Linking basin-scale connectivity, oceanography and population dynamics for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Dubois, Melodie; Rossi, Vincent; Ser-giacomi, Enrico; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Lopez, Cristobal; Hernandez-garcia, Emilio.
Aim Assessing the spatial structure and dynamics of marine populations is still a major challenge in ecology. The need to manage marine resources from ecosystem and large-scale perspectives is recognized, but our partial understanding of oceanic connectivity limits the implementation of globally pertinent conservation planning. Based on a biophysical model for the entire Mediterranean Sea, this study takes an ecosystem approach to connectivity and provides a systematic characterization of broad-scale larval dispersal patterns. It builds on our knowledge of population dynamics and discusses the ecological and management implications. Location The semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea and its marine ecosystems are used as a case study to investigate broad-scale...

Distribution des microplastiques dans les eaux de sub-surfaces, en Méditerranéenne nord-occidentale ArchiMer
Martinot, Pauline.
Between April and November 2018, 20 microplastic (MPs) samples were collected at 8 sampling stations in French Mediterranean coast from Port-Cros to Banyuls as well as upstream the Rhône River. MPs were found in every sample with variable concentrations, size range and colors. Concentrations ranged from 11 items (Port-Cros) to 15 178 items (Port-Saint-Louis low salinity, PS). The samples with the highest MPs count originate from PS and the Bay of Marseille. MPs count in Spring and Autumn results in 217 (± 12,3) and 351 (± 4,3) respectively for the Bay and particles >1 000 μm dominated sampling stations during both seasons, while PS samples showed greater variability in size distribution. The site PS, near the Rhône River, has the most fiber and the...

Objective. Ostreopsis ovata and Ostreopsis siamensis are tropical unicellular algae that have been found recently in the Mediterranean. Both of these dinoflagellates produce palytoxin (PTX)-like toxins that are powerful vasoconstrictors in mammals. Since 2003, Ostreopsis blooms in Italy and Spain have been accompanied by reports of respiratory problems and skin/mucosa irritation in persons in contact with toxic microalgal cells (epiphytes, plankton, or sea spray) or associated toxins. Methods. In France, a surveillance network has been set up to monitor water conditions and to protect swimmers from contamination due to Ostreopsis. Results. Between 2006 and 2009, a total of nine blooms were observed on the French Mediterranean coast including five that led...

Complex Toxin Profile of French Mediterranean Ostreopsis cf. ovata Strains, Seafood Accumulation and Ovatoxins Prepurification ArchiMer
Brissard, Charline; Herrenknecht, Christine; Sechet, Veronique; Herve, Fabienne; Pisapia, Francesco; Harcouet, Jocelyn; Lemee, Rodolphe; Chomerat, Nicolas; Hess, Philipp; Amzil, Zouher.
Ostreopsis cf. ovata produces palytoxin analogues including ovatoxins (OVTXs) and a putative palytoxin (p-PLTX), which can accumulate in marine organisms and may possibly lead to food intoxication. However, purified ovatoxins are not widely available and their toxicities are still unknown. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the ecophysiology of Ostreopsis cf. ovata and its toxin production as well as to optimize the purification process for ovatoxin. During Ostreopsis blooms in 2011 and 2012 in Villefranche-sur-Mer (France, NW Mediterranean Sea), microalgae epiphytic cells and marine organisms were collected and analyzed both by LC-MS/MS and hemolysis assay. Results obtained with these two methods were comparable, suggesting ovatoxins...

Marine litter is one of the main sources of anthropogenic pollution in the marine ecosystem, with plastic representing a global threat. This paper aims to assess the spatial distribution of plastic macro-litter on the seafloor, identifying accumulation hotspots at a northern Mediterranean scale. Density indices (items km–2) from the MEDITS trawl surveys (years 2013-2015) were modelled by generalized additive models using a Delta-type approach and several covariates: latitude, longitude, depth, seafloor slope, surface oceanographic currents and distances from main ports. To set thresholds for the identification of accumulation areas, the percentiles (85th, 90th and 95th) of the plastic spatial density distribution were computed on the raster data. In the...

Possible link between prey quality, condition and growth of juvenile hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Harmelin Vivien, Mireille; Mahe, Kelig; Bodiguel, Xavier; Mellon, Capucine.
The energy value of the main prey and the growth of juvenile hake in the Gulf of Lions were analysed to determine whether fish condition could be linked to difference in prey quality and resulted in growth difference. Large differences in energy content (15.6 to 23.6 kJ g(-1) DW) among prey types were recorded with low values found in amphipods and natantid shrimps, intermediate values in euphausiids and mysids, and high values in fish. High condition in juvenile hake was linked to the consumption of prey with high energy content. However, no difference in fish growth was observed by the analysis of otolith micro-increments.

