EcoOrchard – collecting existing knowledge and generating new knowledge on functional biodiversity of organic orchards Organic Eprints
Sigsgaard, Lene; Warlop, Francois; Herz, Annette; Tchamitchian, Marc; Pfiffner, Lukas; Kelderer, Markus; Jamar, Laurent; kruzynska, Dorota; Korsgaard, Maren; tasin, Marco; Ozoliņa-Pole, Laura.
Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. EcoOrchard, a CORE Organic Plus project (2015-18) aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use Functional AgroBiodiversity (FAB) successfully in orchards. This includes experimental trials in seven countries on the potential of inter-row flower strips for control of key pests and natural enemy augmentation, the establishment of the EBIO-Network as a European-wide network of stakeholders for collecting, sharing and improving scientific and practical knowledge and experience in FAB...

Biodiversity in Organic Horticulture – an Indicator for Sustainability and a Tool for Pest Management Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Conservation and enhancement of biodiversity are mentioned in the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) standards and in all national guidelines as essential pillars for organic agriculture. Recent reviews show that organic agriculture enhances the number of species and the abundance of many taxa (plants, birds, mammals, earthworms, arthropods, soil microbes), compared with conventional agriculture. Considering the benefits for sustainability, a multi-criteria analysis shows that organic agriculture not only improves biodiversity but also has positive effects on soil (e.g., soil erosion, structure, biological activity), water (e.g., no pesticide residues) and climatic factors (e.g., air pollution). In organic horticulture,...

Wildflower strips to reduce lepidopteran pests in cabbage crops Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk; Schlatter, Christian; Lichtenhahn, Martin.
Vegetable production systems are highly intensive and the periodic cultivations lead to un-favourable conditions for natural enemies. Using non-crops it is possible to create ecological infra-structure offering suitable food for natural enemies, and shelter from adverse conditions. On four organic farms in Western-Switzerland, we have tested in cabbage crops if wildflower strips are an appropriate tool to reduce lepidopteran pests. Analyses of wildflower strips on parasitism of caterpillars of Pieris rapae and Mamestra brassicae indicated a pest control potential. Grid trial using reared egg batches revealed no significant effect on parasitism of exposed M. brassicae and Plutella xylostella eggs in relation to the distance of the strip.

DOK - Versuch: Anbausystem-Effekte auf die Regenwürmer Organic Eprints
Jossi, Werner; Zihlmann, Urs; Dubois, David; Pfiffner, Lukas.

Cahenzli, Fabian; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Pfiffner, Lukas; Daniel, Claudia.

Fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and for organic fruit growers options for direct control are relatively few. EcoOrchard, a CORE Organic Plus project (2015-18) tracked EU farmers knowledge of Functional AgroBiodiversity (FAB) and generated new knowledge in order to successfully use FAB in orchards by a joint field experiment across seven countries of perennial flower strips to assess impact on natural enemies, codling moths and yield. Arthropod reaction to landscape and habitat features in agricultural landscapes Organic Eprints
Jeanneret, Philippe; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Pfiffner, Lukas; Walter, Th..
Determining explanatory environmental factors that lead to patterns of biodiversity in cultivated landscapes is an important step for the assessment of the impact of landscape changes. In the context of an assessment of the effect of agricultural national extensification programme on biodiversity, field data of 2 regions were collected according to a stratified sampling method. A distribution model of 3 indicator species taxa (butterflies, spiders, and carabid beetles) is related to influencing factors by means of multivariate statistics (CCA, partial CCA). Hypothetical influencing factors are categorised as follows: (1) habitat (habitat type, management techniques) and (2) landscape (habitat heterogeneity, variability, diversity, proportion of natural and...

Einfluss von eingesäten Wildblumenstreifen auf die epigäischen Lautkäferrind Spinnen (Carabidaeund Araneae) in der intensiv genutzten Agrarlandschaft "Grosses Moos",Schweiz Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Lutz, Michael; Blick, Theo; Pfiffner, Lukas.

Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk.

Use of sown wildflower strips to enhance natural enemies of agricultural pests Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Wyss, Eric.
Intensive agriculture and excessive use of agrochemicals have resulted in an impoverished wildlife in agricultural landscapes, especially in arable landscapes but also in perennial high input crops. The elimination of semi-natural habitats, simplification of crop rotations as well as high input of fertilisers and pesticides is considered to be responsible for the severe decline of biological diversity that has been observed (e.g. Aebischer 1991). These practices can reduce habitat quality and remove the necessary habitat structure that is important to many natural enemies. Moreover, agricultural landscapes are increasingly being simplified; with natural and semi natural areas fragmented and replaced altogether by large monocultural fields. As a...

Jahrl, Ingrid; Rudmann, Christine; Pfiffner, Lukas; Balmer, Oliver.
