Revisionary notes on the Sphenomorphus isolepis complex (Lacertilia, Scincidae) Naturalis
Storr, G.M..
Taxa that have only just attained specific distinction from each other can be of great interest to students of evolution, though their classification may pose serious problems for taxonomists. For example, the sparrows Passer domesticus and P. hispaniolensis behave as good species in most parts of their shared range but hybridize in other parts. The gulls of the Larus argentatus complex form a ring of annectant races around the Holarctic, but their overlapping terminal segments behave as good species in western Europe. Each of these phenomena (described by Mayr, 1963) is paralleled in Australian skinks of the genus Sphenomorphus, the first in the richardsonii complex and the second in the isolepis complex. Previous analyses of these complexes (Storr, 1967)...

A new species of Atractus (Reptilia: Ophidia: Colubridae: Dipsadinae) from the Amazon forest region in Brazil Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Prudente, A.L.C..
Three specimens of Atractus natans were found during fieldwork in the “Reserva Mamirauá”, Amazonas and a fourth one in the “Estação Científica Ferreira Penna”, Floresta de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. The specimens from Mamirauá were all collected in floating logs in várzea forest during the period of flooding. The new species is small (maximum total length 308 mm) with a coniform head, has 17-17-17 smooth dorsals, without apical pits, male lacking pre-anal keels, ventrals 136-162, caudals 19-25, anal undivided. One or two postoculars, loreal 1.6 –2.8 times as long as high, frontal triangular, wider than long. Maxillary teeth 5-6. The hemipenis is bilobed, with bifurcated sulcus spematicus, capitulum with calyces covered by very small spines, body covered by...

The Life of Natrix vittata (L.) Naturalis
Bergman, R.A.M..
GENERAL CHARACTER Natrix vittata, the striped swimmer, is a harmless little snake, about half a meter long and as thin as a little finger, living in Java on coastal plains and in the hills up to 1200 m above see level. In a given area she will be very common but in adjacent regions, which to us may present exactly the same character of humidity, altitude, temperature, vegetation, etc., there will be only very occasionally a Natrix vittata among the catch (de Haas, 1941a). Even in the field she is easily recognisable, as she will lift her head high enough to show the curious design of her ventral shields. If there is an opportunity for examining the snake more closely, the twin small white spots on the head shields will identify her. The colour of the body...

Low genetic variability in the endangered Colombian endemic freshwater turtle Podocnemis lewyana (Testudines, Podocnemididae) Naturalis
Vargas-Ramírez, M.; Chiari, Y.; Castaño-Mora, O.V.; Menken, S.B.J..
The Magdalena River Turtle (Podocnemis lewyana) is a Colombian endemic species, endangered due to human exploitation and habitat destruction. To date, this species is poorly known ecologically and data on its genetic diversity are lacking. Here we report on the first genetic survey of the species across its distribution range. We obtained mitochondrial DNA sequences (488 bp) of the cytochrome b gene from 109 individuals. Samples belong to populations located at several different localities, grouped in five regions, along the four main river basins: Magdalena, Cauca, San Jorge, and Sinú drainages. We found two haplotypes, which differ in only one nucleotide substitution and which are represented with different frequencies in the five geographic regions....

Patterns of phenotypic variation reveal substantial differentiation in sexual dimorphism of three Psammodromus (Squamata, Lacertidae) species Naturalis
San-Jose, L.M.; Gonzalez-Jimena, V.; Fitze, P.S..
The Spanish sand racer (Psammodromus hispanicus) has been recently split into three distinct species: P. hispanicus, P. edwardsianus, and P. occidentalis. Some morphological differences have been reported but there is as yet no description allowing unambiguous identification of the three species. Here, we describe differentiation in body measurements, scalation traits, and colour traits as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism. Our results show that P. edwardsianus can be easily distinguished by the presence of a supralabial scale below the subocular scale, which is absent in the other two species. Psammodromus hispanicus and P. occidentalis can be distinguished by the number of femoral pores, throat scales and ocelli, and the relative width of the...

A large phylogeny of turtles (Testudines) using molecular data Naturalis
Guillon, J.-M.; Guéry, L.; Hulin, V.; Girondot, M..
Turtles (Testudines) form a monophyletic group with a highly distinctive body plan. The taxonomy and phylogeny of turtles are still under discussion, at least for some clades. Whereas in most previous studies, only a few species or genera were considered, we here use an extensive compilation of DNA sequences from nuclear and mitochondrial genes for more than two thirds of the total number of turtle species to infer a large phylogeny for this taxon. Our results enable us to discuss previous hypotheses on species phylogeny or taxonomy. We are thus able to discriminate between competing hypotheses and to suggest taxonomical modifications. Finally, we pinpoint the remaining ambiguities for this phylogeny and the species for which new sequences should be...

