Onshore nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Belgium OMA
Claus, C.; Maeckelberghe, H.; De Pauw, N..
From October to April the growth of spat of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis semidecussata in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability.

Nursery culturing of bivalve spat in heated seawater OMA
Claus, C.; Van Holderbeke, L.; Maeckelberghe, H.; Persoone, G..
The controlled nursery culturing of mollusc spat produced to date by millions in commercial hatcheries is an intermediate step in mollusc farming which is receiving more and more attention. Different technologies for nursery culturing indoors as well as outdoors have been developed at different places. The principles are always basically the same and consist of culturing postlarvae of a few millimeters to a size of a few centimeters in densities as high as possible in specific devices containing seawater which is eventually enriched with live unicellular algae or inert foods. This paper reports on the first results obtained in Belgium in an indoor experimental nursery with spat of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Venerupis...

Mercury in the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis from Ghana and Nigeria OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Azokwu, M.I.; Otchere, F.A.; Ali, I.B..
Samples of the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis collected from a closed lagoon (Sakumo) and two open lagoons in Ghana (Benya and Ningo; n=550), and the Bonny river estuary in Nigeria (n=620), were analyzed for their total and organic mercury content. Total mercury concentration showed significant spatial differences, with median values of 0.1 µg/g dry wt. in the closed lagoon, 0.2 in the estuary and 0.3 in the open lagoons. Concentration tended to be higher during the dry season in the lagoons, but lower in the estuary. The median relative organic concentration varied between 20 and 60% methyl Hg, depending on location and season. Age effects were detected in the lagoons, total Hg concentration decreasing with length.

Trends in nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs OMA
Claus, C..
Nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs, as the intermediate step between the controlled production of larvae in commercial hatcheries and the growout in the wild, is a practice which is receiving more and more attention in mollusc farming. The purpose of nursery rearing of bivalves is to culture cultchless spat of a few millimeters in size, up to 1-2 cm, in a minimum of time, in densities as high as possible, and at minimal costs and risks. In the last decade various technologies for nursery culturing, indoors as well as outdoors, have been developed at different places, ranging from suspended culture in the open sea to controlled onshore culture in upwelling cylinders. This paper reviews the different systems developed until now, with special emphasis on one...

Use and production of microalgae as food for nursery bivalves OMA
De Pauw, N..
The nutritional value of various foods and diets for juvenile bivalves is reviewed and commented. From all foods tested specific microalgues seem to be the most suited for young bivalves. Presently, serious alternatives for replacing living algae by inert, artificial feeds are practically inexistent, though research efforts are made in this direction. The various microalgae production-systems used for feeding juvenile bivalves are also reviewed. A literature survey and the COST inquiry held in 1979 by our laboratory revealed that nearly all commercial enterprises involved in nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Europe utilize natural phytoplankton as food. Culturing of the postlarvae is performed either in situ (in the sea) or in...

Mendonça,Luana Marina de Castro; Guimarães,Carmen Regina Parisotto; Lima,Silvio Felipe Barbosa.
Abstract The malacofauna bycatch of sea-bob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) trawl fisheries on the coast of Sergipe was studied for 5 years. The malacofauna bycatch considered was obtained in nine oceanographic sampling campaigns carried out between May 1999 and June 2003 in 18 stations distributed in six transects along depths of 10, 20 and 30 m. A total of 2,669 individuals of mollusk belonging to 54 species were captured on the 18 sea-bob shrimp trawl stations carried out along the coast of Sergipe. The considerable richness of mollusks was composed by 19 families and 31 species of gastropods, 12 families and 19 species of bivalves and 2 families and 4 species of cephalopods. The highest abundance were observed at stations 13 (373...

Comparative morphology among representatives of main taxa of Scaphopoda and basal protobranch Bivalvia (Mollusca) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Simone,Luiz Ricardo L..
This study deals with detailed morphology and anatomy of 4 species of Scaphopoda and 5 species of protobranch Bivalvia. Both classes are traditionally grouped in the taxon Diasoma, which has been questioned by different methodologies, such as molecular and developmental. This study is developed under a phylogenetic methodology with the main concern in performing it in an intelligible and testable methodology. The analyzed Scaphopoda species came from the Brazilian coast and belong to the family Dentaliidae [(1) Coccodentalium carduus; (2) Paradentalium disparile] and Gadiliidae; [(3) Polyschides noronhensis, n. sp. from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago; (4) Gadila braziliensis]. These species represent the main branches of the class Scaphopoda. From...

Isognomon bicolor (C.B. Adams) (Bivalvia, Isognomonidae): primeiro registro para o Brasil, redescrição da espécie e considerações sobre a ocorrência e distribuição de Isognomon na costa brasileira Zoologia
Domaneschi,Osmar; Martins,Claudio Mantovani.
The bivalve family Isognomonidae is represented in the Western Atlantic by the living genera Crenatula Lamarck, 1804 and Isognomon Solander, 1786. I. alatus (Gmelin, 1791) and I. radiatus (Anton, 1839) are the only Isognomonidae referred to the Brazilian malacofauna. The present work refers to the first record and geographic distribution of I. bicolor along the Brazilian littoral, and presents a re-description of the species based on shell characters, which include those of the prodissoconch. The occurrence of I. alatus and I. radiatus along the Brazilian littoral could not be confirmed, despite the intensive search for these Isognomonidae from Rio Grande do Norte through Rio Grande do Sul.

Anatomia funcional de Protothaca (Leukoma) pectorina (Lamarck) (Bivalvia, Veneridae) Zoologia
Guerón,Cordélia de Oliveira Castro; Narchi,Walter.
Protothaca (Leukoma) pectorina (Lamarck, 1818) lives from the West Indies to Santa Catarina State, Brazil, in soft muddy beaches in quiet waters of protected bays with little amounts of suspended material. A study of the functional anatomy of P. pectorina and its ecological aspects were undertaken. The anatomy and functioning of the stomach and the mechanisms for selection of particles were observed. The siphons, ctenidia, labial palps and stomach were analised and related to the animal's natural environment. The siphons belong to type B (Yonge 1948), the ctenidia to type C (1a) (Atkins 1937). The ctenidia are homorhabdic (Ridewood 1903) and the stomach belongs to type V (Purchon 1960).

Gametogênese e dinâmica da reprodução de Anodontites trapesialis (Lamarck) (Unionoida, Mycetopodidae) no lago Baía do Poço, planície de inundação do rio Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brasil Zoologia
Callil,Cláudia T.; Mansur,Maria C. D..

Molluscan assemblages from the marine Holocene of Uruguay: composition, geochronology, and paleoenvironmental signals Ameghiniana
Martínez,Sergio; Rojas,Alejandra; Ubilla,Martín; Verde,Mariano; Perea,Daniel; Piñeiro,Graciela.
Dates of marine Holocene molluscs from Uruguay (Villa Soriano Formation) range from 6849 to 1858 cal. years BP. There are no significative gaps among the different ages obtained, with the exception of the interval 2276-2830 calculated years BP. Two kinds of concentrations are distinguished: autochthonous, for which a low energy depositional environment is inferred, and parautochthonous, deposited in foreshore and nearshore high-energy environments. Results of different types of multivariate analyses on presence-absence and abundance data show that only three localities are clearly differentiated from the others. The discrimination of two of them (Arazatí, Las Cañas) is explained by the presence of only one or two species, but the third (Punta Rasa) is the...
