RICHNESS, CELLULOLYTIC ACTIVITY, AND FUNGICIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF FUNGI FROM A BIRD BIOLOGICAL COLLECTION Acta biol.Colomb.
ARENAS-CASTRO,Henry; MUNOZ-GOMEZ,Sergio A; CASTAÑO-CASTAÑO,Lorena; URIBE-ACOSTA,Melissa; LIZARAZO-MEDINA,Pilar Ximena.
Biological collections in natural history museums serve important purposes to the scientific community and the general public, however, their value and utility might be diminished by biodeterioration. We studied a biological collection that represents more than sixty years of avifauna sampling of Colombia, the country with the highest bird diversity. An initial inspection of the collection showed that the general appearance of some specimens was compromised by mold-like growth on their surfaces. We aimed at (i) identifying the taxonomic affiliation of these fungi, (ii) evaluating their cellulolytic activity, and (iii) probing chemical agents that could be utilized to control their growth. The most common fungi genera were Aspergillus, Penicillium,...

Aguilar-Barragan,Alejandra; García-Torres,Ana Elisa; Odriozola-Casas,Olga; Macedo-Raygoza,Gloria; Ogura,Tetsuya; Manzo-Sánchez,Gilberto; James,Andrew C.; Islas-Flores,Ignacio; Beltrán-García,Miguel J..
The chemical management of the black leaf streak disease in banana caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis (Morelet) requires numerous applications of fungicides per year. However this has led to fungicide resistance in the field. The present study evaluated the activities of six fungicides against the mycelial growth by determination of EC50 values of strains collected from fields with different fungicide management programs: Rustic management (RM) without applications and Intensive management (IM) more than 25 fungicide application/year. Results showed a decreased sensitivity to all fungicides in isolates collected from IM. Means of EC50 values in mg L-1 for RM and IM were: 13.25 ± 18.24 and 51.58 ± 46.14 for azoxystrobin, 81.40 ± 56.50 and 1.8575 ± 2.11 for...

Fungicide resistance and genetic variability in plant pathogenic strains of Guignardia citricarpa BJM
Possiede,Y.M.; Gabardo,J.; Kava-Cordeiro,V.; Galli-Terasawa,L.V.; Azevedo,J.L.; Glienke,C..
Citrus black spot (CBS) is a plant disease of worldwide occurrence, affecting crops in Africa, Oceania, and South America. In Brazil, climate provides favorable conditions and CBS has spread to the Southeast and South regions. CBS is caused by the fungus Guignardia citricarpa (anamorph: Phyllosticta citricarpa) and its control is based on the use of fungicides, such as benzimidazoles. In South Africa, the disease was kept under control for 10 years with benomyl, until cases of resistance to high concentrations of this fungicide were reported from all citrus-producing areas. Azoxystrobin (a strobilurin) has been found effective in controlling phytopathogens, including CBS, in a wide range of economically important crops. The present study investigated in...

Management of blight of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum var. grossum) caused by Drechslera bicolor BJM
Jadon,Kuldeep Singh; Shah,Rakesh; Gour,Hari Narayan; Sharma,Pankaj.
Abstract Sweet or bell pepper is a member of the Solanaceae family and is regarded as one of the most popular and nutritious vegetable. Blight, in the form of leaf and fruit blight, has been observed to infect bell pepper crops cultivated at the horticulture farm in Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, India. Based on disease severity, we attempted to curb this newly emerged problem using different fungicides, plant extracts, bio-control agents, and commercial botanicals against the fungus in laboratory and pot experiments. Bio-control agent Trichoderma viride and plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolate Neist-2 were found to be quite effective against bell pepper blight. All evaluated fungicides, botanicals, commercial botanicals, and...

Sensitivity of Venturia inaequalis Chilean Isolates to Difenoconazole, Fenarimol, Mancozeb, and Pyrimethanil Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Henríquez S,Jose Luis; Sarmiento V,Oliver; Alarcón C,Paula.
Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) is the most important disease in Chilean apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards where fungicide management is the main tool to control disease. Sensitivity tests to difenoconazole, fenarimol, mancozeb, and pyrimethanil fungicides were conducted on V. inaequalis wild isolates to construct local baseline sensitivity distributions, and compare them with a collection of isolates from seven different commercial orchards with no evidence of practical resistance. In vitro assays were conducted and sensitivity was measured as inhibition of mycelial growth (difenoconazole, fenarimol, pyrimethanil) or conidial germination (mancozeb). Departure from the baseline distribution to less sensitivity was found for difenoconazole,...

Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea limits grape production in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Latorre,Bernardo A; Elfar,Karina; Ferrada,Enrique E.
Gray mold (GM) caused by Botrytis cinerea is a major disease of grapes (Vitis vinifera) that substantially reduces the yield and quality of grape production in temperate and humid regions of the world. B. cinerea is a necrotrophic fungus that attacks the non-lignified aerial organs of grapes; in particular, berries are highly susceptible during ripening. The polycyclic nature and exponential progress exhibited by GM at the beginning of the its epidemic, as well as the abundant inoculum production, the high dissemination efficiency, the wide host range and the high genetic variability of B. cinerea, explain the difficulties encountered in attempting to control GM. At present, integrated disease management, including cultural and chemical control, is the...

Herrera,Rodrigo; Núñez,David; Romero,Natalia; Besoain,Ximena; Pérez,Luz María; Montealegre,Jaime.
The germination of conidia in wild-type (Th11, Th12 and Th650) and mutant (Th11A80.1, Th12A10.1 and Th650-NG7) strains of Trichoderma harzianum that were exposed to different commercial fungicides was studied. All wild-type and mutant Trichoderma strains were germinated in the presence of 1,700 mg L-1 of pencycuron. The wild-type strains Th12 and Th650 and the corresponding mutant strains Th12A10.1 and Th650-NG7 were sensitive to all concentrations of iprodione and metalaxil + mancozeb. The EC50 (Median Effective Concentration) values for the different fungicides were between 10-1 and 10-4 less than the concentrations recommended for field applications; one exception was Phyto-fos on Th650-NG7, where this ratio was 0.72. These results establish whether...

Evaluation of DMI fungicides against species of Diplodia and Neofusicoccum associated with Botryosphaeria canker of grapevine Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Torres,Carolina; Latorre,Bernardo A; Undurraga,Pedro; Besoain,Ximena.
The Botryosphaeriaceae species have been widely studied and are considered a serious problem to the production of grapes worldwide. To aid in the development of control strategies for these fungi, in vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of demethylation inhibiting (DMI) fungicides against Diplodia seriata, D. mutila, Neofusicoccum australe and N. parvum isolated from grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Fungicidal effectiveness was evaluated over a range of increasing concentrations using measurements of both the inhibition of conidial germination and the effects on mycelial growth. The effective concentrations (EC) necessary to inhibit conidial germination and mycelial growth by 50% (EC50) and 90% (EC90) were estimated by linear...

Effectiveness of isofetamid, a new succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor fungicide, in the control of grapevine gray mold Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Piqueras,Carlos M; Latorre,Bernardo A; Torres,René.
Gray mold is an important disease in grapevines in Chile, and its control depends primarily on the use of fungicides with a single-site mode of action. Botrytis cinerea has a high risk of developing resistance against such fungicides. Therefore, novel chemical options are needed to achieve satisfactory control of gray mold. Isofetamid is a new succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicide with a single-site of action that inhibits cellular respiration and appears to be a new option in the chemical treatment against gray mold. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of isofetamid in controlling grapevine gray mold in Chile. Field trials undertaken in three different commercial vineyards showed that isofetamid controls gray mold to a...

Deposit of pesticides without and with adjuvants on citrus seedlings following different intervals of artificial rain Ciência Rural
Decaro,Ricardo Augusto; Decaro Junior,Sergio Tadeu; Ferreira,Marcelo da Costa.
ABSTRACT: For a crop protection product to achieve its goal, the product must be applied and remain on the leaves until it is absorbed. This situation may be compromised due to rainfall after spraying, thus necessitating reapplication which increase the overall cost. Application technology research has focused on alternatives and solutions to mitigate this effect through the use of adjuvants. The objective of this research was to evaluate the deposit of spraying liquid on citrus seedlings using the products spirodiclofen, propargite, imidacloprid, lambda cyhalothrin, copper oxychloride, and copper hydroxide with water mixed with the adjuvants polydimethylsiloxane and phosphatidylcholine. Seedlings were subjected to simulated rains of 10mm at intervals of...
