English Organic Producer Survey 2013 Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L; Padel, Susanne; Lampkin, Nic.
This report summarises the results of a survey carried out with English organic producers in November and December 2013 as part of the Organic Data Network Project. There are approximately 2724 English organic producers and 223 of these participated in the survey, a response rate of just over 8%. The sample is not representative of the total population of English organic producers, see the data collection and analysis section for more details, but gives a snapshot of the situation for a large number of producers. The survey covered a range of farm types, though completed surveys showed greater coverage of beef and sheep and under-coverage of cereal holdings. The geographical distribution showed a slight under-coverage of the east of the country....

Local and/or Organic: A balancing of values for producers and consumers Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
The poster explores the meaning of organic and local food and how closely they are related in the mind of consumers and producers of organic food, drawing on focus group discussions and laddering interviews with 181 consumers and 33 producers. The results show that both groups associate organic food with local trade and see this as an important value. It is concluded that in the complex organic food networks both producers and consumer have to balance localness with other values and constraints when making decisions about where to buy or where to sell their organic products.

UK farmers’ transition pathways towards agroecological farm redesign: evaluating explanatory models Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Levidov, Les; Pearce, Bruce.
Although the organic conversion process has been much studied, farm-level transitions to agroecosystems are less well understood. What transition pathways do they take? How can (or does) farmers’ learning help to make such changes? What support measures can (or do) facilitate such learning? To answer such questions, a UK study identified farmers undergoing an agroecological transition and compared their practices with two prevalent models. As regards the Efficiency – Substitution – Redesign (ESR) model, our case-study farms had all three changes, but they were rarely sequential; agroecosystem redesign did not follow from Efficiency or Substitution measures, which readily provide endpoints rather than transitional stages. As regards the ‘trigger events’...

Odefey, Lars; Berner, Anja; Offermann, Frank; Gerrard, Catherine L; Padel, Susanne; Lampkin, Nic.
The report is part of the project 'Farm Accountancy Cost Estimation and Policy Analysis of European Agriculture' (FACEPA). The overall aim of this report is to contrast organic and conventional forms of commodity production in terms of costs and environmental performance. Specific objectives are to apply the General Cost of Production Model (GECOM) developed in the FACEPA project to organic farms, to compare GECOM results for organic farming to data from other national studies as part of a (quasi-)validation, to discuss production costs in organic farming in the light of the structure of the organic farming sector and the respective policy environment in selected EU Member States, and to explore the potential of FADN systems for deriving environmental...

Vieweger, Anja; Häring, Anna Maria; Padel, Susanne; Döring, Thomas F.; Ekert, Stefan; Lampkin, Nicolas; Murphy-Bokern, Donal; Otto, Kristin.
In 2001, the German Federal Government established the Federal Scheme for Organic Agriculture (BÖL). The goal was to improve the professionalism of organic farming in Germany; to support sustained growth in production of organic food; and to stimulate a corresponding growth in the market for organic food. The paper presents results of an evaluation carried out by an international team in 2012. Our evaluation focused in particular on all research initiated and completed in period 2003 to 2010. The overall aim of the evaluation was to assess the relevance and impact of the research in relation to the BÖL’s goals, the effectiveness of the deployment of the research funding resources, and the efficiency of programme management. Recommendations relate to...

Preliminary comments on Title II of the EC Proposal for a new Council regulation on organic production Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo F.; Padel, Susanne.
In response to the conclusions of the European Action Plan for organic food and farming the European Commission has adopted a proposal for a new Council regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products. Although the aim of the new regulation is to improve clarity for both consumers and farmers, stakeholders have raised questions and expressed concerns on various issues of the proposed regulation (for example at the stakeholder conference held on March 27, 2006 by the European Parliament). In order to ensure the most relevant focus for research in Organic Revision, the project has nominated three contested areas that need to be further analysed. Following this refocusing the project (Alrøe and Padel) has provided preliminary comments...

The use of Farm Business Survey data to compare the environmental performance of organic and conventional farms Organic Eprints
Gerrard, CL; Moakes, Simon; Padel, Susanne.
This paper considers two main questions: Is it possible to use Farm Business Survey (FBS) data to derive well-established environmental indicators and can these FBS derived indicators also provide a reasonable comparison of the environmental performance of organic and conventional farms? The results suggest that the indicators can be obtained from FBS data and that the majority of the indicators provided meaningful results, despite some data limitations within the FBS dataset. The comparison of organic with conventional FBS data in the UK suggests that organic farms have lower fertiliser and crop protection costs (as would be expected) but that differences in feed costs, stocking density and cropping diversity were dependent upon farm type. This research...

Setting and reviewing standards for organic farming Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
One of the cornerstones of organic farming is the fact that it is governed by clear standards which are legally protected in many parts of the world, but there is concern that the current certification system does not fully safeguard the objectives and principles of the movement and encourage further improvements in sustainability. The chapter provides a brief history of organic standard development, and introduces the values and principles of organic farming that have guided this process. The chapter discusses advantages and disadvantages of the different types of rules currently used to achieve common objectives, such as prohibitions or obligations to use specified inputs and practices. The chapter explores whether trends in sustainability assessment...
