From October to April the growth of spat of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis semidecussata in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability. |

The controlled nursery culturing of mollusc spat produced to date by millions in commercial hatcheries is an intermediate step in mollusc farming which is receiving more and more attention. Different technologies for nursery culturing indoors as well as outdoors have been developed at different places. The principles are always basically the same and consist of culturing postlarvae of a few millimeters to a size of a few centimeters in densities as high as possible in specific devices containing seawater which is eventually enriched with live unicellular algae or inert foods. This paper reports on the first results obtained in Belgium in an indoor experimental nursery with spat of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis... |

Samples of the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis collected from a closed lagoon (Sakumo) and two open lagoons in Ghana (Benya and Ningo; n=550), and the Bonny river estuary in Nigeria (n=620), were analyzed for their total and organic mercury content. Total mercury concentration showed significant spatial differences, with median values of 0.1 µg/g dry wt. in the closed lagoon, 0.2 in the estuary and 0.3 in the open lagoons. Concentration tended to be higher during the dry season in the lagoons, but lower in the estuary. The median relative organic concentration varied between 20 and 60% methyl Hg, depending on location and season. Age effects were detected in the lagoons, total Hg concentration decreasing with length. |

Nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs, as the intermediate step between the controlled production of larvae in commercial hatcheries and the growout in the wild, is a practice which is receiving more and more attention in mollusc farming. The purpose of nursery rearing of bivalves is to culture cultchless spat of a few millimeters in size, up to 1-2 cm, in a minimum of time, in densities as high as possible, and at minimal costs and risks. In the last decade various technologies for nursery culturing, indoors as well as outdoors, have been developed at different places, ranging from suspended culture in the open sea to controlled onshore culture in upwelling cylinders. This paper reviews the different systems developed until now, with special emphasis on one... |

The nutritional value of various foods and diets for juvenile bivalves is reviewed and commented. From all foods tested specific microalgues seem to be the most suited for young bivalves. Presently, serious alternatives for replacing living algae by inert, artificial feeds are practically inexistent, though research efforts are made in this direction. The various microalgae production-systems used for feeding juvenile bivalves are also reviewed. A literature survey and the COST inquiry held in 1979 by our laboratory revealed that nearly all commercial enterprises involved in nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Europe utilize natural phytoplankton as food. Culturing of the postlarvae is performed either in situ (in the sea) or in... |

This study deals with detailed morphology and anatomy of 4 species of Scaphopoda and 5 species of protobranch Bivalvia. Both classes are traditionally grouped in the taxon Diasoma, which has been questioned by different methodologies, such as molecular and developmental. This study is developed under a phylogenetic methodology with the main concern in performing it in an intelligible and testable methodology. The analyzed Scaphopoda species came from the Brazilian coast and belong to the family Dentaliidae [(1) Coccodentalium carduus; (2) Paradentalium disparile] and Gadiliidae; [(3) Polyschides noronhensis, n. sp. from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago; (4) Gadila braziliensis]. These species represent the main branches of the class Scaphopoda. From... |

The bivalves collected in the Western Antarctic and Subantarctic waters by scientists of the Instituto Oceanográfico - USP during the Scientific Brazilian Expeditions to Antarctical-IX are characterised through its conchiliological features, illustrated and their occurrence plotted in maps. A species of bivalve collected by scuba divers of the IO-USP on the Napier Rock, Admiralty Bay, King George Island during the Expeditions XV and XVI is also considered in this work. The material identified is representative of 25 species distributed among three families and four genera of Protobranchia, three farnilies and five genera of Pteriornorpha, five families and six genera of Heterodonta, and four families and four genera of Anomalo desmata. The main scope of... |

Dates of marine Holocene molluscs from Uruguay (Villa Soriano Formation) range from 6849 to 1858 cal. years BP. There are no significative gaps among the different ages obtained, with the exception of the interval 2276-2830 calculated years BP. Two kinds of concentrations are distinguished: autochthonous, for which a low energy depositional environment is inferred, and parautochthonous, deposited in foreshore and nearshore high-energy environments. Results of different types of multivariate analyses on presence-absence and abundance data show that only three localities are clearly differentiated from the others. The discrimination of two of them (Arazatí, Las Cañas) is explained by the presence of only one or two species, but the third (Punta Rasa) is the... |
