Introduction: With the objective of diversifying current fishing and at the request of professionals in Aquitaine, the Regional Commission of Maritime Fishing and Marine Breeding (CRPMEM) of Aquitaine has started a discussion about the possibilities of opening a shellfishery. In the context of this course of action, and because of the absence of information on the presence and size of the resource, the CRPMEM of Aquitaine asked IFREMER's Halieutic Resources Laboratory of Aquitaine (LRHA) for assistance in acquiring information on the subject. At the same time, a prospective analysis study of the exploitation of shellfish off the coast of Aquitaineregulation and business sectionwas performed by the CRPMEM of Aquitaine (Coiffec, 2006). At that same time,... |

This document, which is the fifth edition of a series started in 2000, provides a global overview of the data collected in 2007 as part of the Fisheries Observatory of Ifremer. It includes a brief account of the activity and financial situation of the French fleets operating in the North Sea, English Channel, Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in 2006 and updates the 2005 issue, which was published in 2006. The summary is intended for a wide audience. The document contains several fact sheets : • The first sheet provides a global description of the French national (excluding overseas) fishing fleet (North Sea - Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea), including vessel and crew characteristics. It also presents the evolution of the French fishing... |

In 1989 and 1990, the Brittany Region has conceded a subvention to the shellfish professional organisation, for a study on the sea star proliferation Asterias rubens ; this species is a predator of reared oysters in subtidal zone, specially in the Bay of Quiberon (South Brittany). The sea star species Luidia ciliaris has been identified as an A. rubens predator in laboratory. In presence of A. rubens and various molluscs species, the exclusive prey L. ciliaris is A. rubens . Even deprived of A. rubens they do not eat any bivalve. The first result led us to set up an introduction test of L. ciliaris as the main predator of A. rubens and their relative spatial stability. In prospect of mass introduction of L. ciliaris in the bay, reproduction experiments... |

In 1972, France underwent an oyster (Crassostrea angulata) crisis and urgently needed to diversify its aquaculture. Thus, Asari clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) was introduced at that time for aquaculture purpose, concomitantly with the introduction of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). All Asari clam adults and spat originated from the same area (Puget Sound, WA, USA). After a promising start and the implementation of a national Research & Development program, Asari clam culture rapidly faced a series of concomitant handicaps: firstly, in spite the fact that cultural practices were optimized and locking points addressed, leasing ground availability was limited during the 1980s’ due to certain reluctance from oyster farmers to share their leases and/or... |

Introduction and objectives of the study: Understanding the operating modes of the coastline systems requires the study of the hydrodynamics responsible for transporting the whole of the geobiological compartments of which they are composed. The idea of maintaining a close connexion between the physics, biology, geology and chemistry of the oceans is not new, and was for that matter the subject of a note in the first report of the International Council for the Study of the Oceans (ICSS) in 1902 (Sverdrup et al., 1954): ... it was seen from the beginning that the study of the physical conditions, of the chemical nature of the ocean waters, of the currents, etc., was of the greatest importance for the investigation of the problems connected with life, that... |

A dinoflagellate has produced green-water events along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts of France since 1982. It differs morphologically from each of the 12 taxa or so of green gymnodinoid dinoflagellates previously known. As some morphological details, as well as their variability, remain to be ascertained, this organism is illustrated and described here under the provisional designation of Gymnodinium "sp. 1982". The presence of chlorophyll b has been confirmed by HPLC analysis but it could not be ascertained whether true chloroplasts are present, or symbionts. The distribution is coastal and estuarine. The number and intensity of the outbreaks may be related to river runoff and to the amount of preceding rainfall. An encysted stage is described.... |

Introduction: Through the combined works of research, local communities and professionals, a new activity has been created, "vénériculture", i.e. clam farming. Thanks to the knowledge acquired in research as well as production in the shellfish field, clam production results followed shortly thereafter. Rightly so, only 10 years have elapsed since the beginning of the research and the actual production phase (500 t) involving about 300 professionals. Research conducted by IFREMER positively contributes to the creation of new trades as well as diversity within existing professions. Clams are marketed nationally as well as exported. French producers are truly competent, but the prospect of open borders and increasing competition requires maintaining a high... |

The contamination of maturated anchovies by sulfite reducing anaerobes S.R.A.) is investigated. Samples are fishes from Roussillon coast caught in June 1981, maturated at 20 degree C according to the carne a carne method which gives filets and final intestin remaining after nobbing, total viscera of anchovies from the Bay of Biscay fished in march 1982, presalted during 12 h and maintained at -18 degree C during 5 days, solar salt. The numerations are made in SPS agar, 0 and 3% salt added, sowed with heated or not grinds. The mature anchovy is lightly acid and has a weak a sub(W) value. It is an intermediate moisture product in which bacteria sporule. The contamination has a gut origin. The tested microorganisms are Clostridium perfringens). They cannot... |

The network IFREMER/REMORA quarterly follows each year 2 batches of Pacific cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas ("juveniles"= 1 year old; and "adults" = 2 years old) on various sites among the main French oyster areas. The network monitors 46 sites, including 7 new sites added in 2003 to the network. The network REMORA thus assess seasonal survival, growth and quality of cupped oyster oysters. It is a tool for trend estimations, ecosystem management and a reference frame for scientific studies. In spite of the heat wave of the summer, rearing performances in 2003 were close to the average inter annual 1994-2003 data. The rearing yield reached 1.8 for the adults. Summer mortalities remained limited, except for juveniles in some sites (Blainville, Morlaix, Ré,... |

A fisrt survey designed to estimate the impact of the fishery on the multispecific population of the slope has been carried out from June 26th to July 20th 1996 on board of the French R/V Thalassa. This survey took place West of Scotland, between 55 degrees and 57 degrees of latitude North, on an area from where data before exploitation were available and where fishing activity was intensive since the 90's. On this area, the analysis of the species composition by haul only showed that the fish assemblage was structured according to depth. Such a conclusion was not new. However, the positioning of the hauls on two smaller sectors characterized by different slopes and bottoms, and probably by a lesser fishing intensity on the one with rougher bottom did not... |

Estimation of changes in the relative abundance of fish species in catches off Arcachon, on the shelf and in the Bassin d'Arcachon, from 1727 to the present day, shows that some previously dominant species are becoming scarce. Some are actually not caught now in the south of the Bay of Biscay. Among these are the large bottom-living elasmobranchs with low reproduction rates, such as Echinorhinus brucus, Squatina squatina, Raja batis, Raja brachyura, Dasyatis pastinaca, Myliobatis aquila, Galeorhinus galeus, Mustelus asterias, Raja clavata, ,.. and some actinopterygians, such as Trigla lyra, while catches of Eutrigla gurnardus are much reduced. Bottom trawling is principally responsible for these reductions but all fishing methods used there have... |

The French government has launched three separate calls for tender in July 2011, March 2013, and December 2016 to install 3.5 GW of offshore wind. In addition to contributing to the fulfillment of environmental commitments, the deployment of offshore wind energy is expected to be a lever for economic development. To assess gross economic impacts, mainly in terms of job creation, we built a regional input-output model of the wind farm off Saint-Brieuc located in the region of Brittany, north-western France. Our model indicates that the project will have positive effects on Brittany’s economy. In particular, during the investment phase, the wind farm is expected to lead to €0.38 M/year/MW of added value and 6.03 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs/year/MW.... |
