PARKS, POPULATION, AND RESETTLEMENT IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AgEcon
Stycos, J. Mayone; Duarte, Isis.
A survey of 139 men and 123 women in four communities bordering Los Haitises National Park in the Dominican Republic took place in late 1992. The survey followed a presidential decree ordering the army to clear the forest of people and cattle and to resettle a number of villages. The survey found that people admitted using the forest for firewood and cash crop cultivation. However, they were aware of the need to conserve the forest and expressed willingness to compromise on its use. They were less aware of park boundaries and did not understand the concept of a national park. Villagers welcomed rapid population growth, and women favor (and have) large families despite high rates of sterilization. Nearly everyone opposed resettlement and favored...

Traceability Adoption by Specialty Crop Producers in California AgEcon
Stuller, Zachary J.; Rickard, Bradley J..
Surveys were sent to specialty crop producers in California, predominantly grower-packer-shippers, during the first half of 2006 to better understand the motives for traceability adoption. The questions in our survey allowed respondents to consider the benefits of tracing. A representative tracing system for melons was developed and costs for the system were collected from industry sources. Values were assigned to the benefits of traceability based on the cost of the representative system, responses collected in our survey, and using Borda’s rule. Results suggest that litigation concerns and firm reputation are the key drivers for maintaining traceability.

A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI VÁLLALATI GAZDASÁGTAN FEJLŐDÉSE ÉS A MAI GYAKORLAT AgEcon
Szekely, Csaba.
The development of Hungarian agricultural business economics and management used to evolve in accordance with international leaders of the sector. On the other hand, a paradox situation has emerged in Hungary in the last two decades, in which such knowledge is only partially applied as a consequence of insufficient knowledge transfer and highly restructured agriculture. In the framework of an EU-6 research project, reviewing the agricultural risk management practices of some EU Member States, including Hungary, became possible. The study highlights those issues that are the most characteristic in terms of the level of information, management, marketing and finance. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the level of management of Hungarian agricultural...

The Ancillary Carbon Benefits of SO2 Reductions from a Small-Boiler Policy in Taiyuan, PRC AgEcon
Morgenstern, Richard D.; Krupnick, Alan J.; Zhang, Xuehua.
To reduce carbon emissions worldwide, it makes sense to consider the possibility of developed countries paying for carbon reductions in developing countries. Developing countries may be interested in such activities if the ancillary air pollution benefits are large. This paper reports on an RFF survey of the emissions benefits (and costs) of reducing sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from small, coal-burning boilers in Taiyuan, an industrial, northern Chinese city that recently banned uncontrolled coal combustion in certain small boilers in the downtown area. We find significant carbon benefits in percentage terms-on the order of 50% to 95% reduction-associated with this SO2 control policy, with large reduction potential elsewhere in Taiyuan and China. While...

Use of a Producer Survey to Reconcile Differences in Experiment Station Yield Estimates AgEcon
Duke, Jason C.; Epplin, Francis M..
Average producer practice reveals that the expected returns are greater from dual-purpose wheat grown for both forage and grain than for grain-only wheat. Variety trials report an 11 bushel per acre yield advantage and hence economic advantage for grain-only. Research was conducted to reconcile the inconsistency.

Public Support for Pollution Fee Policies for Motor Vehicles: Survey Results AgEcon
Krupnick, Alan J.; Harrington, Winston; Alberini, Anna.
In this paper we report on the results of a telephone survey conducted in Southern California during August and September 1996. The purpose of the survey was to inform respondents about a set of rather complex pricing policies designed to reduce motor vehicle emissions and to estimate respondent support for those policies. After receiving extensive information about these policies, respondents were polled on whether they would support, i.e., vote for, any or all of these options. The pollution fee survey elicited support for a plan that levied a fee on vehicles in the region, depending on the vehicle's emissions per mile and on the miles driven. The sample was then split in two, with half the respondents being told that a portion of the revenues would be...

Organic wheat farming in Australia: issues farmers face AgEcon
Birzer, Todd; Badgery, Warwick.
Organic wheat farmers in Australia face a number of unique challenges, and an in-depth understanding of these challenges is an important first step for government agencies, universities and other groups interested in promoting organic agriculture. This research was designed to develop a qualitative understanding of the biggest transition, cultivation, market and other issues faced by organic wheat farmers in Australia. Data gathering was conducted with a series of one-to-one interviews. The top challenge identified was rain, water availability and soil moisture. This challenge places unique risks on organic farmers because of additional cultivation cycles and subsequent delayed seeding. A second key issue was weed management, with particularly tough issues...

In the Hungarian agriculture private farms have a determining role. Since Hungary has became a European Union member country, in certain markets the performance and efficiency of these private farms are directly matched with the agronomics of other member countries. Considering this competitive situation when assessing private economies that are traditionally agricultural, based on a survey with personal interview and questionnaire the research focused on what characterizes the production structure of farms, which parameters describe equipment supply, as even so how the efficiency of soil, technical equipment and capital, which are the relevant resources of the agricultural production. Willingness of cooperation was also researched, focused on not only...

