The demand for organic trout is increasing, stressing the need for organic, vegetable feed ingredients as replacement for fish meal, as the principles of organic aquaculture encourage the development of feed that do not deplete global fish stocks. In addition, the organic code of practice does not allow addition of artificial amino acids to the feed, and optimization of the amino acid profile of organically based diets must therefore derive from the protein sources alone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the digestibility and growth performance of organic vegetable dietary ingredients as replacement for fish meal and fish oil in feed for organic rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Six iso-energetic and iso- nitrogenous diets were prepared,... |

The current agricultural operations cause a number of environmental and socio-economic problems and raise substantial ethical doubts. The call for the shift of the present agricultural paradigm and practices is acknowledged all across Europe. Ten years after the economic transition, the agricultural sector in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) still undergoes essential transformation. In spite of the policy efforts to restore the pre 90 inputs, low-external input agriculture prevails in most CEE countries. The transition to a market economy caused a huge price disparity between the agricultural commodities and agricultural inputs. The high prices of agri-chemicals and low prices of agricultural produce forced farmers to reduce agricultural inputs or refrain... |

The export of organic fruit and vegetables to the European Union might offer a great opportunity for Syrian farmers and exporters. Yet, the organic sector in Syria is comparatively young and only a very small area of fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV) is organically managed. To date, little is known about Syrian farmers’ attitudes towards organic fruit and vegetable production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the intentions and attitudes of Syrian farmers of FFV towards organic farming and the likelihood of converting their farms to organic production within the next five years. The study was based on a survey among 266 Syrian farmers. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used as theoretical framework and partial least squares structural... |

Soil samples were stored and baited in different ways in order to develop a bait method that could estimate the level of steinernematid nematodes in soil in a time efficient way. The method was based on incidence (proportion of samples with a given species of Steinernema). Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera) larvae were used as bait and it was concluded that: 1) Repeated baiting in a later period improved the bait result; 2) Extension of the bait periods from one to two weeks was not necessary; 3) The precision of the estimated incidence did not improve noteworthy by taking more than 60-80 samples; 4) The minimum time required to analyse one soil sample was 6 minutes. |

Systems theory differs from classic analytical science by producing statements in the context of a descriptive system rather than seeking to reduce a complex problematic situation to researchable entities. This paper analyses the validity and applicability of systems theory as a scientific approach towards organic farming. The world-views on which organic farming and systems theory build, respectively, are discussed and the methodological consequences of these world views are clarified. The world-view inherent in organic farming (the ontological level), as reflected in stewardship towards nature, the ethic of animal husbandry, and the cycling processes in nature, is harmonious with the underlying ideas of systems theory as regards a hierarchical structure... |

Well-established results in the current statistical literature imply that plant breeders should use incomplete block designs wherever spatial variability exists and the number of treatments is large. But the theoretical position does not indicate the recommendable number of cultivars in an incomplete block. In this study we used data from 28 official variety trials conducted in Finland during the period 2001-2005 to study theffect of block size on the efficiency of testing pairwise yield differences of barley cultivars and cultivar rankings. In previous trials some 6-7 cultivars have usually been included in one block. Our results imply that the efficiency of testing procedures could be improved by using a block size as small as 4-5. The results further... |

Organic farming has been dismissed as unscientific. This perception is often based on a lack of understanding of underlying concepts. The paper reviews the key theoretical bases of the organic approach in scientific terms and discusses the various methodologies used in this area. It argues that a holistic approach to scientific investigations is valid even if, at present, it is more of an aspiration than a reality. |

Ud over at give en oversigt over resultaterne i... |

Certified organic agriculture stipulates a range of principles and standards, which govern farmer practices. The recent global expansion of organic agriculture has raised new challenges for organic agriculture, particularly whether management practices in organic farms are subject to the forces of conventionalisation. We studied changes in agroecological practices in certified organic farms in China,Brazil and Egypt. The study takes departure in the conventionalisation hypothesis and the analysis is framed using organic and agroecological principles. The study focuses on agroecological design principles, inherent to organic agriculture, of diversity in crop production, pest, disease and weed management, and soil fertility management. The research design... |

This study investigates whether researchers’ perceptions of good research are in agreement with current research practice as reflected in Weed Research. A high degree of agreement is assumed to indicate progress. The instrument used to survey researchers perceptions was a questionnaire consisting of 28 items related to (1) research methodologies, (2) research priorities, (3) quality of publications, (4) future developments in technology and agriculture and (5) general attitudes to alternative and conventional agriculture. Questions about gender and personal research engagement were also laid down in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent out by e-mail to about 140 researchers on the mailing list of the EWRS – Physical and Cultural Weed Control... |

Facing global problems like food security, the unsustainable use of natural resources, the degradation of soils and biodiversity as well as climate change, international experts demand a strategy change in agriculture and in agricultural research. Such a change encompasses not only re-establishing principles like closing cycles in agro-ecosystems, making best use of regulating and supporting ecosystems services but also making use of indigenous or tacit knowledge of farmer communities in addition to technological progress. The reports of the “Millennium Ecosystem Assessment” and of the IAASTD highlighted the need for this change in 2005 and 2008. Influenced by these recommendations, the potential of organic food and farming systems have to be assessed for... |