Sexual reproduction of the invasive green alga Caulerpa racemosa var. occidentalis in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Panayotidis, P; Zuljevic, A.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, a pan-tropical species Caulerpa racemosa var. occidentalis has been recorded on the numerous new locations throughout the Mediterranean, specifically on its northwestern part where until then it had never been observed. Such extensive spreading is probably supported by successful sexual reproduction. Field observations of fertile plants and synchronous gamete release of C. racemosa var. occidentalis were carried out in Saronikos Gulf (Greece, Aegean Sea) at the beginning of July 1999. The fertile plants were detected due to reticulate depigmented protoplasmic masses and cylindrical papillae. The alga is monoecious. The both sex gametes were released synchronously from all the fertile plants approximately 14 min before...

First Comprehensive Quantitative Multi-Parameter Assessment of the Eutrophication Status from Coastal to Marine French Waters in the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Bay of Biscay, and the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Devreker, David.
The first quantitative and comprehensive assessment of the eutrophication status from coastal to offshore French waters was performed within the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD descriptor 5) for the English Channel, the southern bight of the North Sea, the Celtic Seas, the Bay of Biscay and the Western Mediterranean Sea. Based on a combination of different data sources (in situ, satellite, and modeling products), a fully-integrated dataset was generated over the period 2010–2016. Using the best available knowledge on the eutrophication process and definition, the assessment procedure was implemented considering nutrient pressures, and direct and indirect effects of excessive inputs. The different steps of the assessment were: (i) Establishment of...

Pleuronectes platessa, a ghost fish in the Mediterranean Sea? ArchiMer
Lleonart, Jordi; Farrugio, Henri.
European plaice Pleuronectes platessa often appears in ichthyological check lists for the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in regional field guides and even in some official national landings statistics. However we have not found a single ichthyologist or fisheries biologist who has actually observed this fish in the Mediterranean. The ichthyologic sources available, from classical antiquity to recent times, were checked in order to follow the track of the citations (i.e. true field observations or citations of former authors), and to try to detect misidentifications, if any. Few of these citations appear to be reliable and misidentifications with flounder Platichthys fie:sus are frequent. Recent scientific trawl surveys have not reported any observations of...

Modelling for anchovy recruitment studies in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Nicolle, Amandine; Garreau, Pierre; Liorzou, Bernard.
Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) is an important commercial species and one of the most abundant pelagic fish in the Gulf of Lions and the Catalan Sea. The factors influencing its recruitment are crucial to fisheries and ecological research. Among those factors transport of larvae by hydrodynamics (currents) is important because it determines whether the organisms can reach areas favourable to recruitment or are dispersed. Therefore, the first step in anchovy recruitment modelling is to simulate North-western Mediterranean Sea circulation. Several years (2001-2008) of hydrodynamics were simulated with the MARS-3D code. The resulting simulated currents and salinity are used by Lagrangian tool, Ichthyop, to transport anchovy eggs and larvae to the Western...

The main characteristics concerning the distribution of two of the most important decapod crustaceans of commercial interest in the Mediterranean Sea, the deep-water rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris, and the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, are studied in the European Mediterranean waters. The study is based on data collected under the MEDITS trawl surveys from 1994 to 2015 from the Gibraltar Straits to the northeastern Levantine Basin (Cyprus waters). The observed differences can be interpreted as different responses to environmental drivers related to the differing life history traits of the two species. In fact, N. norvegicus is a long-living, benthic burrowing species with low growth and mortality rates, while P. longirostris is an epibenthic,...

Seafloor litter from the continental shelf and canyons in French Mediterranean Water: Distribution, typologies and trends ArchiMer
Gerigny, Olivia; Brun, Melanie; Fabri, Marie-claire; Tomasino, Corinne; Le Moigne, Morgan; Jadaud, Angelique; Galgani, Francois.
Seafloor litter has been studied both on the continental shelves (by trawling during 24 years) and in canyons (by ROV) of the French Mediterranean sea Water (FMW). On the continental shelf, mean densities range from 49.63 to 289.01 items/km2. The most abundant categories were plastic, glass/ceramics, metals and textiles. Trend analysis shows a significant increase in plastic quantities during the study period. Plastics accumulate at all depths, with heavier items being found in deeper areas, while the continental slope-break appears as a clean area. The spatial distribution of litter revealed the influence of geomorphologic factors, anthropic activities, shipping route, river inputs. All the canyons are affected by debris but coastal canyons (Ligurian Sea...

