PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS REGARDING GROWTH OF THE DAIRY INDUSTRY IN ILLINOIS AgEcon
Rendleman, C. Matthew; Peterson, William C.; Coe, Livy M.; Eberle, Phillip R.; Griswold, Kenneth E..
Community opposition to dairies has altered location decisions by milk producers. Our objective was to identify residents' perceptions towards dairy by individual and community characteristics. A mail survey of residents of dairy counties and non-dairy counties was conducted. Dairy county residents were more willing to live close to a dairy.

The Economic Impacts of Avian Influenza on World Poultry Trade and the U.S. Poultry Industry: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto; Djunaidi, Andrew C.M..
Simulation results showed that simultaneous outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Asia, the United States, Brazil, and selected European countries will have significant impacts on world poultry trade. Assuming demand for chicken meat is constant, the global export price is simulated to increase by 9.63%. HPAI outbreaks in the United States, Economic Union, and Brazil will have a greater impact on export price than in any other possible three-region case. Outbreaks in the United States and Brazil would still lead to major impacts on world poultry trade, confirming large country effects.

DOWN MARKET EFFECTS IN BEEF COW-CALF HERDS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
In 1995 and 1996, prices for weaned calves were at the lowest point for the current cattle market cycle. The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Beef ,97 Study examined the effects of the down market on beef cow-calf herd management practices. Most producers did not alter management practices in response to the down market. Among producers who made changes, costs were cut largely in the area of herd health management. Specific management practices in which costs were cut included decreases in use of vaccinations (7.4% of operations), herd medications (7.7% of operations), individual cow medications (5.0% of operations), and veterinary services (14.1% of operations). Other ways that producers altered management practices in response to the down...

EVA: EQUINE VIRAL ARTERITIS AND THE U.S. HORSE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Garber, Lindsey.
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis population for education and research purposes. Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is an infectious disease caused by the equine arteritis virus (EAV). It can cause abortion in pregnant mares and death in young foals. Breeding stallions may become permanent carriers of the virus. Financial losses may include those due to abortion and/or disease and death in very young foals, reduced demand to breed and/or decreased commercial value of persistently infected stallions, and denied export market for...

A bioeconomic model of carbon trading within an Australian grazing enterprise AgEcon
Gowen, Rebecca; Rolfe, John; Donaghy, Peter.
The Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) and other carbon trading programs have been promoted as alternative sources of income for agricultural producers, particularly those on marginal land. This paper presents the results of a bioeconomic model developed to compare the relative returns from a beef enterprise against changing regrowth management practices to sequester additional carbon and sell carbon offsets. The model is constructed based on a 1000 hectare parcel of land in Central Queensland and is calculated for two landtypes; Brigalow and Eucalypt. Assuming zero transaction costs and a 20 year contract period, a carbon-cattle enterprise has higher returns that a cattle-only enterprise at relatively low carbon prices for both land types. However, results...

Demand for Pasture-Raised Livestock Products in Michigan: Results of Consumer Surveys and Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Conner, David S.; Oppenheim, Diana.
Pasture-raised livestock products present a niche-marketing opportunity for small- and medium-scale farmers; growth of this market may enhance the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of livestock agriculture. Results from an earlier statewide poll in Michigan found that consumers place great importance on product attributes associated with the pasture-based production model. This report presents findings from a combination of consumer surveys conducted at three Michigan retail locations and a series of experimental auctions. Participants in both the survey and auction components view pasture-raised beef and milk products very favorably, believing these products are healthy for humans to eat and are raised in environmentally friendly and...

MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY CHANGE UNDER DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ASSISTANCE: THE AUSTRALIAN DAIRY INDUSTRY AgEcon
Knopke, Philip.
The effects of different levels of protection on productivity measures are frequently ignored in economic analysis. In this paper. a procedure is developed to net out the effects of non-marginal cost pricing on the traditional Tornqvist productivity measure. Total factor productivity in the dairy industry is estimated to have grown at a 1.5 per cent annual rate over the period 1967-68 to 1982-83. A state and regional analysis of the dairy industry showed that the Victorian industry had outperformed the New South Wales industry, a factor that was attributed to major policy differences between the two states.

EFFECT OF RISK AVERSION ON FEEDER CATTLE PRICES AgEcon
Lee, Jung-Hee; Brorsen, B. Wade.
This paper determines the effects of cattle feeders' risk aversion on feeder cattle prices using pen data of Kansas feedlots. Higher profit risk results in lower feeder cattle prices. The elasticity of feeder cattle price with respect to profit risk was small (-0.013). The risk elasticity estimated here is similar to risk elasticities in previous studies and thus, the use of pen-level data does not seem to add much to the study of risk.

