TNPC 5 is a dedicated software aimed to assist Calcified Structure interpretation, financed by the French institute IFREMER. Several years have been necessary to develop this software. The project begun in 1994 with Hervé Troadec's work, then other people contributed to it such as Ronan Fablet, Hélène de Pontual and André Ogor. TNPC provides several features that will be explained in details in this documentation : -Manage databases of images and associated data, -Batch processes on CS images, -Image acquisition with automatic stage, scanners, mosaics, -Save predefined data (radials, intensity curves) and user data (for example age interpretation). TNPC is based on the Visilog 6™ platform. |

General introduction: The red mullet is among the fish that are the most popular and that have been known of for the longest amount of time. The Greeks and the Romans have left us in their literature famous pages in which they praise the quality and beautiful colours of their gurnards and their mulles. Also, the skin of this fish has been very popular since earliest antiquity: It is said that for the Romans, a beautiful fish was worth more than the man who had caught it! Moreover, at feasts, a red mullet was displayed in a vase to amuse the guests with the changes of colour (Bloch, 1793). The red rock mullet (Mullus surmuletus) is a benthic fish, which means it lives near the sea bottom. It is geographically present in the Atlantic Ocean from the coasts... |

The ICES Planning Group on Commercial Catch, Discards and Biological Sampling (PGCCDBS) identified the need of a seabass Dicentrarchus labrax) otolith exchange to take place in 2013. It was the second exchange after that’s of 2011. The IFREMER institute coordinated this exchange. A total of 223 fish from the bay of Biscay (ICES area : VIII, N=29), the Eastern English Channel (ICES area : VIId, N=149) and the North Sea (ICES area : IV, N=45) was sampled onboard French research vessels (Gwen-Drez and Thalassa) during 3 international surveys (EVHOE, CGFS and IBTS). The length range of the fish was between 26 and 71 cm, with mean 42.3 cm. For each fish, the Sagittae otoliths and few scales were used to compare the age estimation between the both calcified... |

Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)... |

France and Canada have been working closely together for numerous years under the governance of The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) that regulates fisheries in the Northwest Atlantic. This workshop was the first step to achieve greater agreement in the estimation of age from calcified pieces between the scientific experts from those 2 countries. The goal of this project is to realize a calibration of the estimation of ages from cod (Gadus morhua) between France and Canada in order to optimize the precision of the data supplied by those countries for stock assessment purposes. There has been in the past an internal workshop for Atlantic Canada in 1997 on ageing fish and numerous workshops for Northeast Atlantic, more precisely for the... |

There were an exchange and a workshop in 2009 of Red mullet Mullus barbatus and Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus (WKACM). The Otolith Exchange Scheme 2011 was the second exercise for the Red mullet Mullus barbatus and Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus. 5 readers participated in this exchange. The images collection (n=540) came from the Bay of Biscay, the Balearic Islands, the Southern Spain and the Southern Adriatic sea. 175 Mullus surmuletus and 202 Mullus barbatus have been examined to all Institutes. Among 540 images, there were 377 otoliths and 163 scales. 2 images sets have been realised for Mullus surmuletus in Balearic Islands and for Mullus barbatus in the Southern Spain to compare the age estimation between both calcified pieces. Results... |

Age, growth and mortality of the Starry weever Trachinus radiatus were studied for the first time from 214 individuals collected in the Gulf of Tunis between February 2014 and January 2016. The significant relationship between length-weight was observed for males (a = 0.011, b = 2.992, R2 = 0.981, n = 77) and females (a = 0.010, b = 3.036, R² =0.957, n = 109). Age was estimated by the observation of otoliths transverse thin sections. Age of individuals ranged from 1 to 15 years. The precision was measured by two age estimations from two experts and indicated a good agreement between them (PA = 85.6%, CV = 3.8% and IAPE = 4.1%). The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy model were TL∞ = 38.41 cm, W∞ = 507.47 g, K = 0.3396 year-1, t0 = 0 year for males... |
