Usefulness of Incomplete Demand Model in Censored Demand System Estimation AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H..
The popularity of AIDS may not easily extend to censored demand systems. We propose an incomplete demand system that has relatively few restrictions on the parameter space, but preserves its theoretical consistency and apply this model to Indonesian data that have significant proportion of censored observations.

Consumer’s choice on GM labeling: evidences from China AgEcon
Liu, Pengcheng; Huang, Chung-Huang; Feng, Zhongchao; Zhou, Deyi.
With the development of the biotechnology, more and more GM foods enter the food chain of the mankind. What are the consumers’ attitudes toward those foods? And what are their requirements for safety management derived from the emerging of those foods? By conducting a survey in Wuhan with a sample of 621 correspondents, the study collects the correspondents’ attitudes on GM foods and expectations on safety managements for those foods, and analyses impacts of consumers’ general preferences, specific perceptions on GM foods, and the special labeling usage behavior both on the attitudes formation in GM labeling and on the labeling choices using MNL models. The paper further proposes some suggestions in GM foods safety management based on the modeling results.

Competitiveness of U.S. Meats in Japan and South Korea: A Source Differentiated Market Study AgEcon
Mutondo, Joao E.; Henneberry, Shida Rastegari.
The restricted source differentiated almost ideal demand system (RSDAIDS) is used to estimate the parameters of the Japanese and South Korean source differentiated meat demand models. Expenditure and own-price elasticities indicate that Japanese beef, Canadian and Danish pork, and Brazilian and Thai poultry have a competitive advantage in Japan. The BSE outbreak in Japan decreased the shares of Japanese and U.S. beef. Regarding South Korea, the results indicate that imported beef from the U.S. and Australia, Danish pork, and South Korean and Thai poultry have a competitive advantage. The U.S. BSE outbreak decreased the market shares of U.S. beef in the South Korean beef market.

Aggregation Theory for Incomplete Systems AgEcon
LaFrance, Jeffrey T.; Beatty, Timothy K.M.; Pope, Rulon D..
Gorman's theory of demand is extended comprehensively to incomplete systems. The incomplete systems approach dramatically increases this class of models. The separate roles of symmetry and adding up are identified in the rank and the functional form of this class of models. We show that symmetry determines rank and the maximum rank is three. We show that adding up and 0o homogeneity determines the functional form and there is no functional form restriction for an incomplete system. We prove that every full rank system and reduced rank systems with a minimal level of degeneracy can be written as a polynomial in a single function of income. A complete set of closed form solutions for the indirect objective functions of this class of models is derived. A...

DEMAND FOR CREDENCE CHARACTERISTICS IN BEEF AgEcon
Kola, Jukka; Latvala, Terhi.
The recent food crises in Europe have raised public concerns about the quality and safety of food. The growing concern among the consumers towards food safety issues has increased the demand for quality attributes. Most quality properties of food products can be considered as credence characteristics, quality of which cannot be inferred before the purchase, and sometimes not even after the purchase. The aim of this study is to evaluate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the value of new information about and the information systems set for credence characteristics of beef. Economics of information is the theoretical framework. The quantitative approach focuses to measure the ex ante value of credence characteristics, and the method of contingent...

Labour inputs and financial profitability of conventional and agroforestry-based soil fertility management practices in Zambia AgEcon
Ajayi, Olu Clifford; Akinnifesi, Festus K.; Sileshi, G.; Kanjipite, W..
Several agro-ecological practices have been developed to increase the range of soil fertility management options available to farmers, but little information is available on their labour input requirement and profitability relative to conventional practices. This study used a multiple visit cost-route method to estimate labour inputs and financial profitability of agroforestry-based and conventional (with and without fertiliser) soil fertility management practices in eastern Zambia. Results show that aggregated over a five-year cycle, labour inputs used under agroforestry practices were lower than fertilised maize fields but higher than non-fertilised continuous cropped maize. Agroforestry practices were more profitable (NPV ranging between $233 and $327...

