The temporal evolution of the demographic structure of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, Linnaeus 1758) and of the little tuna (Euthynnus alletteratus, Rafinesque 1810) by the Tunisian traps of Sidi Daoud and Monastir is studied during 3 periods (1979-1983; 1988-1992 and 1993-1997). This survey showed the two points of passive capture landing draw the bluefin tuna from two populations of different composition. The fish taken from Tunisian waters do not from a homogenous group of similar beings, since they result from a mixture of local Mediterrean and Atlantic forms. This conclusion was arrived at by Heldt (1929), and confirmed in 2004, by displacement studies indicated that, after reproduction, the adults (<100kg) remained in the Mediterranean, and that,... |

With the aim to characterize tthe soft-bottom macrofauna and its spatial and temporal distribution patterns in the Santa Marta area, a two years sampling program was performed at depths between 7 to 60 m. Density, biomass and diversity of the community were determined. The BIOENV method was applied in order to relate the distribution of the associations and the environmental variables (depth, turbidity, organic matter, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, organic phosphorus and median particle diameter). A density of 1499 indiv *m-2 and 10.9 g*m-2 wet biomass were obtained. The collected organisms belonged to six taxa: polychaetes, crustaceans, sipunculids, molluscs, bryozoans, and echinoderms; the first one was the most important in terms of abundance and... |

This Thesis contributes to elucidate the life cycle strategies of two copepod species, the medium-size clausocalanid Drepanopus forcipatus Giesbrecht, 1888 and the large calanid Calanus australis Brodsky, 1959, in relation to the environmental conditions in the southern Patagonian shelf (47°-55°S). This research was mainly carried out with samples collected in late summer/early autumn (March/April, 2004) onboard RV "Dr. E. L. Holmberg" (INIDEP, Mar del Plata). An additional sampling performed during early spring (October, 2005) with RV "Puerto Deseado" (CONICET) was also utilized. The present study was based on the following research questions: 1) Which is the available food for copepod populations by late summer? 2) Which is the relative contribution of... |

The "abadejo" is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although the capture was not very important, it has been increased in the last years. In this work, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological items were analyzed, basing on the data collected during cruises effected by R/V "Walther Herwing" and R/V "Shinkai Maru" in these waters during 1978/79. Winter and spring distribution patterns showed the highest concentrations located between 41º and 48º SL, specially on the slope. Summer distribution pattern showed the concentration areas located between 43º30' and 48º30' LS shifted rather to the coast when comparing to the previous one. During the winter, in... |

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |

This report contains the objectives, data collected and results from a hake assessment survey carried out in the Argentine Sea between 34° and 46° S, during July and August 1994, on board of the R/Vs "Dr. E. L. Holmberg" and "Cap. Oca Balda". The main objectives of the survey were: 1) to estimate total biomass and total abundance per age class; 2) to study the size and age composition; 3) to define the maturity ogive per size and age; 4) to quantitatively determine cannibalism and predation indexes. The area covered by the survey where 149 trawls and 184 oceanographic stations were performed was close to 100,440 nm2 . Hake biomass between 34° and 46° S was estimated in 1,105,284 tons and the confidence interval at 95. was ± 23.12. . Most of the biomass... |

The Patagonian cod (Salilota australis) inhabits the SW Atlantic from 38°S up to 55°S, as well as the Pacific Ocean from 40°S up to 57°S. The annual catches of this species by both the Argentine fleet and those operating around the Malvinas Islands have significantly increased during the decade 1990-2000, peaking to 16,556 t in 1996. After this, a marked decrease in landings was noticed, and during 2003 the catch was 7,924 t. Seasonal distribution, concentration grounds, and population structure of the Patagonian cod from the Argentine Sea are described, and the mean densities of the species are seasonally related to latitude, temperature and depth, on the basis of data from surveys carried out by the INIDEP research vessels in 1992 and 1993. Highest mean... |

Red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery. Analysis of catches, nominal effort and landings structure in 2011. A descriptive analysis of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) fishery within the Buenos Aires Coastal Ecosystem (BCE) and the Argentine continental shelf, between 34° S and 42° S, during 2011 was performed. The catches landed, of a total of 3,627 t, performed in a direct and incidental way by an heterogeneous fleet of 149 vessels belonging to five strata (Ia, Ib, Ic, IIa and IIb) in 1,527 fishing trips represented a 36.7% decrease as regards 2010. The spatiotemporal analysis allowed to determine that the highest yields of the species were obtained close to 50 m depth, that coincides with the highest surface temperatures in the area, that decrease in a... |
