With the development of the biotechnology, more and more GM foods enter the food chain of the mankind. What are the consumers’ attitudes toward those foods? And what are their requirements for safety management derived from the emerging of those foods? By conducting a survey in Wuhan with a sample of 621 correspondents, the study collects the correspondents’ attitudes on GM foods and expectations on safety managements for those foods, and analyses impacts of consumers’ general preferences, specific perceptions on GM foods, and the special labeling usage behavior both on the attitudes formation in GM labeling and on the labeling choices using MNL models. The paper further proposes some suggestions in GM foods safety management based on the modeling results. |

The recent food crises in Europe have raised public concerns about the quality and safety of food. The growing concern among the consumers towards food safety issues has increased the demand for quality attributes. Most quality properties of food products can be considered as credence characteristics, quality of which cannot be inferred before the purchase, and sometimes not even after the purchase. The aim of this study is to evaluate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the value of new information about and the information systems set for credence characteristics of beef. Economics of information is the theoretical framework. The quantitative approach focuses to measure the ex ante value of credence characteristics, and the method of contingent... |

Taiwan is located in the subtropical area of the Far East. With the benefit of suitable weather, average temperature just under 71 F in the north and nearly 76 F in the south, and with the yearly precipitation around 75 inches, rice has been the self sufficient staff crop in Taiwan. Even in the early eighteenth century, Taiwan exported rice to support the supply in Mainland China. Rice is a necessity for Taiwanese. A sufficient supply and stabilization of its price are relevant to the whole economy and society. Because of the development of industry and economic growth, a lot of cultivated land has been transferred from rice production to industrial or architectural utilization under the principle of comparative advantage since 1958. The benefit per... |

Very little is known about changes in the demand characteristics of food in New Zealand. As far as we can determine, there has never been a complete disaggregated food demand model estimated for New Zealand. The object of this paper is to update these estimates using more recent data to see whether there are grounds for believing that the structural changes that occurred primarily during the last two decades are having effects on the magnitude of food demand elasticities in New Zealand. To this end, a Rotterdam food demand system is estimated using time series data. The results indicate that over the last 20 years, household consumption has increased for fruit and vegetables, poultry, food eaten away from home, and sweet products, drinks and other foods.... |

Organic vegetable producers typically earn a premium over conventional producers to cover the added costs of organic production. The premium can vary greatly, making organic vegetable farming riskier than conventional farming and causing potential financial problems for new organic farming enterprises. Further, organic vegetable production is geographically concentrated in California, and the variation in organic price premia depends upon regional production factors, especially weather conditions. This study examines the relationship between organic vegetable price premia and California weather conditions near organic vegetable farms. Analysis is based on a unique data set of daily prices from the Boston Terminal Wholesale Market and California weather... |
