Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. Økologisk eng ble høstet (første slått) når timoteiaksene kunne kjennes i stengelen (S1) og når hele timoteiaks var synlig (S2) og ensilert i rundballer i Bodø i 2004. De to surfôrtypene ble sammenlignet i et kontinuerlig produksjonsforsøk med 32 melkekyr. Før kalving ble dyrene delt inn i 2 grupper med en årlig kraftfôrtildeling tilsvarende henholdsvis 40% (H) og 10% (L) i fôrrasjonen (regnet på energibasis). Første slått ved utviklingstrinn 1 ga lavere avlinger enn ved utviklingstrinn 2 (217 vs. 466 kg TS/daa). Ved bruk av S1 kunne kraftfôrmengden reduseres med over 3 kg TS per dag uten å redusere melkeytelsen nevneverdig sammenlikna med S2 og høy kraftfôrmengde, og samtidig økte proteininnholdet. The aim of organic pig production is to ensure high animal welfare and natural products. Banning castration is thus a logical step forward, but the risk of boar taint in the meat is a major barrier for marketing meat from entire male pigs. Is it possible to use genetic tools and breeding strategies to prevent boar taint? What is the effect of feeding, management, housing and hygiene? Is it possible to process the meat to minimize the risk of boar taint? Die Proteinträger Rapskuchen, getoastete Sojabohne, Sojabohnenkuchen, Maiskleber, Weizenkleber und Kartoffelprotein wurden auf ihren Gehalt an praecaecal verdaulichen Aminosäuren beim Geflügel geprüft. Die Versuche folgten einem standardisierten methodischen Vorgehen. Zur Bestimmung der Verdaulichkeit wurden Proben des Darminhaltes aus einem definierten Abschnitt des terminalen Dünndarms unmittelbar nach Tötung der Tiere entnommen. The study focuses on the utilization of local clover-like legumes as a protein source for pigs. It is examined how high crude protein can be concentrated in red clover (Trifolium pratense) by separating the leaf mass of the stems. In this part of the study, the two breeds Titus and Milvus have been compared. The digestibility of the material was determined by an in-vitro method. Preliminary results show that the concentration of crude protein increased up to 27.5 % compared to the whole-plant content of 21.9 %.The concentration of digestible crude protein in the leaf rose averagely by 21 % compared to the whole plant. An alternative substrate in the biogas or bioethanol production may be the sugar containing juice obtained after fractionation of beets into a juice used for fermentation and into a pulp used for feeding. The objective of the present experiment was to evaluate the fresh pulp of top and root from sugar (Angus) and fodder (Colosse) beets as feed for pigs and ruminants. As part of the EU Core Organic II research project ICOPP (Improved contribution of local feed to support 100% organic feed supply to pigs and poultry), a feeding trial was conducted in which grass pea seeds were included in diets for weaned piglets. The grass pea is a hardy grain legume that produces protein-rich seeds, but due to its content of the neurotoxin ODAP, intensive feeding is risky. Since ODAP is water-soluble and susceptible to heat, hydrothermal treatment (=toasting) greatly reduces toxicity. Herbage from legumes or legume-rich swards potentially has lower concentrations of water soluble carbohydrates (= wsc) and a higher buffering capacity (= bc) than grass grown in pure stands. The analysis of three forage legumes (= Trifolium repens, Tri-folium pratense and Lotus corniculatus) in monoculture and mixtures (= 50/50) with the grass species Festuca rubra demonstrates, that the ratio of wsc concentration to bc is critical low, especially when the herbage is harvested at physiological young stages to obtain a higher forage quality.
