Compliance To Mesh Size Regulations In Artisanal Marine Fishery In Ghana 20
Akapula, W..
In Ghana, fishing is the most important direct and indirect employment generating activity in the entire coastal zone of length of about 528 km. It has been estimated that the fishery sub-sector supports about 1.5million people, and fish and fish products contributed 21% (US $56 million) to the nations non-traditional export earnings in 1997(FAO, 1998). With the persistent decline in the price of cocoa and gold which are Ghana’s traditional export commodities and the resultant adverse effect on foreign exchange earnings, government policy aims at increasing the production of non traditional export commodities, including fish, to meet the growing domestic demand and export.....

Moustapha, Déme; Ibrahima, Seck; Diébel, Sarr; Moustapha, Thiam; Karim, Dahou; Mamadou Diop, Thioune; Aliou, Sall.

The differential effects of changing management regimes on yields from two fisheries exploiting the same resources 20
Djama, Theodore; Pitcher, T.J..
A yield per recruit model has been used to compare the effects of mesh size increment on the yields and revenues of the fisheries of Cameroon under two different cases. Case 1 assumes the commercial fishery to move from the exploitation of three age-groups to two age-groups with no interactions with the artisanal fishery, whereas Case 2 takes into account these interactions. The difference in the percentage increase of yield per recruit between case 1 and case 2 is 61% at current fishing (46% and 18% yield per recruit increment in cases 1 and 2 respectively). The usually accepted long-term yield per recruit increment with increase of age at first capture (with a single non-interacting fisheries) is, in this case, cancelled out. However, the revenues...

Seychelles artisanal fisheries statistics for 2000 20
Azemia, R.T.; Boulle, D.P..
(1). During 2000 an estimated total of 4764 tonnes of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 330 fishing boats. 89.6% of the total catch was landed on Mahe alone. The catch volume has decreased by 78 tonnes compared to the 1999 catch and the number of boats operating has increased by 15 over the same period. (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were carangues (37.0%), job (11.6%), capitaine (8.9%) and maquereau doux (6.2%). (3). Peak landings occurred in September (750.0 MT) and the lowest catch was recorded in June (236.3 MT). The average catch per month was 397 tonnes. (4). A marked seasonal variation in catches of demersal species was observed, with low catches being recorded during the period of...

Narváez-Barandinga, J.C.; Blanco Racedo, J..
The “Coroncoro” fish Micropogonias furnieri has been one of the most important traditional fish resources in CGSM and CP. In order to determine exploitation status of its stock, aspects related to its biology and population parameters have been assessed. Mean maturity size was estimated in 20.7 cm at total length; whereas sex ratio was 2.39 females per male. Ripe individuals occurred throughout the whole year, with a maturation and spawning peak in the rainy season (november). Length-weight relationship showed no difference between sexes and a common equation with allometric growth W = 0.0064LT3.2 was estimated. The estimated parameters of von Bertalanffy growth function were L∞ = 34.0 cm, K = 0.44 yr-1, t0 = 0.301 yr and C = 0.5; with a growth index...

Fishing and poverty levels around Lake Victoria (Kenya) 20
Abila, R.O.; Omwega, R.N.; Lwenya, C..
Fishing is known to be one of the oldest occupations of mankind and in Lake Victoria (Kenya); it has been largely practiced at artisanal levels. Despite this, poverty amongst the fisher folk remains high. Why the fisher folk remain in perpetual poverty was the key research question for this study. Sampling was conducted on 12 landing beaches between June and August 2004. Data was obtained using survey questionnaires; personal interviews were made using open-ended questions and beach observations. Results from this study indicates that 179 fishers sampled earned an average income of Ksh. 107,063 each in a year with modal income of Ksh. 57,600 while in a day they earned an average income of Ksh. 518 each with modal income of Ksh. 200. Fishers perceived that...

A study was carried out the white fish landings made by the artisanal fisheries in mainland Ecuador in 1982. There were four main groups of landings: the fishery for large pelagic fish, the demersal longline fishery on hard grounds; the set net fisheries for corvina and other medium and large bottom fish and the landings of shrimp by-catch. The fishes caught and their nomenclature; the gears used, the vessels and the fishing communities are briefly described. The landings of with fish by these fisheries in 1082 are given and discussed. The total landings were between 15.000 t and 20.000 t. Of this about 40% was large pelagic fish; 20-30% shrimp by-catch, 20% good quality demersal fish and 10% shark. It should be possible to increase the landings in some...

Diop, H.; Thiam, I..
