Epidemiology of HIV/HCV coinfection in patients cared for at the Tropical Medicine Foundation of Amazonas BJID
Victoria,Marilú Barbieri; Victoria,Flamir da Silva; Torres,Kátia Luz; Kashima,Simone; Covas,Dimas Tadeu; Malheiro,Adriana.
The association of HIV infection and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection often occurs because both viruses share the same transmission routes, increasing the possibility of HIV/HCV coinfection. World prevalence greater than 30% of coinfected cases is estimated, and it can reach 90% depending on the transmission route. With the aim of determining the frequency and profile of HIV/HCV coinfected patients, a descriptive analysis was carried out with patients with HIV/AIDS whose serology was positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV), cared for at the Fundação de Medicina Tropical do Amazonas from 2000 to 2007. In the present study, of the 2,653 AIDS cases notified in SINAN, 1,582 patients underwent serology test for hepatitis C, and a frequency of 4.42% (n = 70) of...

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus co-infection in Brazil and associated factors: a review BJID
Kuehlkamp,Valdete Meurer; Schuelter-Trevisol,Fabiana.
The hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus share the same transmission routes, which makes co-infection an unfavorable condition for the natural history of both viral diseases. In this context, it should be highlighted that the knowledge of the extent of co-infection and associated risk factors is a vital tool for prevention and control over infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to review the literature, seeking to examine the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus co-infection reported in studies conducted in Brazil, and identify the main risk factors associated with co-infection. The electronic search was conducted in the Medline, Lilacs and SciELO databases. The following keywords were used: human...

Vieira,Vinicius da Costa; Sarmento,Viviane Almeida; Ribeiro,Patricia Miranda Leite; Martins Netto,Eduardo; Brites,Carlos; Lins-Kusterer,Liliane.
ABSTRACT Erythema multiforme (EM), Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) have been reported as possible adverse effects of some classes of first-line antiretroviral drugs (ART) for HIV treatment. Herein we report an unusual presentation of TEN lesions associated with ART in an HIV-infected patient. The patient presented disseminated cutaneous eruption and oral lesions from the lips to the oropharynx region, causing odynophagia and dysphagia. In the tongue, circular, atypical erythematous lesions appeared, increasing in diameter over seven days and coalescing since then to complete remission. TEN treatment included efavirenz interruption, use of methylprednisolone, prophylactic antibiotic, and daily laser therapy with low-intensity...

Low frequency of hypersensitivity reactions to abacavir in HIV infected patients in a referral center in Bahia, Brazil BJID
Barreto,Raphael Gusmão; Brites,Carlos.
Abstract Abacavir can cause a multi-systemic hypersensitivity reaction (HSR) in 5-8% of the patients, which is related to HLA-B*57-01 allele. In Brazil, the HLA-B*57-01 screening test became available only in March 2018, several years after abacavir was in use. In this retrospective study we reviewed medical charts of all patients receiving an abacavir-containing regimen to evaluate the frequency of HSR in patients followed at a referral center in Salvador, Brazil. A total of 192 patients who received abacavir were identified, most male (67.1%), black or racially mixed (77.8%), and having diagnosis of a previous AIDS defining conditions (83.7%). Only one patient developed HSR (incidence: 0.52%). The main reasons for abacavir-containing antiretroviral...

Torres,Thiago Silva; Cardoso,Sandra Wagner; Velasque,Luciane de Souza; Marins,Luana Monteiro Spindola; Oliveira,Marília Santini de; Veloso,Valdilea Gonçalves; Grinsztejn,Beatriz.
The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy during the 1990s was crucial to the decline in the rates of morbidity and death related to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and turned human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection into a chronic condition. Consequently, the HIV/AIDS population is becoming older. The aim of this study was to describe the immunological, clinical and comorbidity profile of an urban cohort of patients with HIV/AIDS followed up at Instituto de Pesquisa Clinica Evandro Chagas, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Retrospective data from 2307 patients during January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2008 were collected. For continuous variables, Cuzick's non-parametric test was used. For categorical...

Martins,Saulo; Livramento,Andréa do; Andrigueti,Michelle; Kretzer,Iara Fabricia; Machado,Marcos José; Spada,Celso; Treitinger,Arício.
Evidence-based strategies to improve the hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination coverage rates might help to reduce the burden caused by co-infection with HBV and human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV). In this study, the aim was to evaluate the vaccination coverage and immunity against HBV among HIV-infected individuals in South Brazil, and identify factors that are associated with compliance patterns and antibody reactivity. Three hundred HIV-infected men and women were included in this survey. The patients answered a standardized questionnaire, and vaccination cards were checked in order to assess hepatitis B vaccine status. A blood sample was collected for quantitative determination of antibody to hepatitis B virus surface antigen (anti-HBs). Participants...

Evaluation of AIDS-related disability in a general hospital in southern, Brazil BJID
Zonta,Marise Bueno; Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de; Carvalho,Mirian T Matsuno de; Werneck,Lineu César.
The increase in survival rates of patients affected by AIDS is associated with physical disabilities that can compromise their functional independence. We examined the degree and types of disabilities in hospitalized AIDS patients , as well the clinical and immunological parameters associated with disability. The lowered functional status was associated with increased time since AIDS had been diagnosed, with complaints of weakness, and with the involvement of more than one set of systems in the definition of AIDS. The inability to perform daily living activities was associated with higher viral loads (log) c/mL, lower CD4+/mL and CD4+/CD8+ ratios, and with involvement of the central nervous system, in the cause of hospitalization. Both the inability to...

Abacavir-induced liver toxicity BJID
Pezzani,Maria Diletta; Resnati,Chiara; Di Cristo,Valentina; Riva,Agostino; Gervasoni,Cristina.
Abstract Abacavir-induced liver toxicity is a rare event almost exclusively occurring in HLA B*5701-positive patients. Herein, we report one case of abnormal liver function tests occurring in a young HLA B*5701-negative woman on a stable nevirapine-based regimen with no history of liver problems or alcohol abuse after switching to abacavir from tenofovir. We also investigated the reasons for abacavir discontinuation in a cohort of patients treated with abacavir-lamivudine-nevirapine.
