Thanks to the courtesy of Drs. Boschma and Brongersma the author has been privileged to examine a large series of West African amphibians from the collections of the Royal Museum of Natural History in Leiden. Of the comparatively easily accessible parts of Africa, Liberia is probably the least known, in so far as its herpetological fauna is concerned, and consequently it is not surprising to find that the present material contains much of interest. The following notes concern some of the more obvious points which arise out of the material examined and do not purport to be in any way exhaustive. The author is indebted not only to the gentlemen already mentioned, but also to M. Angel and Mr. Loveridge who have most generously placed at his disposal material... |

Discordant bedding is being reported with increasing frequency from rocks of almost any grade of metamorphism. It is, usually without much discrimination, cited as evidence of sedimentary origin or even as an indication of the sequence of deposition. In the present paper examples are given of discordant structures simulating both deltaic and torrential cross lamination but on closer inspection obviously due to differential stretching and variable orientation of cleavage in a thinly laminated quartzphyllite which has been isoclinally folded and subsequently flattened in the bedding plane. Microfabric analysis of micaceous cleavage planes can be a valuable aid in the distinction between discordant structures of sedimentary and deformational nature, and the... |

In 2008 the Lowland Hybrid Shield-fern, Polystichum ×bicknellii (Christ) Hahne, was recorded for the first time in the Netherlands in a forest (‘Kuinderbos’) in the Province of Flevoland. A... |

A revision is given of the Oriental genus Matapa Moore. Two species, M. intermedia and M. deprivata, and one subspecies, M. intermedia nigrita, are described as new. A key to the nine species known at present is provided. Figures are given of male and female genitalia, and of forewings of males. The phylogeny of the genus and its geographic history are discussed. It is shown that three monophyletic groups can be distinguished, which all originated in mainland Southeast Asia. The occurrence of one species in India is the result of a geologically speaking recent invasion. There are indications of a double colonization of Celebes from the Philippines. |

The small collection of Brenthidae obtained in Liberia by the well-known and successfull travellers Büttikofer, Sala and Stampfli, and submitted to me by Mr. C. Ritsema, amounts to 27 specimens, all belonging to described species. Nevertheless I thought it useful to publish the following list as it throws some further light upon the distribution of the African Brenthidae. 1. Zemioses porcatus Pascoe, Journ. of Entom. Mees, G.F.. |
INTRODUCTION In my recent revision of the Belonidae (Mees, 1962) a number of problems had to remain unsolved because of lack of material, and in particular because of a number of named forms the type specimens had not been available. The revision was called "preliminary" for that reason. Thanks to the co-operation of colleagues in several countries I have been able, on a round-the-world tour which lasted from February to August, 1962, to examine nearly all the types of what I had previously had to regard as species dubiae, and other type specimens, which show that in a few instances the synonymy presented in my paper is erroneous. A serious error in the key also became obvious (see under Belone punctulata). Though, inevitably, a few problems remain to be... |

Six new Cladoniae for the Netherlands are mentioned and their main characteristics described. Cladonia cenotea (Ach). Schaer., C. stellaris (Opiz) Pouzar et Vezda, C. subcervicornis (Vain.) DuRietz and C. symphycarpia Fik. are recorded from a single find. The first two were already labelled correctly, but not yet published. C. gonecha (Ach.) Asah. and C. rei Schaer. have been recognized by chemical methods from several localities, humous sites then C. rei seems to prefer less acid and less C. subulata (L.) Wigg., which closely resembles it. |

The emperor moth Saturnia pavonia in the southern part of the Netherlands: distribution, phenology and food (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) Saturnia pavonia is a large and beautiful moth. It was thought that the species was becoming rare in the Netherlands. In the period 1986-2006 the species was surveyed in the province of Noord-Brabant and the northern and middle part of the province of Limburg. It was shown that the emperor moth was present in 40% of the 250 investigated 5 km squares, especially on heath land and in forests. It became clear that the species, however conspicuous in appearance, has a largely hidden lifestyle. Although the males can be seen flying over heath land, most are hidden in the vegetation. Furthermore the males fly only in the... |

Herr Edw. |

In NW. Borneo thick series of Tertiary sediments occur which are rich in fossil pollen and spores. The majority of these plant microfossils were derived from the various types of tropical lowland vegetation such as mangrove (Muller, 1964), mixed peat swamp forest and mixed Dipterocarp forest. Some pollen types, however, can be traced to microtherm elements in the montane vegetation. As these cannot have migrated through tropical lowlands, their past distribution is of special interest. It is the purpose of this note to review the stratigraphic occurrence of these montane pollen types and discuss briefly the phyto-geographical significance of the data. The sediments which contain the microfossils can be roughly divided in a near coastal and deltaic facies,... |