DEMAND, SUPPLY AND PRICE PREDICTION OF RICE IN TAIWAN FROM 1976 TO 1985 AgEcon
Lee, Wun-Chi.
Taiwan is located in the subtropical area of the Far East. With the benefit of suitable weather, average temperature just under 71 F in the north and nearly 76 F in the south, and with the yearly precipitation around 75 inches, rice has been the self sufficient staff crop in Taiwan. Even in the early eighteenth century, Taiwan exported rice to support the supply in Mainland China. Rice is a necessity for Taiwanese. A sufficient supply and stabilization of its price are relevant to the whole economy and society. Because of the development of industry and economic growth, a lot of cultivated land has been transferred from rice production to industrial or architectural utilization under the principle of comparative advantage since 1958. The benefit per...

Factores determinantes del precio de la carne de ternera: un analisis hedonico AgEcon
Royo, Azucena Gracia; Perez y Perez, Luis.

Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Renwick, Mary E..
The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

DEMAND FOR BREAKFAST CEREALS: WHOLE GRAINS GUIDANCE AND FOOD CHOICE AgEcon
Ishdorj, Ariun; Jensen, Helen H..
When using household-level data to examine consumer demand it is common to find that consumers purchase only a subset of the available goods, setting the demand for the remaining goods to zero. Ignoring such censoring of the dependent variables can lead to estimators with poor statistical properties and estimates that lead to poor policy decisions. In this paper we investigate household demand for four types of breakfast cereals, such as whole grain ready-to-eat, non-whole grain ready-to-eat, whole grain hot and non-whole grain hot cereals, using a censored Al- most Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and estimate the parameters of the model via Bayesian methods. Using household level scanner data (ACNielsen Homescan) we find that demand for all types of breakfast...

Fragmenting markets and quality change in New Zealand foods: empirical analysis with a Rotterdam model AgEcon
Khaled, Mohammed; McWha, Vhari; Lattimore, Ralph G..
Very little is known about changes in the demand characteristics of food in New Zealand. As far as we can determine, there has never been a complete disaggregated food demand model estimated for New Zealand. The object of this paper is to update these estimates using more recent data to see whether there are grounds for believing that the structural changes that occurred primarily during the last two decades are having effects on the magnitude of food demand elasticities in New Zealand. To this end, a Rotterdam food demand system is estimated using time series data. The results indicate that over the last 20 years, household consumption has increased for fruit and vegetables, poultry, food eaten away from home, and sweet products, drinks and other foods....

THE EFFECT OF CALIFORNIA WEATHER CONDITIONS ON PRICE PREMIA FOR ORGANICALLY GROWN VEGETABLES IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Ro, Eunjik; Frechette, Darren L..
Organic vegetable producers typically earn a premium over conventional producers to cover the added costs of organic production. The premium can vary greatly, making organic vegetable farming riskier than conventional farming and causing potential financial problems for new organic farming enterprises. Further, organic vegetable production is geographically concentrated in California, and the variation in organic price premia depends upon regional production factors, especially weather conditions. This study examines the relationship between organic vegetable price premia and California weather conditions near organic vegetable farms. Analysis is based on a unique data set of daily prices from the Boston Terminal Wholesale Market and California weather...

Will Fat Taxes Cause Americans to Become Fatter? Some Evidence from US Meats AgEcon
Clark, J. Stephen; Levedahl, J. William.
Price and income elasticities of fat from meats are estimated by decomposing composite demand for meat into the produ ct of total calories, the fraction of calories eat as fat, and a residual measure of quality. This demand-characteristic system provides estimates of the impact of prices and income on the fraction of calories eaten as fat as well as their affect on the total consumption of fat. Empirical estimates of the comp ensated own-price elasticities of meats suggest that a fat tax designed to raise revenues to finance nutritional education efforts may increase the total consumption of fat.
