Values based Supply chains for Mountain Products: the example of BioAlpin in Tyrol/Austria Growth processes are often problematic for small-scale farms as they may disturb the delicate balance of basic internal resources, like labor, buildings, machinery, land and animals. Most of these resources cannot be increased in linear processes and the smaller the unit the more problematic the task of realignment of resources becomes. Small-scale farmers often feel growth as enforced by outside factors, e.g. a market partner. Growing enterprises in processing and trading need more supply and obviously are not eager to deal with more small suppliers, as this tends to mean higher transaction costs and varying qualities. However, we find examples where dedicated... |

Relational factors between supply chain actors have been acknowledged to contribute significantly to competitiveness. With the example of the German market for organic apples the suitability of the concept of the Relational View for explaining competitiveness was investigated. Structured interviews were conducted with selected actors of the supply chain. Actors at all levels of the supply chain proved to be highly committed and described their business relations as satisfying and trustful. Strong vertical and horizontal collaboration was found. Thus, the Relational View proved to be highly suitable to explain competitiveness in the market for organic apples. |

The growth in organic and low-input farming practices is driven by both market demand for high quality, safe food, and European Union policy support, and these types of farming practices are considered in European Union policies for sustainable production, food quality, healthy life, and rural development. However, many constraints to the development of low-input and organic dairy farming supply chains have been identified, including economic, political, and technical constraints. In order for these types of supply chains to develop and provide further benefits to society, innovations are required to improve their sustainability. However, an innovation will only be taken up and result in desirable change if the whole supply chain accepts the innovation. In... |

Increasingly, food consumption occurs in out-of-home contexts, where organic food can also have a role to play. Public food services may be utilised to increase the sustainability of providing nutrition. Although school meals may be well suited to integrating organic food and sustainable nutrition concepts, school food provision systems are very different across Europe. This paper compares school food provision systems and their utilisation of organic food in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway, discussing how various strategies and instruments used for organic food procurement in school meals may increase organic food consumption. Using five analytical categories—(a) type of school food service, (b) degree of public financing, (c)... |

In order to develop policies for increasing the contribution of the farm base to the local economy, increased knowledge of the channels through which locally-grown organic produce passes into the local economy is required. This study will aim to identify issues relating to the uptake of organic produce with reference to data produced by a postal questionnaire of consumers (undertaken as part of a separate MAFF-funded project, code RE0107). The last 2 questions of this survey collected information relating to numbers of businesses selling organic produce and their reasons for doing so; information was also collected on reasons for not selling organic produce. Potential exists within this information and other information in the survey to carry out more... |

Short food supply chain (SFSCs) initiatives have developed throughout Europe as an alternative to the long industrialized chains characterizing the contemporary global food industry. They are often driven by small-scale actors belonging to different phases of the chain (producers, retailers, consumers) and rooted in specific territorial contexts. Innovative organizational models of SFSCs are attracting interest in the academic field (Jarosz, 2008, Khan and Prior, 2010, Aubry and Kebir, 2013) and beyond (RUAF, 2015). This work contributes to the debate with a focus on the logistics of SFSCs in urban and peri-urban areas across Europe, specifically on the role of local intermediaries in facilitating connections between urban consumers and peri-urban and... |