IMPACTS OF POLICY REFORM ON HILL FARM INCOMES IN UK AgEcon
Acs, Szvetlana; Dallimer, Martin; Hanley, Nick; Armsworth, Paul R..
Hill farming in UK is experiencing very difficult economic circumstances and many farmers rely on subsidies provided by the government for a large fraction of their income. The Peak District National Park is used as a case study to examine how farmers might respond to current policy changes – in particular, the move from area- and headage-based payments to the Single Farm Payment. The objective of this paper is thus to develop production models that predict how farmers will respond to changing policy framework conditions. For this purpose socio-economic surveys were carried out on 44 sample farms. Based on these surveys six representative farm linear programming models was developed, which represent typical farm types in the uplands in the Peak District....

Characteristics of environmentally conscious production behaviour in agricultural waste management AgEcon
Kormosne-Koch, Krisztina.
When measuring environmentally conscious behaviour and determining its variables, focus often lies only on consumers, but environmental conservation requires not only the consumers’ but also the producers’ input. After defining environmentally conscious behaviour, I utilized the market research method to determine how participating in agri-environmental programs and subsidies affects producers’ environmental consciousness and waste management behaviour. The research result indicates that participation in agri-environmental programs develops producers’ environmental sensitivity, and improves their environmentally conscious behaviour, and this even holds true for waste management, which is not directly not subsidized by the programs.

MARKETING LEHETŐSÉGEK AZ ÁLLATI EREDETŰ HUNGARIKUMOK TERMÉKPÁLYÁJÁN AgEcon
Szigeti, Orsolya; Szente, Viktoria; Mathe, Attila; Szakaly, Zoltan.
Key point of the survey is represented by the fact that Hungarian agricultural products had to face turbulent market conditions, heavy concurrency and sharp import competition in the European Union. A possible way of keeping or strengthening market positions is to acquaint the values of native, traditional and region-specific products (Hungaricums). Present survey focuses on analyzing the marketing possibilities of Hungarian Grey cattle and Mangalica pig along with their products. Representatives of companies producing, processing and trading mangalica and grey cattle products were interviewed and in order to define the consumers’ preferences focus group interviews were taken. Interest of consumers for such products grew by leaps and bounds last year but...

The Role of Trust and Risk Aversion in Farmers' Used Machinery Transactions AgEcon
Roe, Brian E.; Batte, Marvin T.; Diekmann, Florian.
Results of a nationally representative survey of US farmers link previously validated survey measures of risk aversion and interpersonal trust to farmers’ intended use of online venues for transacting used equipment. Other factors affecting online purchase propensity includes the quality of farmers’ relationships with local equipment dealerships. Understanding the factors that impact farmers’ use of internet market venues is crucial as rural internet penetration deepens, farm equipment needs grow more specialized and local offline markets thin. These results may also help explain past observations of severe discounting of used farm equipment sold in online venues.

Agricultural Price Seasonality and Market Failure: Examining the Net Seller Household and the Net Benefit Ratio Definition AgEcon
Vergez, Antonin.
On the basis of a household typology distinguishing between net sellers, net buyers and self sufficient, the Net Benefit Ratio (NBR), defined by Deaton (1989), is used to approximate households' first order welfare variations when price change. In this paper, we discuss both the typology's criteria and the classic formula of NBR, since they are based a) on produced and consumed quantities rather than real marketed volumes and b) on a unique selling and buying price for all surveyed households. We propose another definition of a net seller and a new NBR expression allowing the analyst to take into account market failures (MF) and price seasonality (PS), which are two constancies in developing countries. We use two sets of data (from Mexico and Mali), to...

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF SMALL FOOD MANUFACTURING AND RETAILING BUSINESSES AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
The 1998 Survey of Small Business Finances provides robust information on the financing of small businesses including an overview of their firm's organization, financial characteristics, and credit use. Information from the survey is used in this study to compare the financial characteristics of food manufacturing and retailing small businesses. On average, both food manufacturing and food retailing small businesses had positive financial characteristics. Although they were only marginally profitable and liquid, they were highly solvent. Accounts receivable and inventory comprise nearly half of food manufacturers' total assets and a third of food retailers' assets. By most financial measures, food retailers were statistically smaller than food...

What are ‘true’ loyal consumers in the food sector? Insights from an empirical study AgEcon
Wettstein, Nadine; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Because loyal consumers are less likely to switch to competitors and because they are more tolerant to increases in price than non-loyal consumers, one of the main aims of firms is the “generation” of loyal consumers. But what is consumer loyalty? The marketing literature emphasises that for “true loyalty” it is important to consider both consumers' purchasing pattern (i.e. repurchases) as well as the underlying attitudes of the consumers. Thus, true loyalty includes both a behavioural (purchase) component, which results in repeated purchases, and an attitudinal component, which results in a dispositional commitment to a product, a brand, or a company, and associates a unique value to it. However, considering the characteristics of food products and the...

Grower perceptions of the impact of protein premiums and discounts for wheat AgEcon
Petersen, Elizabeth H.; Fraser, Rob W..
This paper presents results of a survey of Western Australian wheat growers designed to elicit perceptions of the impact of protein premiums and discounts for wheat on income, utility and off-farm risk management. The results indicate that a grower’s perception of the scheme’s impact on expected income and utility depends on that grower’s expected protein level. Additionally, growers do not perceive protein premiums and discounts to have affected the variance of income, or their willingness-to-pay for a forward contract. These latter findings are contrary to previous studies of actual rather than perceived effects. However, the perceptions of growers are understandable given that the scheme’s effect on the variance of income is small relative to its effect...
