In the present experiments we have demonstrated increased protection against a pathogenic bacterium in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.), after feeding the juveniles the live food organism Artemia enriched with a suspension of alginate micro-spheres containing an immunostimulant. Most likely the effect was due to stimulation of the non-specific defence of the juveniles. Poor control of the microbial conditions in the intensive rearing facilities may adversely affect the health of fish larvae, and is most likely one of the main factors restricting production of marine juveniles. Methods which help to control the microflora in the system or improve the resistance of the larvae against bacterial infection may... |

The worldwide distribution of the brine shrimp Artemia , in a variety of isolated biotopes with different ecological conditions, has resulted in the evolution of many geographical strains. Among these strains, substantial differences have been demonstrated in their nutritional quality and fitness, providing a basis for the selection of strains suitable for aquaculture. The Tanggu Saltworks (Tianjin, China) provide a unique environment for the production of Artemia . Unlike most other biotopes, they are characterized by a high primary productivity providing abundant food to sustain large populations of Artemia . Both laboratory studies and field observations, however, indicate that the local... |

An updated list of more than 350 Artemia sites is provided. It includes geographical coordinates of the sites and available data on the mode of reproduction of the locally occurring brine shrimp. The geographical distribution of Artemia is related to different types of climate. The classification of climate according to Thornthwaite provides a good correlation with the geographical occurrence of Artemia , as a result of which the world distribution pattern of Artemia can be predicted. Moreover, areas with possible Artemia sites and areas suited for transplantation and/or inoculation with Artemia can be identified on the basis of water balance... |

Contrary to the rearing of brine shrimp at laboratory scale which is current practice and well described in many papers, specific information on the high-density culturing of this species is scanty. This paper briefly reviews the different culturing methods precognized so far and discussed the advantages of batch culture in air-water-lift raceways: the latter technology has been optimized during the last 4 years at the Artemia Reference Center and permits a current production of 2 kg biomass/m³ in 2 weeks culturing at 25°C.A detailed description is given of:1. construction of the raceways: tank design and characteristics and selection of materials: construction, positioning and operation of the air-water-lifts;2. techniques for water... |

The importance of essential fatty acids for the early larval stages of cultured marine fish and crustacean larvae is well documented. In this regard, the variability in essential fatty acid content of their live prey Artemia is critical. This paper describes different techniques for improving the fatty acid profile in Artemia nauplii using microparticles and emulsions as enrichment diets. These diets can be applied during the incubation of the cysts and/or after the separation of the nauplii. After enrichment, the nauplii not only contain high levels of the essential fatty acid 20:5 omega 3 (up to 13.5% or 35.2 mg/g) but also considerable levels of 22:6 omega 3 (up to 7% or 18.1 mg/g), another essential fatty acid which... |

The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Similarly, no major differences in the lipid composition of the midgut gland, ovaries and muscle tissue of females could be detected. Results... |

Several bacteriological surveys were performed from 1994 to 1996 at different Litopenaeus vannamei hatcheries (in Ecuador) and shrimp farms (in Mexico). Samples were taken from routine productions of healthy and diseased L. vannamei larvae, postlarvae, and their culture environment and from healthy and diseased juveniles and broodstock. In Ecuador, the dominant bacterial flora associated with shrimp larvae showing symptoms of zoea 2 syndrome, mysis mold syndrome, and bolitas syndrome has been determined. Strains were characterized by Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and identified by comparison to a database of 850 Vibrio type and reference strains. A selection of strains was further genotypically... |
