Further Development of Methodologies for Sustainability Assessment and Monitoring in Organic/Ecological Agriculture Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Stolze, Matthias; Pearce, Bruce.
In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in assessing the sustainability of agriculture in terms of its social, environmental and economic impact and a number of indicators and tools are used. Measurements take place at the farm or product level and indicators can be outcome related e.g. number of butterfly species present, or management related e.g. percentage of fields with margins growing wildflowers to attract butterflies. Given its underlying ethos, the organic/ecological agriculture sector should aim to be at the forefront of sustainability. The development of assessment approaches and recent discussions within the movement have identified continuous improvement towards best practice in sustainability to be one of the important...

The Contribution of Organic Livestock to Sustainable Rural Development in Sensitive Areas Organic Eprints
Escribano, AJ; Gaspar , P; Mesias, FJ; Escribano, M.
Organic production may contribute positively to rural development. However, there is a gap of knowledge with regard to the livestock sector that the present work is aimed at filling by means of a multidisciplinary and participatory approach. The results suggest that ‘fully organic’ holdings (organic farms that sell products as organic) have the highest potential to contribute to the rural development in the area under study. Nevertheless, its implementation requires higher levels of education and implies higher costs. Due to these difficulties, public subsidies should support such production systems. Moreover, systems with low productivity but high environmental services should be also supported, such as those extensive (either conventional or organic).

Nährstoffkreisläufe schließen – reale oder virtuelle Leitidee? Organic Eprints
Sundrum, Albert; Sommer, Hendrik.

Ecological agriculture- a way towards sustainable agricultural practice Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Bošnjaković, Branko.
Today, and especially in the years to come, agriculture, as well as all other human activities, will have to pay much more attention to their environmental impacts. In other words, it is expected that in the near future only technologies which care about environmental aspects will be promoted and accepted by policy makers, scientists, consumers, and society in general. This is not surprising since the environmental problems are among the most urgent ones our civilization will have to tackle and solve. This demand for more careful stewardship of environment is also acknowledged by philosophy of sustainable development - a widely recognized concept and necessity of future development. Although established at the very beginning of this century, ecological...

Valuing leftover streams through livestock; the impact of livestock system and productivity level Organic Eprints
van Hal, Ollie; de Boer, Imke J.M.; Schader, Christian; Müller, Adrian; Gerrits, Walter J.J.; de Vries, Sonja; Van Zanten, Hannah H.E..
While the role of livestock in sustainable food systems is heavily debated, recent studies show that livestock can contribute to global nutrition security by converting leftover streams – products humans cannot or do not want to eat - into animal-source food (ASF). Where these studies clearly underpin livestock’s role in global food security, the current study aims to identify which combination of livestock systems, differing in production level, can optimally convert leftover streams into protein. To this end, we developed an optimization model containing a variety of livestock systems (pigs, dairy cattle, beef cattle, laying hens and broilers), differing in production level (low, mid and high), to enable better utilization of the various (low quality)...

Field balances of trace elements at the farm level on crop and dairy farms in Finland in 2004 Organic Eprints
Mäkelä-Kurtto, Ritva; Laitonen, Annukka; Eurola, Merja; Vuorinen, Arja; Pasanen, Titta; Rankanen, Riitta; Suominen, Kimmo; Laakso, Pirkko; Tarvainen, Timo; Hatakka, Tarja; Salopelto, Juha.
This study was part of a three-year (2004-2007) project entitled "Assessment and reduction of heavy metal inputs into Finnish agro-ecosystems" that was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Finland. The main aim of this study was to estimate field balances of trace elements at the farm level on typical crop and dairy farms in Finland in 2004. Field balances estimated at the farm level showed that the balances of the harmful heavy metals, Cd and Hg, were often slightly positive leading in accumulation of these metals into the soil on the crop and dairy farms. Selenium indicated a highly positive balance resulting in enrichment of this element in the soil in both farming systems. Also, the Cu and Zn balances were positive on the dairy...

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Conventional, Agri-Environmental Scheme, and Organic Irish Suckler-Beef Units Organic Eprints
Casey, J. W.; Holden, N.M..
The problems of overproduction within the European Union countries and the environmental impact of agriculture have lead to the introduction of schemes that aim to reduce both. Beef (Bos taurus) production forms a large component of the Irish agricultural industry and accounts for more than one quarter of agricultural economic output. Recently, the European CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) has been re-evaluated to include supplementary measures that encompass the environmental role of agriculture rather than just the production role. A life cycle assessment (LCA) method was adopted to estimate emissions per kilogram of CO2 equivalent per kilogram of live weight (LW) leaving the farm gate per annum (kg CO2 kg−1 LW yr−1) and per hectare (kg CO2 ha−1 yr−1)....

Cultural and Biological Determinants in the Evaluation of Urban Green Spaces Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Bauer, Nicole; Hunziker, Marcel.
Dramatically increasing urbanization is observable worldwide and brings pressure on space within urban areas as the built environment intensifies. Considerable evidence suggests that contact with nature is important for city dwellers, although it is not known whether residents’ appreciation of the forms of urban green spaces is constant across different contexts. More specifically, it has not yet been shown whether our appreciation of nature is innate and inherently human, is cultural and something that we learn, or is a mixture of both. This article describes an exploratory study consisting of 17 interviews carried out in Zurich, Switzerland. Kelly’s repertory grid technique is used to identify preferred urban landscapes, which were contrasted with...

Modelling representative and coherent Danish farm types based on farm accountancy data for use in environmental assessments Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, R.; Halberg, N.; Kristensen, I.S.; Larsen, I..
There is a need for valid and representative data on the production, resourceuse and emissions from different farm types in Denmark for publicregulation and assessment. The data should be usable for both area-based environmental assessment(e.g. nitrate leaching per ha)and product oriented environmental assessment(e.g. greenhouse gas emissions per kg pork). The objective of this study was to establish a national agricultural model for estimating data on resource use, production and environmentally important emissions for aset of representative farmtypes. Every year a sample of farm accounts is established in order to report Danish agro-economical data to the ‘Farm Accountancy Data Network’ (FADN), and to produce ‘The annual Danish account statistics for...

A comparison of energy use in organic and conventional agriculture in Spain Organic Eprints
Alonso, Antonio M.; González, Rodrigo; Foraster, Laia; Guzmán, Gloria I.; García, Roberto.
The current situation of worldwide concern over the emission of greenhouse gases and its effect on the climate demands an evaluation, from the perspective of energy efficiency and more specifically of non-renewable energy sources, of tendencies for change in the management of agricultural systems that have arisen in recent years. This article uses energy balances to evaluate the contribution of organic agriculture to the increase in the energy efficiency of Spanish agriculture. The results show the higher nonrenewable energy efficiency (NREE) and the lower use of nonrenewable energy (NRE) in organic systems compared with conventional ones. Nevertheless, agricultural systems in general could still improve their energy efficiency.