The choice of external morphological characters and developmental stages for tadpole-based anuran taxonomy: a case study in Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata (Blyth, 1855) (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) Naturalis
Grosjean, S..
The morphology of tadpoles has long received too little attention in taxonomic and phylogenetic contexts, beyond the use of Orton’s general tadpole types, despite the potential of larval characters for resolving problems in systematics. A possible explanation for this neglect is the ontogenetic variation of external morphology. In order to understand the value of larval characters in taxonomy and systematics, it is necessary to determine the developmental stage at which characters reach their definitive size, form and colour before meaningful comparisons can be made within and between species. Here I use the tadpole of Rana (Sylvirana) nigrovittata as a model organism to assess ontogenetic character variation. Morphometric measurements were taken, and...

A reevaluation of the evidence supporting an unorthodox hypothesis on the origin of extant amphibians Naturalis
Marjanovic, D.; Laurin, M..
The origin of frogs, salamanders and caecilians is controversial. McGowan published an original hypothesis on lissamphibian origins in 2002 (McGowan, 2002, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 135: 1-32), stating that Gymnophiona was nested inside the 'microsaurian' lepospondyls, this clade was the sister-group of a caudate-salientian-albanerpetontid clade, and both were nested inside the dissorophoid temnospondyls. We have investigated McGowan's data matrix and isagree with the scoring of 35% of the cells. All taxa and all but two characters are affected. In some cases, we have a different interpretation about correspondence between morphology and character states, or we delimit states differently (or use information that was unknown in 2002). In...

Surinam Caecilians, with notes on Rhinatrema Bivittatum and the description of a new species of Microcaecilia (Amphibia, Gymnophiona) Naturalis
Nussbaum, R.A.; Hoogmoed, M.S..
In this paper we list seven species of caecilians known to occur in Surinam. An eighth species, the aquatic Typhlonectes compressicaudus, is likely to be found in Surinam, but there are no voucher specimens. We report the rediscovery of the rare Rhinatrema bivittatum, now known from four specimens, one each from Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Surinam. Microcaecilia taylori, described as a new species from Sipaliwini, is characterized mainly by a complete lack of secondary annuli, a feature which necessitated rediagnosis of the genus Microcaecilia. A Microcaecilia from the Lely Mountains differs from all known specimens of the genus by its larger size. The specimen is either a geographic variant of Microcaecilia unicolor, or it is an undescribed...

Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : I. Itinerary of a herpetological collecting trip in Surinam in 1968 Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
Since a few years the present author has been engaged in a study of the herpetofauna of Surinam, which resulted in a few publications (Hoogmoed 1967, 1969a, b). In early 1968, a grant was obtained from WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research, grant W956-2) which enabled me to undertake a seven months collecting trip in Surinam. From the start the purpose was to obtain specimens from several localities in the interior, as the coastal area was thought to be fairly well explored. Moreover, other important goals were to obtain information on the ecology and colours of the living animals and, in the case of the frogs and toads, to make sound records. As a well developed road system in Surinam only exists near the coast and between...

Annotated checklist of the herpetofauna of Petit Saut, Sinnamary River, French Guiana Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Avila-Pires, T.C.S..
The Mission Radeau des Cimes to Petit Saut, French Guiana, offered the opportunity to study the herpetofauna of the canopy of the tropical rainforest, an area hardly studied sofar. Two localities at heights of 30 and 35 m could be studied, whereas data on a third site were obtained through information from other participants. The herpetological results of the research in the canopy were meagre. Only the frog Hyla leucophyllata (Beireis) and the lizard Mabuya bistriata (Spix) were observed in the canopy. Additionally the terrestrial herpetofauna was studied extensively and turned out to contain some species that had not been reported before from French Guiana. Also, for many species new distribution data within French Guiana were obtained. Le Mission Radeau...

Sea turtles nesting in Surinam Naturalis
Schulz, J.P..
PREFACE The first manuscript for this book originated in 1970 in the form of a revised translation of 'Zeeschildpadden in Suriname,, a mimeographed report written primarily for internal use. This English version was of the same hybrid nature as the Dutch booklet, which was meant to be a comprehensive general guide for visitors to the nesting beaches, as well as a publication of the results of local research. The present English version, which has grown to three times the size of the original, maintains this hybrid nature. Consequently this book contains sections on general taxonomy and on the biology of sea turtles, subjects which have been treated elsewhere in a superior way by more competent authors. This general information, which is included to make...

