Ecologia das comunidades de metazoários parasitos, do xaréu, Caranx hippos (Linnaeus) e do xerelete, Caranx latus Agassiz (Osteichthyes, Carangidae) do litoral do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Luque,José Luis; Alves,Dimitri Ramos.
Sixty specimens of Caranx hippos (Linnaeus, 1766) and fifty-five specimens of Caranx latus Agassiz, 1831 collected from the coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro (21-23ºS, 41-45ºW), Brazil, from October 1998 to October 1999, were necropsied to study their metazoan parasites. All specimens of C. hippos were parasitized, and the majority of specimens of C latus (96.4%) were parasitized by one or more metazoan species. Nineteen species of parasites were collected in C. hippos: 5 digeneans, 5 monogeneans, 2 cestodes, 5 nematodes, and 2 copepods. Seventeen species of parasites were collected in C. latus: 6 digeneans, 2 monogeneans, 3 cestodes, 4 nematodes, and 2 copepods. The endoparasites (digeneans, cestodes, and nematodes) were the majoriry, 76.4% and...

ACUTE EXPOSITION OF COMMON SNOOK JUVENILES TO SUBLETHAL LEVELS OF NITRATE Acta biol.Colomb.
PEDROTTI,Fabiola; MAGNOTTI,Caio; STERZELECKI,Fabio; CERQUEIRA,Vinicius.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate nitrate acute toxicity in cultured common snook Centropomus undecimalis juveniles. Fish (20.35±6.10 g and 13.90±1.75 cm) were submitted to a control treatment (without nitrate addition) plus 20 increasing concentrations of nitrate up to 2735 mg L-1 obtained by sodium nitrate. System was semi-static, with 100 % daily water renewed and sodium nitrate addition to maintain the respective concentrations. Water temperature was 20.99±0.55 °C, dissolved oxygen 6.79±0.21 mg L-1, pH 8.23±0.10, alkalinity 141.80±7.68 mg L-1 CaCO3, salinity 33.47±3.75 g L-1, total ammonia and nitrite less than 1 mg L-1. During experimental period (96 h), no mortalities were observed in fish with or without nitrate addition. Compared to...

Sex control in fish is a promising technique for aquaculture, since it gives advantages associated with one sex. The aim of this study was to investigate the feminization of common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) by oral administration of two doses of estradiol-17β (50 and 100 mg E2 kg-1 feed) and control treatment for 45 days and to evaluate their effects on the sex ratio, growth and survival of common snook juveniles. After this period, fish were fed only with commercial feed without hormone supplementation. During the period of E2 administration, the control fish grew more than those in the other treatments. At the end of the experiment in the treatment with 50 mg E2 kg-1, 26.32% of the fish were male, 68.42% were female, and 5.26% were intersex. In the...

Rocinela signata (Isopoda: Aegidae) parasitizing the gills of the spotted goatfish Pseudupeneus maculatus (Actinopterygii: Mullidae) in Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARDOSO,LUCAS; MARTINS,MAURÍCIO L.; GOLZIO,JÉSSICA E.S. DE AQUÍNO; BOMFIM,CAROLINA N.C.; OLIVEIRA,RICARDO L.M. DE; SANTOS,LEILANE B.G. DOS; LACERDA,ANA CAROLINA F..
ABSTRACT Parasitic isopods of fishes usually show wide distribution and low host specificity. This study investigated the occurrence of gill parasites in 120 specimens of spotted goatfish Pseudupeneus maculatus, marine fish of great economic importance for fishery community. The fish were captured monthly in the Coast of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, between October 2012 and September 2013. Eleven isopods were found and identified as Rocinela signata. We observed lower infections in the gills of P. maculatus (prevalence 8.3%, mean intensity 1.6±0.3 and mean abundance 0.1±0.3) when compared to other studies of different host fishes from geographically close locations. This parasite has been reported from a wide variety of fish species, not only in...

Ecological aspects of the surf-zone ichthyofauna of Itamambuca Beach, Ubatuba, SP Biota Neotropica
Gondolo,Guilherme Fernandez; Mattox,George Mendes Taliaferro; Cunningham,Patricia Teresa Monteiro.
Sandy beaches are among the most extensive environments in Brazil and are generally threatened by disorderly urban growth due to their location along the coast, where human populations tend to concentrate. This is especially true in southeastern Brazil, where the largest urban areas are located. Thus, better knowledge regarding these natural resources is of considerable importance. The surf zone of sandy beaches is inhabited by a number of fish species, including juveniles seeking both food and shelter from predators. An ecological survey was conducted in the surf zone of Itamambuca beach in the city of Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, in order to evaluate the composition, structure and dynamics of the fish fauna using community descriptors. Diurnal and...
