves. A logistic equation was developed to calculate the percentage of mature females at each length. There is no evidence that the present fishing levels reduce the chances of a female with developing ovaries to be fertilized, since 90 to 100% of such females bear spermatophores.

Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Demaneche, Sebastien.
During the years 2008 to 2013 several observations of catches were planned on board of set netters fishing in the bay of Biscay, in the English Channel, in the North sea and in the Mediterranean area (around Corsica). All the observations were done on nets without pingers and they were pooled to provide an average bycatch rate of marine mammals by fleet. Estimates of annual bycatch by using the fishing efforts of the year 2012 were provided by fleet. Harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena was the most common bycatch in set nets. An average annual estimate of 600 harbour porpoises was obtained for the French fleet; other species recorded in set nets were mainly common dolphin Delphinus delphis, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba and the two species of seals...

Jacq, Estelle; Prieur, D.
Studies concerning the respective role of free-living and particle-bound bacteria in pelagic ecosystems, sometimes gave opposite results. The comparative distribution of these bacterial patterns was studied in two sites of Brittany. In the Bay of Brest, a shallow and semi-enclosed area, the bacterial communities were dominated by the free-living forms, except during the phytoplankton bloom, which was accompanied by a clear increase of the particle-bound forms. Off the west coasts of Brittany, the Ushant front separates stratified water masses from mixed water masses. The distribution of particle-bound bacteria fluctuated according to the structure of the water masses and in mixed waters, was related to particulate matter from different origins. Results...

Morizur, Yvon.
The size and age at sexual maturity of the lobsters was determined by secondary sexual characteristics (1) morphological criteria such as length of P1 protopodite, size of the abdomen, and the presence or absence of ovarian hairs in the female; and (2) functional criteria such as the presence of spermatophores in the female and development of the ovaries. A study of fecundity was carried out after maturation of the ovaries and at the end of incubation. The number of eggs lost during incubation was estimated at 45%. The contribution of different age classes to the global fecundity of the stock was simulated on a model of fecundity by recruits.

Données économiques sur la conchyliculture française ArchiMer
Antona, Martine.
15% of the shellfish production in France comes from natural deposits and the other 85% from farming. Years 1980-1990 showed a slight decrease in the shellfish production then a resurgence from 1985 onwards, an increase in the oyster production and a strong decrease in mussel production at the beginning of the 1980's followed by a resurgence due to the increase of open sea activity. In France, the shellfish market represents 300,000 tons, divided between oysters (40%), mussels (30%) and scallops (15%). Importations of mussels and scallops in order to supply the domestic market are important. On the other hand, external trade flows are very low as far as oysters are concerned: France is the only important market for oysters in Europe. (unverified OCR)

Morel, M; Salamon, W.
European regulations (Directive EEC/15.07.91) provide that marketing of live bivalve molluscs intended for human consumption must comply with strict bacteriological criteria. In order to comply with these requirements along the Nord/Pas de Calais coast and to preserve shellfish culture activities, a transfer through a depuration plant is the only solution at the present time. IFREMER, with the support of the Nord/Pas-de-Calais regional authorities, conducted an initial study on the use of UV for mussel depuration and on the design of a shellfish depuration plant. This study was used as a basis by TECHMAR Company to design a project for a modular type plant, under contract from the Nord/Pas-de-Calais Region. The basic module consists of two ponds with a...

Before and after wasting disease in common eelgrass Zostera marina along the French Atlantic coasts: a general overview and first accurate mapping ArchiMer
Godet, L; Fournier, Jonathan; Van Katwijk, M; Olivier, F; Le Mao, Patrick; Retiere, C.
We examined the original manuscripts of a French national survey conducted in 1933 on the state of common eelgrass Zostera marina beds along the French Atlantic coasts during the period when wasting disease struck the entire North Atlantic population in the 1930s. Based on GIS related techniques and old sets of aerial photographs, we present the first accurate mapping of the Z. marina beds before wasting disease occurred and assess their spatial recolonization since the 1950s in the Chausey Archipelago (France), which contains large Z. marina beds. The national survey confirmed that the Z. marina beds almost totally disappeared from the French coasts during the 1930s. However, the disease symptoms seem to have begun locally a few years before. On the study...

REMORA. Résultats nationaux année 1994 ArchiMer
Goyard, Emmanuel.
What is REMORA? REMORA −REseau MOllusques du département Ressources Aquacoles− (Aquaculture Resources Department Mollusc Network) is a surveillance network dedicated to the growth of hollow oysters Crassostrea gigas. In the past and in most production areas, observations were made on a regular basis. In 1993, homogenising experimental protocols between the different laboratories involved was decided, as well as using a common initial oyster batch, therefore organizing a network covering all of the French coasts. This network aims at providing, each year, the production's basic characteristics found in main oyster beds (growth reference). It also better characterizes variations and shows potential tendencies.

Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon; Raguenes, Gerard.
Several relationships between the fecundity and the weight or the size of females have been studied for three different (based on "eye-index") stages of incubation. The relationship between the average weight of eggs at the beginning of incubation and the size of the females shows that the egg size varies according to the female's size. Loss of eggs during incubation has been studied ; the average loss between the two extreme stages of incubation is around 27%. This is a lowered value of what accurs during the whole incubation period. Egg losses are greater for small females than for big females. The annual frequency of spawning and size at first maturity have been determined in for differents fishing effort than by the commercial size.

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Simonne, Charlotte; Claude, Serge; Palvadeau, Hubert; Guilpain, Patrice; D'Amico, Florence; Le Gall, Patrik; Vercelli, Catherine; Pien, C.
The network REMORA by IFREMER quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitored 46 sites in 2004, including the 7 new sites added in 2003. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. Globally speaking, the year 2004 was a good year for oyster farming, with a low mortality and a fast growth. The rearing yield (survival x growth) reached 2.0 for adults instead of 1.8 usually. However, the meat index remained close to the average inter annual data....