A new genus for the Australian leptodactylid frog Crinia darlingtoni Naturalis
Tyler, M.J..
INTRODUCTION Crinia darlingtoni Loveridge, 1933, was described from a series of four specimens collected by P. J. Darlington at the Queensland National Park, Macpherson Range, Queensland, and distinguished by the rudimentary condition of the first finger and the extremely small first toe. Loveridge noted that some specimens bore a resemblance to C. acutirostris Andersson in colouration but did not discuss the phylogenetic relationships of his new species. For a generic revision Parker (1940) examined a juvenile paratype and on the basis of a similarity in the condition of the prevomer, he associated C. darlingtoni with C. leai Fletcher, C. rosea Harrison and C. laevis (Günther). In the last species he also recognized two sub-species, C. l. laevis and C. l....

Some notes upon the anatomy of Tropidophis and Trachyboa (Serpentes) Naturalis
Brongersma, L.D..
In literature only very scanty information is to be found about the viscera of the Boid genera Tropidophis and Trachyboa, and therefore I believed it worth while to publish some notes which I made during dissections of the following species and subspecies: Tropidophis melanurus (Schleg.), Tropidophis maculatus haetianus (Cope), Tropidophis pardalis pardalis (Gundl.) and Trachyboa gularis Ptrs. The notes are in no way exhaustive; the specimens have been preserved in alcohol for a long time, and therefore it was not possible to study all features in detail. All but two genera of the Boidae have two well developed lungs. One of these two exceptions was mentioned already by Cope (1894, pp. 218, 220: Ungualia; 1900, p. 697), viz., the genus Ungalia (i.e.,...

A new genus and two new species of minute leptodactylid frogs from northern South America, with comments upon Phyzelaphryne (Amphibia: Anura: Leptodactylidae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Lescure, J..
The synonymisation of Phyzelaphryne miriamae Heyer with Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus Andersson is denied and it is shown that both species are quite distinct in numerous characters. A new genus (Adelophryne) of minute leptodactylid frogs with pointed discs on the toes and a distinctly reduced fourth finger, containing two new species (A. adiastola spec. nov. and A. gutturosa spec. nov.) is described from northern South America. A key to separate the diminutive leptodactylid frogs with pointed toetips is given. The relationships of the new genus are not clear, but possibly are with one of the species groups of Eleutherodactylus, of the subfamily Eleutherodactylinae.

On two new species of Pseudogonatodes Ruthven, 1915 (Reptilia: Squamata: Gekkonidae), with remarks on the distribution of some other sphaerodactyl lizards Naturalis
Avila-Pires, T.C.S.; Hoogmoed, M.S..
Two new species of Pseudogonatodes Ruthven, 1915, are described, one from the Rio Juruá Basin, in the state of Acre, Brazil (Amazonian rainforest), the other from Rancho Grande, in the state Aragua, Venezuela (cloud forest). Both have granular dorsals and relatively numerous fourth toe lamellae, of which the third (from tip to base of toe) is not distinctly larger than the two distal ones. The species from the Rio Juruá is small, with dark belly, and recognised, among other characteristics, by its tall, conical to flat-conical dorsals. That from Rancho Grande is relatively large, with low number of ventrals, and mental with a straight or convex posterior segment medially, among other distinctive characteristics. Some remarks on the geographic distribution...

Madagaskars Herpetofauna und die Kontinentaldrift. Studien über die Reftilienfauna Madagaskars VI) Naturalis
Mertens, R..

Development, comparative morphology and cornification of reptilian claws in relation to claws evolution in tetrapods Naturalis
Alibardi, L..
The development of claws in different reptiles and their cornification are analyzed using histological, ultrastructural and autoradiographic methods. Claws develop at the tip of digits in relation to the growth of the terminal phalanx and appear as modified scales. The apical epidermis of digit becomes thickened and is associated with a mesenchymal condensation or a dense mesenchyme. The dorsal side of the digit becomes the unguis while the ventral side becomes the sub-unguis. The corneous layer in the unguis is thicker than in the sub-unguis and accumulates hard-keratin while corneocytes remain separated or partially fused. Bundles of hard-keratin tend to accumulate in parallel orientation with respect to the surface and are directed toward the claw tip....
