Effects of European organic farming policies at sectoral and societal levels Organic Eprints
Nicholas, P; Jeffreys, I; Lampkin, N.
The paper explores the drivers for organic farming uptake and undertakes a preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of organic farming policy against a set of 24 criteria, in a number of case study countries. Organic farming support policies were not solely responsible as external factors, such as conventional market performance and food scares, interacted with policy measures in influencing organic farming uptake rates. Organic farming schemes and measures out performed alternative agri-environment schemes in a number of criteria, such as GM traceability, natural resource conservation, diversification of farm practice and products, food quality and safety and biodiversity impacts. However, on the basis of the data it is not possible to conclude whether...

Organic Agriculture in Austria Organic Eprints
Vogl, C. R.; Darnhofer, I..
Organic farming has a long history in Austria, not least due to the fact that Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the bio-dynamic farming movement, was an Austrian. Currently approximately 10% of Austrian farms are certified organic, the highest percentage in the EU.

Bulgaria. A relatively short organic history Organic Eprints
Apostolov, Stoylko; Heeb, Marlene.
Organic agriculture in Bulgaria has a relatively short history. The concept of organic agriculture was only introduced after the fall of the communist regime in 1990, when the process of land restitution started. Below is an account of developments over the following thirteen years and a report on the current status of organic agriculture in the country.

Modelling risk-based inspections in EU organic certification: data requirements and analysis tools Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zorn, Alexander; Lippert, Christian; Dabbert, Stephan; Zanoli, Raffaele.
A Risk Based Inspection (RBI) scheme is a planning tool used to develop the optimum plan for the execution of inspection activities. Organic certification system could benefit from the implementation of RBIs in terms of higher effectiveness, i.e. trustability, and lower transaction costs for organic operators. Data from certification bodies provide basic information about non-compliances and structural aspects of organic operators. Here we propose a methodological approach to risk analysis modelling, based on discrete choice models and Bayesian networks, both aiming at the identification of key risk factor in the organic certification process in the European Union.

Report on evaluation of the revision of council regulation (EEC) NO 2092/91, import regime in two exporting non-EU countries (TR, CH) and on an international level Organic Eprints
Abay, Canan; Karahan Uysal, Ozlem; Miran, Bülent; Boyacı, Murat; Huber, Beate; Stolze, Matthias.
This report provides an evaluation of the new EU import regulation for organic products (Council Regulation (EC) 834/2007, Commission Regulation (EC) No 1235/2008). To ensure that the evaluation addresses the issues and concerns of the stakeholders affected by the new import regulation and to increase the use of the evaluation results for upcoming decisions, this evaluation was organised as a stakeholder evaluation approach. Based on the results from two national workshops in third countries (Turkey and Switzerland) and from one international workshop, the report concludes in policy recommendations to improve the import system for organic products as well as the organic sector as a whole.

Book Review: Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
'Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday' presents an overview of Steiner’s life work. Steiner was a pioneer of New Age thinking. He had a prodigious appetite for work, and his output was prolific as well as diverse. He presented over 5105 lectures and he authored 354 books. Alchemy encapsulates Steiner’s oeuvre including architecture, furniture, art, painting, sculpture, dance, jewellery, typography, medicine, education, and agriculture. As the Foreword states: “Rudolf Steiner was one of the most influential - yet most controversial - reformers of the 20th century”. In the year before his untimely death, Steiner laid the foundations of biodynamic agriculture. 'Alchemy' is a timely retrospective coinciding with the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of...

Nové požadavky unie na kontrolu Organic Eprints
Urban, Jiri.
Proto realizoval Bioinstitut o. p. s. Olomouc projekt Vývoj metodiky pro využívání a hodnocení analýz pesticidů v kontrole ekologického zemědělství v České republice (odběr vzorků, evaluace a interpretace). The role of organic entrepreneurship and innovation for poverty alleviation and development Organic Eprints
Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer.
Agricultural production from small farms is currently meeting the food needs of one-third of the world population. Agriculture in Asia is characterized by small holders of farmland with an average size of less than 2 hectares (80% of total farms). These small-scale farmers are challenged by increasing cost of production and decreasing profitability. They cannot afford high input agriculture, such as available chemical solutions for their crops and therefore, by default, most of them are operating as organic farmers but yet they are not fully organic. There is ample opportunity to help these marginal farms become fully organic and in turn profitable enterprises by introducing organic farming practices. To do this there is a need for policies and...

Multi-elemental fingerprinting of plant tissue by semi-quantitative ICP-MS and chemometrics Organic Eprints
Laursen, Kristian Holst; Hansen, Thomas Hesselhøj; Persson, Daniel Pergament; Schjørring, Jan Kofod; Husted, Søren.
The multi-elemental capacity of Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is rarely fully utilized in traditional full-quantitative analysis. The main obstacles are limited availability of multi-elemental standards and the need for time-consuming external calibrations. In this study, a novel semi-quantitative quadrupole ICP-MS based method for multi-elemental fingerprinting of plant tissue was developed as a high-throughput alternative to full-quantitative analysis. The main analytical objectives were low data acquisition time (<60 seconds), detailed coverage of the atomic mass range from 7Li to 238U and discrimination power similar to full-quantitative analysis based on chemometric data analysis. The method was tested on grains of different...

Visie gezondheid en welzijn biologische landbouwhuisdieren Organic Eprints
Smolders, Gidi; Bestman, Monique; Eijck, Ineke.

Harmonizing Jhum (Shifting Cultivation) with PGS Organic Standards in Northeast India: Key features and characteristics of Jhum for process harmonization Organic Eprints
Darlong, Vincent.
Shifting cultivation, known as ‘jhum’ in Northeast India is widely distributed upland slash and burn agricultural system. Efforts to address jhum remained challenging tasks, more so due to its shortening cycle but continued livelihoods dependency for a large population of upland communities. With organic foods gaining popularity, harmonizing jhum with Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) organic standards may provide enhanced opportunities for improved livelihoods and environmental security in Northeast India. The paper explores these opportunities and focuses on the features and characteristics of jhum that would require in meeting the PGS organic standards.

Situation Analysis and Strategy for Replacing Cell Fusion Cultivars in Organic Systems Organic Eprints
The report was prepared by the members of the IFOAM-Organics International Working Group on Replacing Cell Fusion Cultivars: Kirsten Arp, Diane Bowen (Chair), Bernd Horneburg, Andre Leu, Rodel Maghirang, John Navazio, Gebhard Rossmanith, Michael Sligh, Yiching Song, and with additional support from Monika Messmer. History of the initiative In 2002 the first IFOAM draft standards were set for organic plant breeding. They stated that only breeding techniques on plant level are compatible for organic principles. This implies that from the process point of view, plant breeding techniques that operate on cell tissue or directly at DNA level violate the integrity of life. Respecting the concept of integrity of life also means that organic agriculture aims to...