ANTIMICROBIAL DRUG USE AND VETERINARY COSTS IN U.S. LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Mathews, Kenneth H., Jr..
Antimicrobial drugs are fed to animals at low levels to treat diseases, to promote growth, and to increase feed efficiency. Incorporating low levels of antimicrobial drugs in livestock feeds has been shown to be a factor stimulating the development of antimicrobial drug resistant bacteria in livestock. Since many of the drugs used to treat livestock are the same as or are related to drugs used in human health care, there is concern that resistant organisms may pass from animals to humans through the handling of animals or food derived from animals. The movement of pathogens from animals to humans, and vice versa, has been documented, but the extent to which it has occurred or could occur is unknown. Although it is estimated that as little as 10 percent of...

MOVEMENT OF MILK IN THE UNITED STATES AND ITS IMPLICATIONS TO THE SPREAD AND CONTROL OF FOOD-AND-MOUTH DISEASE AgEcon
Aulaqi, Nasser A..
Given that infected milk may be involved in the spread of FMD and that it may prove to be a serious obstacle to FMD control this study has the following objectives: (1) give a global picture of the production and marketing system of fluid and other milk products in the United States. The main pathways of milk movement will described. (2) Indicate the major risks of FMD spread associated with the movement of dairy products. (3) Suggest recommendation for minimizing both the risk of spread and the impact of controls on the dairy industry.

Bioeconomic Evaluation of Substitution of Balanced Feed with Chaya (Cnidoscolus Chayamansa) Leaves in Tilapia Production AgEcon
Poot-Lope, Gaspar Roman; Gasca-Leyva, Eucario.
In Mexico, the culture of tilapia has developed in rural areas, where the main problem is low producer income. The state of Yucatan also experiences this situation, and scarcity of money needed to purchase inputs results in complementary feeding with chaya (Cnidoscolus chayamansa), whose leaves are edible for humans and animals. In this situation, CINVESTAV conducted experiments to determine the optimal level of substitution of balanced feed with ray chaya leaves. The test with 25% and 50% reduced balanced feed complemented with chaya (ad libitum) did not show significant differences (P>0.05) in growth compared to fishes fed with a complete ration of balanced feed (100% feed table). A bioeconomic model was developed, including a submodel of growth...

A MARHAHIZLALÁS GAZDASÁGOSSÁGÁNAK VIZSGÁLATA EGY SOMOGY MEGYEI VÁLLALKOZÁSBAN AgEcon
Csonka, Arnold; Kemeny, Gabor.
A nyereséges termelés alapvető feltétele a tudatos, szakszerű tömegtakarmány-termesztés. A tevékenység eredményének...

SZEZONÁLIS JELENSÉGEK AZ EU NÉHÁNY FONTOS ORSZÁGÁNAK SERTÉSPIACÁN AgEcon
Nyars, Levente; Vizvari, Bela.
A sertéspiacon a kibocsátott termék mennyiségét és a felvásárlási árakat szabá-lyos éven belüli mozgások (szezonalitás) jellemzik. A sertéshús árának alakulását több tényező befolyásolja, például a termelők által felkínált vágósertések mennyi-sége és a feldolgozóipar igényei. Az élősertés iránti keresletet alapvetően meghatá-rozza a feldolgozott sertéshústermékek iránti fogyasztói kereslet. A felvásárlási árakban tapasztalható szezonalitás végeredményben a kereslet-kínálat szezo¬nalitásának tulajdonítható. A cikkben elemzésre kerülnek az általunk legfonto-sabbnak ítélt sertéshústermelő EU tagállamok sertéshús-kibocsátását és felvásárlá-si árait jellemző folyamatok. Hazánk számára mindig is fontos volt az EU piaca, ezért EU tagként a piaci szereplőknek...

The Future Role of Livestock Cooperatives AgEcon
Hogeland, Julie A..
In 1985, a total of 17 regional cooperatives marketed livestock. These cooperatives were created to provide greater competition, bargaining power, and market access for producers. Growth in direct marketing, bypassing the services of cooperatives, has occurred because the number of buyers has decreased and producers want to improve marketing efficiency or lower explicit costs. Less emphasis on providing convenient markets, more competitive service charges, supplementing buy-sell operations with advisory services to help members manage risk, and increasing coordination are options that might enable cooperatives to continue to meet their original Objectives.

A MAGYAR TEJTERMELÉS TŐKE TERMELÉKENYSÉGÉNEK PARCIÁLIS ELEMZÉSE AgEcon
Geszti, Szilard; Borbely, Csaba.