Genetic characterisation of oyster populations along the north-eastern coast of Tunisia ArchiMer
Dridi, S.; Romdhane, M. S.; Heurtebise, Serge; El Cafsi, M.; Boudry, Pierre; Lapegue, Sylvie.
The taxonomy of oysters has been traditionally based on characteristics of the shell. More recently, the analysis of protein and DNA polymorphism has provided a means to overcome difficulties in distinguishing the different species of oysters based solely on shell morphology. In order to identify oysters of the Tunisian north-east coast, we sequenced a 16S rRNA mitochondrial fragment from 68 oysters sampled from the Bizert Lagoon and the Gulf of Hammamet in northern Tunisia. Comparison of oyster 16S rRNA sequences available in GenBank showed the presence of both Ostreola stentina and Crassostrea gigas in our samples, which could not be detected on the basis of shell morphology only. These data confirmed that C. gigas, a non-native species, is now...

(CS)-C-137 inventory in sediment near the Rhone mouth: role played by different sources ArchiMer
Charmasson, S.
The low tidal range of the Mediterranean Sea and the high sediment load of the Rhone induce the formation of an important submarine delta. The Cs-137 inventory in sediment on a 480 km(2) area near the Rhone mouth reached 19.6 TBq in 1990. The spatial distribution of both sediment accumulation rates and (CS)-C-137 concentrations in this area confirm the existence of a spatially well-delimited zone, i.e. the prodelta, where both parameters are the highest. Thus, 40% of the total amount of Cs-137 stored in this 480 km(2) area was found within the prodelta (30 km(2)) in the close vicinity of the river mouth. This attests to the efficiency of the (CS)-C-137 trapping by the prodelta sediments. A study on the part the different (CS)-C-137 sources in the...

Tsagarakis, Konstantinos; Mytilineou, Chryssi; Haralabous, John; Lorance, Pascal; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Dokos, John.
Data from the MEDITS bottom trawl surveys in the Eastern Ionian Sea, covering a depth range of 28 to 845 m were analysed for the period 1998-2008. For each trawling location, environmental and geographical parameters were recorded, while biomass, abundance, biodiversity and size-based metrics were estimated for the total megafaunal community, as well as for four taxonomic sub-communities (Osteichthyes, Chondrichthyes, Crustacea and Cephalopoda) which were expected to respond differently to environmental changes and fishing. In addition, biomass and abundance of ten species selected based on commercial interest, depth range and life history traits were explored, with particular emphasis on deep-sea species. A New Glider-Compatible Optical Sensor for Dissolved Organic Matter Measurements: Test Case from the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Cyr, Frédéric; Tedetti, Marc; Besson, Florent; Beguery, Laurent; Doglioli, Andrea M.; Petrenko, Anne A.; Goutx, Madeleine.
The MiniFluo-UV is a new glider-compatible optical sensor for measurements of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters. The working principle, sensor design and challenges faced during the validation phase are reported. The first in situ application of the sensor during three glider deployments in the NW Mediterranean sea (spring, summer, and fall) are also presented. For these campaigns, the two channels of the sensor were adjusted to target Tryptophan-like (excitation/emission wavelengths λEx/λEm: 275/340 nm) and Phenanthrene-like (λEx/λEm: 255/360 nm) fluorescence. These were chosen because they represent fluorophores of interest commonly found in seawater. While Tryptophan (an amino-acid believed to be a by-product of biological activity) is...

Contrasted levels of genetic diversity in a benthic Mediterranean octocoral: Consequences of different demographic histories? ArchiMer
Masmoudi, Moutassem Billah; Chaoui, Lamya; Topu, Nur Eda; Hammami, Pachka; Kara, Mohamed Hichem; Aurelle, Didier.
Understanding the factors explaining the observed patterns of genetic diversity is an important question in evolutionary biology. We provide the first data on the genetic structure of a Mediterranean octocoral, the yellow gorgonian Eunicella cavolini, along with insights into the demographic history of this species. We sampled populations in four areas of the Mediterranean Sea: continental France, Algeria, Turkey, and the Balearic and Corsica islands. Along French coasts, three sites were sampled at two depths (20 and 40 m). We demonstrated a high genetic structure in this species (overall F-ST = 0.13), and most pairwise differentiation tests were significant. We did not detect any difference between depths at the same site. Clustering analyses revealed...
