Thau is a mediterranean lagoon with a large productive stock of molluscs (oysters, mussels) cultivated on suspended tines and colonised by epibionta (ascidia and others invertebrates, algae, etc ... ). This study was developed as part of the PNOC-OXYTHAU.programme. Its aim was to analyze the effects of oyster farrning on water-mass surrounding structures loaded with suspended molluscs and proximal watermass separating these structures. This study concems particulate suspended matter and deposits of particulate organic matter on the bottom after sedimnentation. Biochemical measurements were carried out for nitrogen, carbon, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. ln order to estimate sedimentaton, bottom sediment traps were used |

The eastern Mediterranean sapropels are among the most intensively investigated phenomena in the paleoceanographic record, but relatively little has been written regarding the origin of the equivalent of the sapropels in the western Mediterranean, the organic-rich layers (ORLs). ORLs are recognized as sediment layers containing enhanced total organic carbon that extend throughout the deep basins of the western Mediterranean and are associated with enhanced total barium concentration and a reduced diversity (dysoxic but not anoxic) benthic foraminiferal assemblage. Consequently, it has been suggested that ORLs represent periods of enhanced productivity coupled with reduced deep ventilation, presumably related to increased continental runoff, in close... |

The new genus and species, Dicrotrichura tricincta, is described from deep mud (1220 m) in the Ligurian Sea (western Mediterranean). It is the first tantulocaridan not found to be attached to a crustacean host but free living in the sediment. It is assigned to the Deoterthridae on the basis of the absence of a rostrum, the abdominal segmentation and the characteristic cephalic pore pattern. It can be distinguished from all known tantulocaridans in the presence of peculiar, bi-articulated caudal setae and the difference in thoracopodal setation between leg 2 and legs 3-5. Some new structures located on the attachment disc are described for the first time. D. tricincta is the second tantulocaridan to be recorded from the Mediterranean. |

A discussion is presented about the zoogeography of the Tipulidae known from the eastern Mediterranean islands; 54 nonendemic and 19 endemic species and subspecies are presently known from 25 islands. The non-endemic and endemic Tipulidae fauna of the islands close to Greece and Turkey is very similar to the fauna of the adjacent mainland. Older endemic as well as more widespread but relict species are found especially on the southern Aegean islands and on Cyprus. The Tipulidae fauna of the Kikládhes apparently is at large of quite recent, probably late Pleistocene origin. |

The new genus Kollasmosoma (Braconidae: Neoneurinae; type species: Elasmosoma platamonense Huddleston, 1976, from the Mediterranean area) is described and illustrated. New combinations are: Kollasmosoma cubiceps (Huddleston, 1976), K. marikovskii (Tobias, 1986), and K. platamonense (Huddleston, 1976). A key to the genera of Neoneurinae is added, and the type species of the known genera are illustrated. |

Ventral thoracic bloodvessel-patterns were defined in a random sample of 152 living specimens of the Apomatus/Protula- complex. Two main patterns and a derived one could be recognized. Eight characters, often used in Serpulid taxonomy and retraceable in preserved material, were determined too: e.g. presence or absence of an operculum and pattern of thoracic setae. These parameters were correlated to the vascular patterns. It was shown that (a) all operculate specimens possess a vascular system of one main pattern; 86% of those closely studied have "Apomatus-setae" at least from setiger 4 onwards; all have radioles with paired rows of compound eyespots. (b) The non-operculate specimens generally possess the other main vascular pattern; the thorax often has... |

Three new Mediterranean species of the Maera quadrimana complex are described and illustrated: Maera revelata from the western sector, M. ariadne from the eastern one and M. aurora from the entire Mediterranean. Maera inaequipes (A. Costa, 1857) is redescribed and its synonymy and geographical distribution are revised to stabilize the confused taxonomy of this species. These four species are compared by means of a table and an identification key. The Maera quadrimana complex is defined and 19 species are recognized in the world. This group is briefly reviewed from a biogeographical point of view. |

Sarcodictyon catenatum Forbes, 1847, is a common species in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. However, often it has been mistaken for Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900. On the basis of British and Mediterranean material we studied the main characters for distinguishing S. catenatum. We consider Rolandia coralloides Lacaze-Duthiers, 1900, to be a valid species and we assign to it all the material named Rolandia rosea by S. Weinberg (1978). Furthermore, a histological study confirmed that R. coralloides typically forms groups of polyps embedded in a common coenenchyme. Therefore, the possibility of transferring R. coralloides from Stolonifera to Alcyonacea is discussed. Evagorgia rosea Philippi, 1842, is here considered to be a nomen dubium. |

We studied the amino acid (AA) composition of the floral nectars of 73 plant species occurring in a phryganic (East Mediterranean garrigue) community and investigated whether AA and sugar composition is shaped by evolutionary (plant phylogeny), ecological (flowering time as a direct effect of summer drought) and coevolutionary (pollinator partnership) constraints. Our study utilised an extensive plantpollinator matrix compiled in the same area where the plants had been sampled. Using HPLC we detected 22 AA compounds/groups of compounds, out of which 15 were commonly present in almost all nectars. Among all AAs, phenylalanine was the most abundant, especially in keystone (ââcornucopianââ) plant species visited by many insect species, such as the... |

(Contribution to the biological study of blue shark (Prionace glauca) incidental catch by the Spanish surface longline fisheries for swordfish in the western Mediterranean). Blue shark (Prionace glauca) bycatches in the Spanish surface longline fisheries in the Mediterranean targeting swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from 1999 to 2001 represented 2% of the total catch. Information from onboard observers during 861 fishing sets in 26 longliners indicated that the highest catches were made in area 4-35000 (Alboran Sea) which represents 75.6% of the total observed catch of blue shark. The observed CPUE are from 5.5 to 34.1 kg/1000 hooks. Mean size at capture (LJFL) was 141.6 cm (SD=35.88). The proportion of females from the total was 0.5. |
