Organic agriculture and climate change in developing countries Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador; Amador, Manuel; Castro, Jonathan; Kilcher, Lukas.
Coffee is Nicaragua’s main organic product. There are 13,100 hectares of certified coffee. This area represents 10 percent of the total coffee production of Nicaragua and is managed by approximately 3,500 small producers. 90 percent of the organic coffee is sold for the export market. In Nicaragua a legal framework for organic farming as well as regulations for the development of environmental services payments exist (forest conservation, water management, biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration). There are also studies on carbon sequestration and carbon emissions in agriculture, forestry and industry. However, there are no investigations relating specifically to organic agriculture and climate change. 2. Background investigation Since 2004,...

Dairy cow defecation and urination frequency and spatial distribution in relation to time-limited grazing Organic Eprints
Oudshoorn, Frank; Kristensen, Troels; Nadimi, Esmaeil.
The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect of limited grazing time on urination and defecation frequency, spatial distribution of excrement in the paddock, and the resulting nitrogen balance at animal and field level. During a 6-week period in early summer, 60 Holstein Frisian dairy cows (31.0±5.4 kg ECM) were randomly allocated to three different treatments, with grazing at clover-grass pasture during daytime for 4, 6.5 or 9 h daily. Indoor feeding, with a mixture of roughage and concentrates (13% crude protein), was restricted for treatment 4 and 6.5 h to the amount the 9-h treatment could eat. Cows allowed grazing at pasture for 4 h moved more rapidly during pasture, moved longer distance per active hour and used a higher proportion of...

Modelling N2O emissions from organic fertilisers for LCA inventories Organic Eprints
Meier, Matthias S.; Schader, Christian; Berner, Alfred; Gattinger, Andreas.
Apart from mineral fertilisers, organic fertilisers act mainly via the soil C-N pool in order to provide available nitrogen to plants. This different mode of action is not reflected so far in the current IPCC N2O emission model. Here we propose a simple model to calculate N2O emissions from organic fertilisers and plant residues. It considers the long-term immobilisation of N within stable organic matter in the soil as well as the mineralisation of additional N from the soil pool. A first test with field data showed reliable simulations of measured N2O emissions. By comparing values generated by our model with values generated by the IPCC model we show that the IPCC model may overestimate emissions from organic fertilisers. Therefore, within LCA...

Evaluating vegetated buffer zones for phosphorus retention in cereal and grass production Organic Eprints
Uusi-Kämppä, Jaana.
The buffer zones seem to be effective to stop erosion and trap particle bound P in surface runoff from the autumn ploughed clay soil. On pastures, the buffers are not so important, if P fertiliser is not surface applied and the grazing intensity is not too high. However, the high DRP loss to surface runoff may be a real problem on grass fields in spring. The buffers are not able to uptake nutrients in early spring when the runoff is highest.

Climate Change Adaptation Through Science-Farmer-Policy Dialogue in Mali Organic Eprints
Bautze, Lin; Nicolay, Gian L.; Meier, Matthias; Gattinger, Andreas; Müller, Adrian.
Climate change increases the number of risks for agricultural production in arid and semiarid regions, especially in Western Africa. Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to climate change risks. These risks affect their socioeconomic situation, as well as the local food sector value chain in general. Therefore, their food security is threatened if smallholder farming structures do not adapt to them. Thus, effective climate change adaptation measures for smallholders are essential and should be implemented without delay. However, success hinges on the acceptance of the promoted measures among various stakeholders. Thus, their acceptance needs to be assessed before promoting. The project “The potential of sustainable land-use systems to promote...

Using vegetation indices in autumn to estimate nitrate leaching during autumn and winter in different cropping systems Organic Eprints
Zhao, Jin; De Notaris, Chiara; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Nitrate leaching losses from arable cropping systems cause severe damages to the environmental services worldwide. There is a considerable need for methods that allow rapid, easy and area covering detection of nitrate leaching to guide N management. We used three years of data from the 5th cycle of a long-term crop rotation experiment in Denmark to quantify the relationships between nitrate leaching in autumn and winter and field conditions in autumn as defined by three vegetation indices [VIs; Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Ratio Red Edge (RRE)] in autumn. Following cereal crops, catch crops significantly reduced nitrate leaching in autumn and winter, whereas this was only the case for one out of the three...

