So...

Warum Demeter-Betriebe Tiere halten Organic Eprints

Examination of the impact and effectiveness of herd health and welfare assessment in im-proving animal welfare on organic dairy farms, using qualitative interviews. Organic Eprints
Burke, Dr J; Roderick, Dr S.
During winter 2002-03, 15 organic dairy farms in SW England participated in a herd health and welfare assessment and benchmarking study. A second assessment was carried out on 14 of the original 15 farms and on 14 new farms during winter 2003-04. The effectiveness of the herd health and welfare as-sessments and benchmarking in delivering animal health and welfare improvements was investigated by means of qualitative research interviews. The inter-views were conducted between August and November 2004. The average length of interview was one hour and fifteen minutes. Five common themes were iden-tified and headed ‘Sensitivities and misgivings’; ‘Ac-ceptability of scoring methodology and indicators assessed’; ‘Raised awareness and motivation to im-prove’;...

Foderet påvirker ørredernes tarmkanal Organic Eprints
Ingerslev, Hans-Christian; Madsen, Lone.

Plant and natural product based homemade remedies manufactured and used by farmers of six central Swiss cantons to treat livestock Organic Eprints
Bischoff, Tinetta; Vogl, Christian R.; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klarer, Franziska; Meier, Beat; Hamburger, Matthias; Walkenhorst, Michael.
The use of medicinal plants and other natural multicomponent remedies might be one measure to reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock. Ethnoveterinary research has the potential to identify promising natural remedies. The knowledge about remedies for livestock was collected from farmers in six central Swiss cantons, Glarus, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Schwyz, Zug and Uri. Between February and April 2013 49 interviews with 63 farmers (25 females and 38 males, aged 24–74) were conducted. We collected information on the manufacturing of 370 homemade remedies. Of these, 114 contained no plants, 26 contained a mixture of two to five plants, and 230 contained one plant species (defined as homemade single-herbal remedy report (HSHR)). These 230 HSHRs represented 68...

H., HOSTE; J.-P., GUITARD; J.-C., PONS.
Gastrointestinal trichostrongylosis represent one of the main constraint associated with the breeding of ruminants on pastures which is associated with Organic Farming. Besides the repeated use of anthelmintic treatments, the control of these parasitic infections can also be based on an improvement of the host response and on the reduction of animal infection by decreasing the contact with infective larvae through pertinent grazing management. Mixed grazing between different hosts species, particularly between cattle and small ruminants, represents one of the method to reduce the infestivity of pastures. This method is based on the relatively high specificity of many nematode species for one host. The advantages and limits of mixed grazing...

Sundrum, Albert.
The current performance of organic farms in relation to animal health often does not surpass the level of conventional production and does not always meet the self-proclaimed aims and the expectations of the consumers. Taking into consideration the specific characteristics of multi-factorial diseases and the need for appropriate living conditions, the question arises which obstacles are decisive for the current situation and need to be changed in order to improve animal health status. Taking the system approach of organic farming into account, several theses in relation to the most relevant obstacles are discussed. Obstacles seem to be evident in relation to deficits concerning the perception of health problems, lack of a clear goal in relation to the...

Tanniferous forage plants with anthelmintic properties: the example of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Maurer, Veronika; Häring, Dieter; Langhans, Wolfgang; Hertzberg, Hubertus.
Introduction: Sainfoin is a high-quality condensed tannin containing forage plant. The knowledge about anthelmintic effects against sheep nematodes and about the influence of plant preservation (e.g. ensiling) on the anthelmintic activity is limited. Method: 36 parasite naïve lambs (6 groups of 6 animals each) were infected with H. contortus (7,000 L3) and C. curticei (15,000 L3). From day 28 until day 44 p.i., groups A1, B1 and C1 received fresh, dried or ensiled sainfoin. Groups A2, B2 and C2 served as respective tannin-free controls. Individual faecal egg counts on a dry matter basis (FECDM) were performed every 3-4 days. On day 44, all animals were slaughtered and adult worm populations were determined. Results: The consumption of sainfoin was...

Different perspectives on animal health and implications for communication between stakeholders Organic Eprints
Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Bielecke, Alexandra; Sundrum, Albert.
Despite numerous efforts of various professional groups, the level of production diseases in livestock production remains on an unsatisfying high level. Barriers in the process of knowledge transfer in connection with the improvement of the animal health status have been the topic of a study taking different stakeholder perspectives into account. Using instruments of communication science, the perspectives of farmers, agricultural and veterinarian advisors as well as animal scientists were brought together and discussed in workshops. The process revealed the following barriers in the transfer of knowledge: diverging comprehension of animal health, complexity behind multifactorial production diseases, reluctance to assume responsibility, and role conflicts....

USE OF TANNIN RICH PLANTS FOR THE CONTROL OF GASTROINTESTINAL NEMATODES IN SMALL RUMINANTS IN ORGANIC FARMING SYSTEMS. Organic Eprints
HOSTE, HERVE; BRUNET, SEVERINE; PAOLINI, VIRGINIE; BAHUAUD, DIANE; CHAUVEAU, SEVERINE; BARRAU, ELODIE; LEFRILEUX, YVES; FOURQUAUX, ISABELLE; FOURASTE, ISABELLE.
Gastrointestinal nematodes represent one of the main threat associated with the use of pastures by grazing small ruminants. In organic farming systems, the use of chemical treatments to control these parasitic diseases remain strictly limited. There is thus a need to explore novel, alternative approaches to complement or replace the action of chemical anthelmintics. This seek for novel solutions is also widely required in other farming systems, because of the widespread diffusion of anthelmintic (AH) resistance within worm populations and because of the increasing concern of consumers on drug residues in animal products.

Status Quo der Tierwohlsituation in der deutschen Milchziegenhaltung Organic Eprints
Sporkmann, Katrin; March, S.; Brinkmann, Jan; Georg, Heiko.
Dairy goat farming is a growing market in animal husbandry in Germany. Due to this expansion, farmers special advice on health, feeding and housing is growing as well. Thus a project was initiated to assess welfare and housing systems three times in three and a quarter year on 40 dairy goat farms in Germany. The main goal was to benchmark welfare concept on the same farms. In the first assessment, 1876 lactating goats in total were assessed on 40 farms. From a set of 22 animal based indicators in total, 8 showed a higher prevalence than 5 %: moderate and severe claw overgrowth, mild udder lesions, small udder scars, moderate udder asymmetry, swellings, head lesions, hairless patches and avoidance distance test. Interestingly, not more than 1.6 % of...

Implications of feed concentrate reduction in organic grassland-based dairy systems: a long-term on-farm study Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Schenk, Isabel K.; Maeschli, Ariane; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Zeitz, Johanna O.; Moakes, Simon; Klocke, Peter; Staehli, Pamela; Notz, Christophe; Walkenhorst, Michael.
In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the...

Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
This research investigated the effect of a handling treatment in beef cattle on stress related parameters. Ten 15 months old Limousin beef cattle (crossbreds) were divided in a handling group (HG) and a control group (KG) by pairing animals with similar avoidance distances. The back-region handlings were carried out 10 times for 8 min during 5 weeks before slaughter. Before and after all handling sessions, each animal was tested by an avoidance distance test (AWD). From each carcass, samples of M. longissimus dorsi were analysed for meat quality (cooking loss, shear force and meat colour). Differences between first and second avoidance distance test were greater in HG animals. Avoidance distance got much lower in HG animals than in KG animals. Shear force...
