The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest.... |

The average length at which female Nephrops norvegicus attain their first maturity was determined during 1977 and 1978 by following the presence of spermatophores and development of the ovaries. During 1978, females were sexually mature at the age of 2 but in 1977 they did not mature before the age of 3. The cumulative maturity curves are sigmoid, due to an overlapping of Gaussian curves. A logistic equation was developed to calculate the percentage of mature females at each length. There is no evidence that the present fishing levels reduce the chances of a female with developing ovaries to be fertilized, since 90 to 100% of such females bear spermatophores. |

During the years 2008 to 2013 several observations of catches were planned on board of set netters fishing in the bay of Biscay, in the English Channel, in the North sea and in the Mediterranean area (around Corsica). All the observations were done on nets without pingers and they were pooled to provide an average bycatch rate of marine mammals by fleet. Estimates of annual bycatch by using the fishing efforts of the year 2012 were provided by fleet. Harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena was the most common bycatch in set nets. An average annual estimate of 600 harbour porpoises was obtained for the French fleet; other species recorded in set nets were mainly common dolphin Delphinus delphis, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba and the two species of seals... |

A new species of Terebellidae, Loimia ramzega sp. nov., has been identified from North Brittany beaches (English Channel). This new species is characterized by its gigantic size (max 650 mm, live), two pairs of lateral lappets on segments 1 and 3; first pair more ventral, second pair more developed and lateral but oblique, with wavy edge. Nine ventral pads from segment 2 (fused on segments 2 and 3), first three pads swollen, next ones subsequently decreasing in size. Three types of notochaetae, asymmetrically bilimbate, symmetrically bilimbate and capillary. Uncini pectinate with 6 teeth (some with 5 teeth) slightly decreasing in size, in one vertical row. Pygidium with about 14 long conical marginal papillae surrounding anus. |

The purpose of this book is to value the economic significance of marine-related activities in France. Each industrial, or public non-commercial, sector is characterized by key figures relating to annual turnover, value added, employment and budget. These figures are accompanied with qualitative information on the recent development, current situation and future perspectives of the sector in terms of markets, employment and technological progress. Public and private R&D, and the protection of coastal and marine environment are also allowed for. Given the diversity of marine-related activities, this information aims at enabling the reader to assess their importance from a comparative angle. |

15% of the shellfish production in France comes from natural deposits and the other 85% from farming. Years 1980-1990 showed a slight decrease in the shellfish production then a resurgence from 1985 onwards, an increase in the oyster production and a strong decrease in mussel production at the beginning of the 1980's followed by a resurgence due to the increase of open sea activity. In France, the shellfish market represents 300,000 tons, divided between oysters (40%), mussels (30%) and scallops (15%). Importations of mussels and scallops in order to supply the domestic market are important. On the other hand, external trade flows are very low as far as oysters are concerned: France is the only important market for oysters in Europe. (unverified OCR) |

European regulations (Directive EEC/15.07.91) provide that marketing of live bivalve molluscs intended for human consumption must comply with strict bacteriological criteria. In order to comply with these requirements along the Nord/Pas de Calais coast and to preserve shellfish culture activities, a transfer through a depuration plant is the only solution at the present time. IFREMER, with the support of the Nord/Pas-de-Calais regional authorities, conducted an initial study on the use of UV for mussel depuration and on the design of a shellfish depuration plant. This study was used as a basis by TECHMAR Company to design a project for a modular type plant, under contract from the Nord/Pas-de-Calais Region. The basic module consists of two ponds with a... |

What is REMORA? REMORA −REseau MOllusques du département Ressources Aquacoles− (Aquaculture Resources Department Mollusc Network) is a surveillance network dedicated to the growth of hollow oysters Crassostrea gigas. In the past and in most production areas, observations were made on a regular basis. In 1993, homogenising experimental protocols between the different laboratories involved was decided, as well as using a common initial oyster batch, therefore organizing a network covering all of the French coasts. This network aims at providing, each year, the production's basic characteristics found in main oyster beds (growth reference). It also better characterizes variations and shows potential tendencies. |

The network REMORA by IFREMER quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitored 46 sites in 2004, including the 7 new sites added in 2003. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. Globally speaking, the year 2004 was a good year for oyster farming, with a low mortality and a fast growth. The rearing yield (survival x growth) reached 2.0 for adults instead of 1.8 usually. However, the meat index remained close to the average inter annual data.... |

This document, which is the eighth edition of a series started in 2000, provides a global overview of the data collected in 2010 as part of the Fisheries Observatory of Ifremer. It aims to present a summary of the activity and economic situation of the French fleets operating in the North Sea, English Channel, Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in 2009. It updates the 2008 issue, which was published in 2010. The summary is intended for a wide audience. The document contains several fact sheets: • The first sheet provides a description of the French national fishing fleet (North Sea - Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, excluding overseas), including vessel and crew characteristics. It also presents the evolution of the French fishing fleet since... |
