Expectations, Experiences, Trust in the Case of Short Circuit Food Supply Networks AgEcon
Martino, Gaetano; Fritz, Melanie.
Farmers Markets are receiving an increasing attention by both food chains actors and social scientists. Economic and sociological studies are contributing to the comprehension of these forms of exchange. Both consumers and producers are fostering their expectations about the renewal of a mode of exchange which sustained local production‐ consumptions linkages. The main economic function of these organizational structures seems to be the reduction of the price paid by the consumers and the enhancements of allocation of farm products. The basic interpretation of these forms of exchange focuses on market structure, nonetheless the exchange relationships seems to emphasize several dimensions, including economic and cultural aspects. The objective of the paper...

2008 Michigan Swine Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 11 Michigan swine farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of fat hogs, feeder pigs and cull breeding hogs sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2008 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data were checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less than $1,000. While considerable variation in the...

INDICADOR DE SUSTENTABILIDADE DASHBOARD: ANÁLISE DA SUSTENTABILIDADE DA PRODUÇÃO FAMILIAR DE FRUTAS NO MUNICÍPIO DE ITAPURANGA - GO AgEcon
Campos, Claudia Aparecida; Ribeiro, Francis Lee; Souza, Cleonice Borges De.

Analysing Family Farm Succession: A Probit and a Competing Risk Approach AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Tietje, Hendrik; Weiss, Christoph R..
The present study examines family and farm characteristics affecting the choice and the timing of intergenerational farm transfers. Using survey data which are linked to accounting data for 272 farms in Northern Germany, we use a probit approach to examine whether specific farm and family characteristics are related to the likelihood of succession within a given period. We go beyond the existing literature by applying a competing risk approach to study the process and thus the timing, respectively of the two competing events – succession or exit from farming. We find that farm characteristics significantly influence succession considerations to the extent that they affect the value of the farm for the potential successor.

PERCEPTIONS OF LEAFY SPURGE BY PUBLIC LAND MANAGERS, LOCAL DECISION MAKERS, AND RANCH OPERATORS; SUMMARY AgEcon
Sell, Randall S.; Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Nudell, Daniel J..
A survey of 459 ranchers, 56 local decision makers, and 50 public land managers (565 total) was conducted to evaluate managerial, institutional, and social factors that may affect the rate and extent of implementation of various leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) controls. The study focused on a five-county region in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The questionnaire focused on weed management in general and specifically on the perceptions and attitudes of ranchers, land managers, and local decision makers who have been directly and indirectly affected by leafy spurge.

U.S. Farm Structure: Declining—But Persistent—Small Commercial Farms AgEcon
Hoppe, Robert A..
The continuing shift in production away from small commercial farms to larger farms is driven by financial pressures and aging operators. Some small commercial farms are profitable, while others stay in business by accepting low returns for their labor. Small commercial farms produced 22 percent of the Nation’s farm output in 2007.

FEASIBILITY OF A SHEEP COOPERATIVE FOR GRAZING LEAFY SPURGE AgEcon
Sell, Randall S.; Nudell, Daniel J.; Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Faller, Timothy.
This report presents an economic feasibility study of a 5,000 head, cooperatively owned, sheep operation for leafy spurge control. The objectives were 1) determine the return on investment of the cooperative, 2) determine the proposed structure of the cooperative, and 3) ascertain the amount of capital investment required by members in the cooperative. Three sheep flock management alternatives were initially considered for the cooperative. These were 1) winter lambing, 2) spring lambing, and 3) fall lambing. The fall lambing scenario was determined to be infeasible because of logistics associated with gathering and transportation of pregnant ewes and lack of grazing pressure on leafy spurge throughout the grazing season. The total capital investment...

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF TRACTOR PURCHASE DECISION IN SOUTH SULAWESI, INDONESIA: A COMPUTER SPREADSHEET TEMPLATE AgEcon
Maamun, Muhamad Yusuf.
Although most of the rice area in Indonesia is still prepared manually, since the early 1980s the government has promoted tractors for land preparation through subsidized loans. This has increased capital investment in agriculture; and for the farmers, the cost of owning and operating tractor has become an important part of farm costs. By the late 1980s, a rapid increase in the number of tractors intensified competition, reducing capacity utilization below an economically viable level. Thus, many tractor owners defaulted on their loans. This study investigates the financial profitability of tractor ownership in South Sulawesi, using a computer spreadsheet. The analysis uses input and output data (technical coefficient) collected by the Consequences of...

The Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Clark, Richard A.; Griffith, Garry R..
A critical component of the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process described in Paper 4 above is Performance Assessment - analysing and interpreting the results achieved, and not achieved, in relation to the focus and target outcomes. This is made easier if specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are established during Action Design and monitored during Action Implementation. The target outcome for the Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) Strategy is to design and implement effective and efficient MME mechanisms that will demonstrate improvements and innovations in individual beef businesses and supply chains and in the broader Australian beef industry.

Managing Complexity in Modern Farming AgEcon
Kingwell, Ross S..
Modern farming in Australia is no longer simple. Farms are large, multi-enterprise businesses underpinned by expensive capital investments, changing production technologies, volatile markets and pervasive regulation. The complexity of modern broadacre farming leads to the question: what is the nature of the relationship between farm business complexity and farm profitability? This study uses bioeconomic farm modelling and employs eight measures of complexity to examine the profitability and complexity of a wide range of broadacre farming systems in Australia. Rank order correlations between farm profitability and each measure of complexity show inconsistent relationships, although the most profitable farming systems are found to be reasonably complex on...

Farmers’ Perceptions and Willingness to Pay for Metarhizium-based Biopesticide to Control Cotton Bollworms in Benin (West Africa) AgEcon
Adetonah, Sounkoura; Coulibaly, Ousmane; Nouhoheflin, Theodore; Kooyman, C.; Kpindou, D..
The study assesses farmers’ perceptions and willingness to pay for a biopesticide developed from Metarhizium anisopliae a fungi. A sample of 400 conventional and organic cotton producers was randomly selected in cotton producing zones in Benin and interviewed for their perceptions on the efficacy of the biopesticide and the likely prices they are willing to pay for the product to control a major pest like Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm causing substantial crop losses. An econometric model (Logit) is used to identify factors highly likely to affect farmer’s willingness to purchase the product. The results show that Helicoverpa armigera or cotton bollworm is perceived by farmers as the most severe pest with losses reaching up to 100%. Farmers...

Determinants of non-farm labour participation rates among farmers in Australia AgEcon
Lim-Applegate, Hazel; Rodriguez, Gil; Olfert, M. Rose.
In recent decades, non‐farm employment has become prevalent and an important source of income for Australian farm families. However, models identifying the relative significance of the socioeconomic variables influencing non‐farm employment participation rates have never been estimated in Australia. In this paper, a bivariate probit model of non‐farm employment participation rates was estimated, using information from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics (ABARE) 1994–1995 surveys. It was found that the participation decision of the farm operator and spouse is likely to be jointly determined, that non‐farm employment participation increased at a declining rate with age among farmers and that university education enhances the...
