Background: Bioethanol is produced mainly from sugar cane and corn. In the last years it has been subject of debate due to the effects in food prices and land use change. The use of lignocellulosic materials for bioethanol production, such as agroindustry, forestry and municipal residues, wood or dendroenergetic species, has been proposed as a sustainable way for producing this biofuel. The design of a sustainable process for producing bioethanol requires a methodological approach whereby economical, environmental and social criteria are systematically integrated from the early stages of process design. Results: Until now a methodology for guiding the design of a sustainable process for bioethanol production is not... |

THE structure and nature of the uppermost oceanic mantle and crust has been, and still is, the subject of a major international research effort . Yet the direct field evidence known to us on this subject, whether obtained by drilling in the I.P.O.D. oceanic crust programme² or by submersible surveying in the Famous programme , has been either very incomplete or limited to the upper part of layer 2. As a result, the problem of the comparison between ophiolites and oceanic crust is still debated . We report here the preliminary results of an in situ geological survey in which we have sampled and observed what we believe to be an almost complete geological section starting a few kilometres... |

Numerous works are reported in literature concerning the biofilm growth on surfaces in seawater but the understanding of the adhesion mechanisms in the first steps of immersion is still subject to investigations. A knowledge of the chemical composition and of the kinetics of conditioning layer formation is a central requirement for a sound scientific understanding of biofilm growth. Due to its complexity and to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, this research asks for the collaboration between the fields of material science, surface analyses, chemistry, marine microbiology and biochemistry. The first steps of biofilm formation on 316L stainless steels immersed in natural sea... |

Geomorphologic and stratigraphic research, supported by radiocarbon datings, give us an approach to reconstruction of the evolution of Mar Chiquita lagoon. The estuarine body originated during the regressive phase that followed the transgressive "maximum". After this maximum, a short rapid fall of the sea level restricted the estuarine environments which resulted in the formation of the lagoon. Predominant landforms are related to the regressive phase. Mar Chiquita lagoon has a mean surface of 46 km super(2) and a drainage basin of about 10,000 km. It is subject to significant salinity variations. Hydrogeological investigations show the influent character of the water table in relation to the lagoon. The water table rise... |

As noted in Dr L.G.M. Baas Becking’s Postscript to Mr van Bemmel’s article in Chronica Naturae Vol. 104, part 4, the new systematics has not been entirely neglected by botanists. I would like to put a further botanical vieuwpoint on this subject. Firstly, I suggest that there is no sharp distinction between the old systematics and the new; secondly, I would emphasize that systematics of the primary descriptive type are an essential basis for the new systematics, and that we are still a long way from completeness in our primary systematic study of Malaysian plants. Systematics of the primary descriptive type need not be out of touch with modern scientific thought. The field botanist in the tropics cannot regard the |

INTRODUCTION The Blattid fauna of the Malayan subregion is very rich, accordingly since the earliest period of orthopterology students of Blattids have described and mentioned specimens from this region. Consequently the literature on Malayan Blattidae is greatly scattered, and though some of the authors did a considerable amount of work in compiling the most important contributions on the present subject, there is still much to be done in unravelling synonymy and distinguishing generic units and subfamilies. Brunner (1865) already described a great number of Malayan Blattidae. The descriptions of new species by Walker (1868, 1869 and 1871) are very vague and full of mistakes, giving rise to a great deal of confusion.... |

INTRODUCTION The present paper contains notes on some recent cats in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, as well as descriptions of the fossil Felidae in the "Collectie Dubois", Leiden, which its Director Prof. Dubois entrusted to me. The fossils were collected in Java 1) by Prof. Eug. Dubois during his searches for remains of the precursor of man, and with the intention to gather data about the geological age and ecology of this precursor (cf. Dubois, 1888). The age of the deposits from which the fossil cats were collected, has been much discussed. A review of the literature (up to 1931) on this subject has been given by Van Es (1931), who concludes that the Trinilfauna must be referred to... |

Arckenhausen, J.C.P. (1784-1855) The draftsman from Goslar, Germany, who was in the service of C.L. Blume, from 1829 till 1832 or probably later. He worked up many of the drawings Blume had brought from Bogor, for the Flora Javae, mostly vol. 1 and 2, fewer vol. 3 and 4. In a book by H.G. Griep e.a., published by the Museumsverein Goslar (1977), details are given, and several fine reproductions. Blume, C.L. (1796-1862) The botanist for Java, first director of the Bogor Botanic Gardens, and founder of the Rijksherbarium, is the subject of a typewritten study by A. den Ouden: C.L. Blume, periode 1826-1832, 136 + xii p. It is a preliminary paper (in Dutch) for a Ph.D. thesis. Author delved into various archives and came up... |

This monograph deals with the systematics and phylogeny of the genus Pyrrosia (Polypodiaceae). It is one of the results of the Polypodiaceae-project that is being carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hennipman (State University, Utrecht). With this treatment of Pyrrosia, the group of the Platycerioid ferns (sometimes regarded as a subfamily) will be completed. The total number of genera in this group is reduced to two: Platycerium and Pyrrosia. Other publications dealing with this group are Hennipman & Roos (1982), dealing with Platycerium; and Ravensberg & Hennipman (1986), dealing with the former genera Drymoglossum and Saxiglossum, now in Pyrrosia. Together with Hennipman & Ravensberg’s account this forms the first complete account... |

Modern oyster culture began its development in the second part of the nineteenth century. Beginning in Europe it gradually spread over all the world’s oyster regions. Locally oyster cultural methods acquired a high degree of technical specialisation, recently even including chemical control of oyster diseases. A steadily increasing stream of scientific and technical papers, dealing with oyster biology and oyster culture, accompanied this development, and already numbers several thousands of publications. If closely related industries, such as cattle-breeding, horticulture, and agriculture, are compared with it, it is clear that one of the basic problems of oyster culture must be the oyster’s nutrition. Without a detailed knowledge of this |

From the leaves of barley, Hordeum vulgare, one new flavone C-glucoside and three known flavone glucosides were isolated and characterized by 1H, 13C NMR and MALDITOF-MS. The novel flavone C-glucoside was isovitexin 7-O-b-(6’’’-O-(E)-p-coumaroyl)glucoside and the known compounds were isovitexin 7-O-b-(6’’’-O-(E)-feruloyl)glucoside, isoorientin 7-O-b-(6’’’-O-(E)-feruloyl)glucoside and tricin 7-O-b-glucoside. The sum of all the flavone glycosides and soluble phenolic acids in the leaves decreased with increased rate of plant nutrients given in animal manure and with increased crop yield. All major phenylpropanoids showed the same general response to nutrient level. The concentration of nitrogen in the leaves was not directly related to nutrient application... |
