Redescription of Temnocephala iheringi (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) based on specimens from Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the possible type host and type locality Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
The original description of Temnocephala iheringi Haswell, 1893 was based on specimens collected by Hermann von Ihering from undetermined ampullariid apple snails, which at that time were identified as Ampullaria sp., and sent to William H. Haswell, with the type locality simply indicated as Brazil. The type specimens studied by Haswell were not found in the scientific collections of Brazil, Europe or Australia, and should be considered lost. In 1941, Pereira & Cuocolo collected specimens from apple snails, identified as Pomacea lineata (Spix in Wagner, 1827), at two localities (Guaicurús and Salobra) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, central Brazil. These specimens could not be located either and should, thus, be considered lost as well. Pomacea...

Explaining dissimilarities in macroinvertebrate assemblages among stream sites using environmental variables Rev. Bras. Zool.
Melo,Adriano S..
The relationship between community structure and environmental factors usually varies according to ecosystem type, group of organisms, and spatial scale. In this study I assessed whether dissimilarities among assemblages of stream macroinvertebrates are related to differences in environmental variables. Data consisted of macroinvertebrate samples of 10 stream sites during the dry season. Seven environmental variables were assessed. The relationship among dissimilarities in assemblage structure and dissimilarities in environmental variables was assessed using the BioEnv approach. Conductivity and measures related to stream size were the most important variables. However, part of the correlation with conductivity was due to the high value observed in a...

Three new species of Hydroptila (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae) from Northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Wagner Rafael M. de; Santos,Allan Paulo Moreira; Takiya,Daniela Maeda.
Hydroptila Dalman, 1819 is one of the most diverse genus of Hydroptilidae, comprising over 400 species distributed in all biogeographical regions. Only two species were previously recorded from Brazil. Here, three new species from Northeastern Brazil are described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished based on the male genitalia: Hydroptila marighellai sp. nov. can be recognized by the pliers-shaped tergum X; H. florestani sp. nov. can be recognized by having inferior appendages curved upwards in lateral view; and H. zerbinae sp. nov. differs from the other species of the denza group in the apex of the tergum X, which is wide in lateral view, and the undivided apical portion of the phallus. These are the first records of species of...

A synopsis of the South American Hydrovatus (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae), with notes on habitat and distribution, and a key to species Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Trémouilles,Edgardo R.; Michat,Mariano C.; Torres,Patricia L. M..
We revised the South American members of the genus Hydrovatus Motschulsky. Each of the three recognized species is diagnosed, with emphasis on diagnostic characters. A key summarizing the main differences is provided. To identify South American specimens of H. caraibus Sharp, they were compared with Central American specimens, including type material. Based on the material examined, H. caraibus is a species broadly distributed in Central and South America, with representatives of different areas separated by minor differences. The geographical distributions of the three species are considerably enlarged: H. crassulus Sharp and H. turbinatus Zimmermann are recorded for the first time from Paraguay, and H. caraibus is recorded for the first time from...

A new species of Temnocephala Blanchard (Platyhelminthes, Temnocephalida) ectosymbiont on creeping water bugs, Cryphocricos granulosus De Carlo (Hemiptera, Naucoridae) from southern Brazil Zoologia
Amato,José F. R.; Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,Suzana B..
Temnocephala minutocirrus sp. nov., an ectosymbiont on Cryphocricos granulosus De Carlo, 1967, is described from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. One hundred and nine naucorids were examined, of which 36 (33%) were positive for this species of Temnocephala Blanchard, 1849. In one sample of 94 creeping water bugs, 49 (52%) were 4th instar nymphs, 6% of which were infested; 45 (48%) were adults, either brachypterous (40 with 18 males and 22 females) or macropterous (5 with 1 male and 4 females), 67% of which were infested (29% males and 38% females). Temnocephalan eggs were found both ventrally and dorsally: fixed on coxae, trochanters, and along the sternum between fore middle, and hind pairs of legs; basal of the abdominal area; and on the...

Redescription of two land planarian species of Notogynaphallia Ogren & Kawakatsu (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Geoplaninae) and confirmation of the heterogeneity of the genus Zoologia
Carbayo,Fernando.
Notogynaphallia caissara (E.M. Froehlich, 1955) and N. fita (Froehlich, 1959) are redescribed. Both species are included in the so-called group 2 of E.M. Froehlich & Leal-Zanchet (2003), in Notogynaphallia, and are provided with a cephalic retractor muscle derived from the ventral longitudinal subepidermic muscle layer. A muscle retractor does not exist in the type-species of the genus. This is strong evidence of the morphological heterogeneity within the genus, as E.M. Froehlich & Leal-Zanchet (2003) previously proposed mainly based on characters of the reproductive organs.