Simulating soil N2O and CO2 emissions from arable cropping systems using FASSET and MOBILE-DNDC Organic Eprints
Chirinda, N.; Kracher, D.; Porter, J.R.; Olesen, J.E.; Petersen, B.M.; Doltra, J.; Kiese, R.; Butterbach-Bahl, K..
Modelling of soil emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is complicated by complex interactions between processes and factors influencing their production, consumption and transport. In this study N2O emissions and heterotrophic CO2 respiration were simulated from soils under winter wheat grown in three different organic and one inorganic fertilizer-based cropping system using two different models, i.e., MoBiLE-DNDC and FASSET. The two models were generally capable of simulating most seasonal trends of measured soil heterotrophic CO2 respiration and N2O emissions. Annual soil heterotrophic CO2 respiration was underestimated by both models in all systems (about 10−30% by FASSET and 10−40% by MoBiLE-DNDC). Both models overestimated annual...

Similarity of technical logics of cropping systems organization between conventional and recently converted organic farmers in a water catchment area Organic Eprints
Gratecap, J.B.; Wezel, A.; Casagrande, Marion; Martin, P..
Organic farming is considered as a solution to preserve water quality in drinking water catchments. For local managers of these catchments it is thus important to identify conventional farmers for potential conversion to organic farming. The aim of this article is to assess technical similarity of conventional farmers concerned by a water catchment to organic farming. We build a typology of farmers based on technical logics related to cropping systems organization. We differentiated five types of farmers among 18 conventional dairy farmers and three recently converted organic farmers. According to our results, only two farmers can be considered as close to technical logics identified in organic farms. Nevertheless, we could identify partial technical...

Deep roots of Brassica oleracea have high uptake of 15N-nitrate to 2 meters soil depth Organic Eprints
Kristensen, H.L.; Thorup-Kristensen, K..
• Deep roots may be important for uptake of NO3- by annual crops. A field experiment with the deep rooted crop curly kale (Brassica oleracea L. convar. acephala (DC.) Alef. var. sabellica L.) was performed to investigate root distribution and N uptake in deep soil layers. • Root distribution was investigated by use of minirhizotrons and root extractions to 2.4 m depth. The capacity for crop N uptake was studied by deep 15NO3- placement followed by analysis of plant 15N content after 3-30 days. • The atom percent 15N excess (APE) of plant samples was of similar size after uptake of 15N placed at depths in the range of 0.4-2 m. Root colonisation and start of 15N uptake were synchronized in 2.4 m depth. • The deep roots had higher inflow of 15N compared...

Beisaat von Zwischenfrüchten als Möglichkeit zur Reduzierung der N-Auswaschung in Wintergetreide? Organic Eprints
Loges, Dr. Ralf; Mauscherning, Inken; Taube, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm.
In a field experiment the potential of mixtures of winter cereals and catch crops to reduce nitrate leaching was investigated. Pure winter wheat showed the highest N-losses (56 kg N ha-1). Compared to a control without a catch crop, winter rye and oilseed radish grown in pure stand or in mixture with a winter cereal reduced nitrate-leaching by 30 to 80 %. However, common vetch had a significant lower potential compared to the tested non-legume catch crops. Further investigations are needed to optimize the system with special regards to the concurrence between cereal and catch crop in autumn and in early spring.

Transport and reduction of nitrate in clayey till underneath forest and arable land. Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, P.R.; Urup, J.; Helstrup, T.; Jensen, M.B.; Eiland, F.; Vinther, F.P..
Transport and reduction of nitrate in a typically macroporous clayey till were examined at variable flow rate and nitrate flux. The experiments were carried out using saturated, large diameter (0.5 m), undisturbed soil columns (LUC), from a forest and nearby agricultural sites. Transport of nitrate was controlled by flow along the macropores (fractures and biopores) in the columns. Nitrate reduction (denitrification) determined under active flow mainly followed first order reactions with half-lives (t1/2) increasing with depth (1.5–3.5 m) from 7 to 35 days at the forest site and 1–7 h at the agricultural site. Nitrate reduction was likely due to microbial degradation of accumulated organic matter coupled with successive consumption of O2 and NO3− in the...

Klimarelevanz des Agrarsektors der Bundesrepublik Deutschland: Reduzierung der Emission von Kohlendioxid Organic Eprints
Haas, Guido; Geier, Uwe; Schulz, Dirk; Köpke, Ulrich.

Kratochvil, R.; Lindenthal, T.; Heß, J.; Freyer, B..
Biernat, Lars; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Approximately 13 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are caused by agricultural practices. From an environmental and economic point of view, gaseous N losses as well as nitrate leaching to groundwater play, a significant role. The aim of the present study is to analyze abiotic environmental effects of organic and conventional all-arable farming at a highly productive site in Northern Germany. Two different organic crop rotations with 25% vs. 40% legumes and no application of external N-fertilizers were compared over a two-year period to a typical site specific conventional rotation at an average mineral fertilser input of 195 kg N ha-1 a-1. For gas flux measurement, the closed-chamber method was applied. Nitrate leaching was measured by...
